About the PowerPoint to Word (PPTX Slides to Editable DOCX)

Choose a PowerPoint presentation (.pptx, .ppsx or .potx) and get an editable Word document (.docx): every slide becomes a section with its title as a real Word heading, its text boxes and bullets as paragraphs and lists with their levels, its tables as Word tables, its pictures embedded (cropped as on the slide) and its charts as pictures, with the speaker notes underneath. Choose Outline only for just the titles and the bulleted text, as PowerPoint’s outline shows them, or add a picture of each slide for handouts.

The presentation is read on your device by the same reader as our Office Document Viewer — the slides’ own content, without the logo and footer the slide master repeats on every slide — and the Word file is written in your browser. Nothing is uploaded. Without a pass the free preview shows the first slides as Word pages under a watermark, with a summary of the whole document; with a pass, or after unlocking this result, you get the .docx.

How to use it

  1. Choose a .pptx file or drop it on the box. On a phone, save the attachment from WhatsApp or your e-mail app first, then pick it from Files or Downloads.
  2. Pick Everything on the slides or Outline only, which slides to include, the page size, and whether you want the speaker notes, the pictures and a picture of each slide.
  3. Press Convert to Word. The free preview shows the first slides as Word pages; with a pass, or after unlocking this result, download the .docx and open it in Word, Google Docs, Pages or LibreOffice.

Common uses

  • Turning slides into a report, a script, meeting minutes or a handout that people can edit.
  • Reusing the text of a deck in a proposal or a document without retyping it.
  • Giving speaker notes to a colleague, a translator or an editor in a Word file.
  • Getting the outline of a long presentation to review or translate.

Reading order

Word documents run from top to bottom, slides do not, so the converter picks an order: the slide’s placeholders first (title, subtitle, then the content placeholders), then every other text box, table and picture by position — row by row from the top, left to right within a row. Where text boxes overlap, the page warns about that slide, because the order on paper may then differ from what you read on the slide. Footers, dates and slide numbers placed on slides are left out, and so are the decorations of the slide master and layouts.

What carries over

  • Text: bold, italic, underline, strikethrough, superscript, subscript and web links; colours that read on white paper (white text on a dark slide becomes black). Font sizes follow the Word document, not the slide.
  • Lists: bullets keep their symbol and indent level; numbered lists stay numbered lists that Word keeps counting.
  • Tables: merged cells, light cell shading, and the first row as a header row that repeats on a new page.
  • Pictures: PNG, JPEG, GIF and BMP as they are; SVG and WebP pictures and cropped pictures redrawn as PNG or JPEG. Charts are redrawn from the values saved in the file and kept as pictures.
  • SmartArt keeps its text as a list; video keeps its poster picture.

The document follows Office Open XML (ECMA-376), so Word, Google Docs, Apple Pages and LibreOffice open it.

Limitations

  • Slide layouts are not rebuilt: text boxes become paragraphs in reading order, not boxes at their positions; use PowerPoint to PDF to keep the look of the slides.
  • Animations, audio and video are not converted; SmartArt keeps only its text; charts become pictures, not editable Word charts.
  • Pictures in EMF or WMF format (common in decks made with older Office versions) can’t be read in a browser; a line in the document marks where each one was.
  • Legacy PowerPoint 97–2003 (.ppt) files and password-protected presentations are not opened: save them as an unprotected .pptx first.

Frequently asked questions

What do I get without a pass?

Without a pass, PowerPoint to Word (PPTX Slides to Editable DOCX) shows the first slides of the document (up to 2) as Word pages under a MySmartCoPilot watermark, with a summary of the whole document. Until you unlock it, the result can’t be downloaded. A Pro, Premium or Ultimate pass, a one-time payment that never renews, unlocks the full result. The pricing page lists the passes and their prices.

Is my presentation uploaded?

No. The file is read and the Word document is written in your browser, on your device. Nothing is sent anywhere.

Will the Word document be editable?

Yes: the slide titles are Word headings, the bullets are Word lists and the tables are Word tables, so you can edit, restyle and reorder everything. Charts and pictures are pictures.

Are the speaker notes included?

Yes, under each slide’s content with a “Speaker notes” label, unless you untick Speaker notes under each slide.

Why is some text in a different order than on the slide?

A slide has no reading order of its own, so placeholders come first and then the other boxes from the top down. When boxes overlap, the page says so for that slide; move them apart in PowerPoint, or reorder the paragraphs in Word.

Can I convert an old .ppt file?

Not directly. Open it in PowerPoint, LibreOffice Impress or Google Slides, save it as PowerPoint Presentation (.pptx), then convert that file here.
