Markdown, HTML & Text to Word (DOCX)
Markdown, a web page or plain text in — an editable Word document with real styles out.

Preview
The preview uses the page width, margins, fonts and numbering you chose; Word decides where each page ends. Fonts that are not installed on the computer that opens the file are replaced by similar ones.
The pages of your Word document appear here as you write: type or paste text, open a file, or press Example.
About the Markdown, HTML & Text to Word (DOCX)
Paste or open Markdown, HTML or plain text and download it as a Word document you can keep editing. Headings become Word’s own Title and Heading 1–6 styles — so the navigation pane, outline view and table of contents work — lists become real Word lists that restart and nest where yours do, and tables, code blocks, quotes, links, pictures and footnotes come across as their Word equivalents.
Choose the page size, orientation and margins, the font, text size and line spacing, and optionally number the headings (1, 1.1, 1.1.1 or I., A., 1.), add a table of contents and page numbers. A live preview shows the result as you type. Everything happens in your browser: your text and pictures are not uploaded.
How to use it
- Type or paste your text, or press Open a file (or drop one on the box) for a
.md,.htmlor.txtfile. The format is detected; pick Markdown, HTML or Plain text yourself if it guesses wrong. - To keep the formatting of a web page or Google Docs, copy it there and paste it into the empty box — it is pasted as HTML (press Use plain text instead to undo that).
- If your Markdown refers to pictures by file name (
), press Add pictures and choose those files. Pictures written asdata:addresses are included automatically; tick Download pictures from web addresses forhttps://ones. - Choose the page, font and heading settings, check the Preview, then press Download .docx and open the file in Word, LibreOffice Writer, Google Docs or Pages.
Examples
# Release notes ## Changes | Version | Date | | --- | :---: | | 2.0 | 2026-09-30 | ```js const ok = true; ```
A .docx whose title uses the Title style, “Changes” as Heading 1, a bordered table with a repeating header row and a centred date column, and the code in a shaded Code paragraph with its colours.
## Introduction ### Scope ## Method
With “1, 1.1, 1.1.1” chosen: 1 Introduction, 1.1 Scope, 2 Method — numbered by Word itself, so new headings you add in Word are numbered too.
This paragraph was cop- ied from a PDF and is broken into short lines.
With “Join the lines of each paragraph”: one paragraph, “copied” joined again.
Common uses
- Handing in or sharing something written in Markdown (notes, README, documentation) as a Word file.
- Turning an answer from an AI chat, written in Markdown, into a formatted document.
- Saving an article or web page as an editable Word document, with its headings, lists and links.
- Converting plain-text drafts and e-mails into a cleanly formatted .docx.
What is converted
- Markdown (CommonMark 0.31.2, read with markdown-it): headings, emphasis, lists (numbered lists keep their start number), block quotes, code, links, pictures, horizontal rules, plus the GitHub extensions — tables with column alignment, task lists (☐ / ☒), strikethrough and full web addresses as links — and footnotes (
text[^1]…[^1]: note) as real Word footnotes. A YAML front matter block is left out; itstitle:andauthor:fill in the document properties.[TOC]on a line of its own places the table of contents;\pagebreak,\newpageor<!-- pagebreak -->start a new page. - HTML: headings, paragraphs, bold/italic/underline/strikethrough (also as written by Google Docs and Word with inline styles), lists, tables (with merged cells), quotes, code, links, pictures, line breaks and CSS page breaks (
page-break-before: always). Scripts, styles, forms and embedded frames are ignored. - Plain text: blank lines separate paragraphs; nothing else is interpreted, so
*and#stay as typed. A form-feed character starts a new page.
Links to headings ([see Method](#method)) become links to bookmarks inside the Word file; web, e-mail and phone links are kept, anything else (such as javascript:) is dropped. Arabic, Urdu and Hebrew paragraphs are written right to left.
Styles you can change in Word
Everything uses named styles, so one change in Word restyles the whole document: Title, Heading 1–6, Normal (your font, size and line spacing), Code and Inline Code (the code font on a light grey background), Quote, caption and the table-of-contents styles. With heading numbers on, the numbering is attached to the heading styles, as Word’s own multilevel lists do.
With Use the first heading as the document title, a document that starts with its only top-level heading (# Handbook followed by ## sections; a logo or badges above it are fine) gets that line in the Title style. Heading levels are then tidied for Word: the highest level used becomes Heading 1 (so ## sections become Heading 1, ### Heading 2 …), and a heading is never more than one level below the one before it — the usual structure of a Word document, and the one screen readers expect.
Limitations
- The table of contents lists the headings straight away; Word adds the page numbers when it opens the file (it asks to update the fields — choose Yes). In other apps, use their “update table of contents” command.
- Pictures from other websites are only included when Download pictures from web addresses is ticked and that website allows it; otherwise save them and use Add pictures. Pictures that cannot be included appear as “[Image: description]”.
- Maths ($…$), Mermaid diagrams, embedded videos and HTML forms are not converted into Word objects; their text stays as written.
- Colours, fonts and sizes set in HTML are not copied (only bold, italic, underline, strikethrough, superscript, subscript and highlight), so the document follows the styles you choose here.
- Texts of up to 2,000,000 characters (about 600 pages) are converted.

Frequently asked questions
Is my text uploaded anywhere?
No. The text is read, converted and written to a .docx file in your browser, and the pictures you add stay on your device. Only if you tick Download pictures from web addresses are those pictures fetched from their websites, without your text.
Will the headings work in Word’s navigation pane?
Yes. Headings use Word’s built-in Heading 1–6 styles with outline levels, so they appear in the navigation pane, in outline view and in any table of contents you add in Word.
How do I keep the formatting of a web page or Google Docs?
Select and copy the content there, then paste it into the empty text box here: the tool takes the formatted (HTML) version from the clipboard and shows a note saying so. Headings, bold, italic, lists, tables and links are kept.
Can I convert Markdown from ChatGPT or another AI chat?
Yes. Copy the answer and paste it here: whether the chat gives you Markdown or formatted text, headings, lists, tables, bold text and code blocks become Word formatting. Markdown copied from a code editor such as VS Code is read as Markdown too.
Why are some of my pictures missing?
A Markdown picture such as points to a file on your computer, which a web page cannot open by itself: press Add pictures and choose that file (it is matched by its file name). The notes above the preview say which pictures were not included and why.
Does it open in Google Docs, LibreOffice and Pages?
Yes, the file is standard Office Open XML (.docx). Fonts that are not installed on the computer that opens it are replaced by similar ones; the table of contents needs an “update” in apps other than Word to show page numbers.
