About the Syllabus Maker
Write a course syllabus from your own details, objectives, assessments and institutional policies. Enter the term dates, meeting days and holidays to create a complete calendar, then add topics, readings and assignments for each week or meeting. For an online course, organize sections and lectures and use their durations to estimate weekly workload.
The editor checks assessment weights against exactly 100%, shows which assessments address each learning objective, and prompts you to review objective wording and unfinished policy text. The first PDF page and first two weeks form the preview. A Pro pass opens the full PDF, Word, Markdown, schedule CSV and due-date calendar, and saves syllabi in this browser for reuse.
How to use it
- Enter the title, course code, instructor, contact and office hours. Choose classroom meetings or an online course, the term dates, and A4 or Letter paper.
- For a meeting-based course, select its weekdays and enter holiday dates. Build the calendar editor, then write topics, readings and assignments per week or per meeting.
- Add objectives with a cognitive process, observable verb, task, conditions and criterion. Link each objective to the assessments that provide evidence of it.
- Set assessment weights to exactly 100%, add optional due dates, and enter the letter-grade thresholds your institution actually uses, including a lowest band at 0%.
- Replace the policy starting text with approved attendance, late-work, integrity, accessibility and AI-use wording. For an online course, add every lecture duration and your planned independent work hours.
- Build the syllabus and review its alignment and warnings. With a pass, export the complete document or calendar and save a syllabus here. Keep the editor-input JSON backup before clearing browser storage.
Examples
Three complete course weeks, meetings on Monday and Wednesday, one selected Wednesday holiday
Six planned weekdays become five meetings; the remaining course weeks and notes stay in order.
Three assessments weighted 33.33%, 33.33% and 33.34%
100% total. Three weights of 33.33% instead produce 99.99%, which must be corrected.
180 minutes of lectures over two course weeks, plus 2.5 hours of independent work each week
3 lecture hours total; 1.5 lecture hours plus 2.5 independent hours gives an estimated 4 hours per week.
Objectives and assessment alignment
The six revised Bloom processes help organize what learners do: remember, understand, apply, analyze, evaluate and create. The editor offers a small set of verb suggestions and checks for wording that does not name an observable performance. A verb alone does not determine the cognitive level; the task and context matter. The guidance follows the University of Arkansas teaching guide.
The alignment table lists the assessments you selected for each objective. An unlinked objective remains visible as a review item. This is a planning check, not a judgement that an assessment is valid or that students have achieved the objective.
Course weeks and due-date calendars
Course week 1 begins on the term start, and each following course week is another seven-day group. The final week can be shorter. Holidays remove meetings only when they occur on selected meeting days; they do not move an assessment’s due date.
The calendar export creates one all-day event for every assessment with a due date. It uses the iCalendar format, with escaped text and folded UTF-8 lines. Review dates after importing them into your calendar.
Limitations
- You supply course content, due dates, grading thresholds and institutional policies. The tool does not certify academic standards or institutional compliance.
- The workload figure averages lecture duration across the course weeks and adds your independent-work estimate. It does not measure each learner’s actual study time.
- Calendar events are all-day due dates. They do not invent a submission hour or timezone.
- Saved syllabi stay in this browser and can be lost when storage is cleared or blocked. Download the editor-input backup to move your data between devices.
- Document fonts must be available for the PDF. If the engine cannot reproduce all characters, the export is refused with an explanation; Word and Markdown retain the text.

Frequently asked questions
What do I get without a pass?
Without a pass, Syllabus Maker shows the first PDF page and the first two course weeks. Until you unlock it, the result can’t be downloaded or copied. A Pro, Premium or Ultimate pass, a one-time payment unless you choose automatic renewal, unlocks the full result. The pricing page lists the passes and their prices.
Does this write my course content with AI?
The editor uses the content you enter. It does not send the course to an AI service or create an AI draft.
Can I reuse the syllabus next term?
Yes. Open a syllabus saved in this browser or import its editor-input JSON backup. Review the new term dates, holidays, notes and assessment dates before building it again.
Are the policy paragraphs ready to publish?
They are editing prompts. Replace them with the wording your institution approves for your course and review accessibility, academic integrity and assessment requirements.
Why is an objective marked unassessed?
No assessment currently selects that objective. Add an appropriate assessment link or review whether the objective belongs in the course.
