About the Germany Heating Subsidy Calculator (KfW BEG 458)
Work out the KfW grant for a new heat pump or other renewable heating in an existing home in Germany (BEG Heizungsförderung für Privatpersonen – Wohngebäude, product 458), by the rules of the KfW's Merkblatt (KfW/)): a base grant of 30%, a speed bonus for replacing an old oil, coal, gas floor or night storage heating (or a gas or biomass boiler of 20 years or more), and an income bonus of up to 40% for owner-occupiers with a low taxable income, at most 70% (80% for low incomes) of eligible costs of up to €28.000 for a house.
Enter the application date, the costs, the homes in the building, your old heating and your household income. The calculator shows the grant, each part of it, the ceiling and what you pay yourself, with the working. Nothing you type leaves your browser.
Without a pass, the free preview shows your heating grant in full, with the first rows of the table of the grant and the first step of the working; a Pro pass unlocks every figure and the summary to copy, download or print.
How to use it
- Enter the date you will apply (the grant is applied for before the work starts) and the eligible costs of the new heating with VAT, as the energy expert or installer confirms them.
- For a building with more than one home, enter the homes in it and how many the new heating serves.
- Tick whether you own and live in the home as your main home, choose the old heating you replace and enter your taxable household income (leave it empty if you do not claim the income bonus).
- Read the grant, its parts and the working. With a Pro pass, or after unlocking this result, use Copy summary, Download CSV or Print; without one the page shows a free preview.
Examples
Grant €12.880: 46% of the €28.000 counted.
Grant €22.400: 80% of the costs counted, the 80% cap.
The KfW’s own example of the cap: 30% + 16% + 40% = 86%, paid at 80%.
Grant €22.400: the child supplement lifts every income limit by €10.000, so the income bonus is 40% and the cap 80%.
Grant €8.400: the base grant of 30% only.
Grant €27.066,67: the ceiling of €58.000 is shared by the three homes; the owner's home gets 80%, the other two 30%.
The grant and its bonuses
- Base grant: 30% of the eligible costs, for every owner of an existing residential building and for owners' associations.
- Speed bonus (Klimageschwindigkeitsbonus): for owner-occupiers who replace a working oil, coal, gas floor or night storage heating of any age, or a working gas or biomass boiler put into service at least 20 years before the application: 16% for applications until 31 January 2027, 12% from 1 February 2027, 8% from 1 August 2027 and 4% from 1 February 2028; applications from 1 August 2028 get none.
- Income bonus (Einkommensbonus): for owner-occupiers, by the taxable household income (the average of the second and third years before the application, from the tax assessments): up to €30.000 40%, up to €40.000 30%, up to €50.000 10%. With a child under 18 in the home and child benefit for it, each limit is €10.000 higher, once.
- Cap: at most 70% of a home's eligible costs; 80% for owner-occupiers up to €30.000 of income (€40.000 with the child supplement) (KfW Merkblatt/PDF-Dokumente/6000005131_M_458.pdf)).
Eligible costs and the ceiling
The costs of the heating, its installation and the work it needs (the heating distribution must be optimised too) count up to €28.000 for the first home of the building, €15.000 each for the second to the sixth and €8.000 each from the seventh, shared equally by all homes. For applications from 1 February 2027 the first home's amount falls by €750 every half year. A project needs at least €300 of costs.
How to apply
An energy efficiency expert or the installer confirms the planned heating (the Bestätigung zum Antrag); you sign a supply contract that only takes effect with the KfW's approval, then apply in the Meine KfW portal before the work starts. Starting the work, or a contract without that condition, before the application rules the grant out. The grant is paid after the work, on the confirmation of what was done (KfW/); expert list).
Limitations
- The building must be an existing residential building whose planning application (Bauantrag or Bauanzeige) was made at least 5 years before the application.
- The heating must meet the technical minimum requirements of the guideline (the expert confirms them); a hydrogen-ready heating counts only its extra costs.
- The KfW plans a value-added bonus (Wertschöpfungsbonus) from the first quarter of 2027, under which the base grant for heat pumps made outside the EU may be lower; its rules are not published yet and are not worked out here.
- The grant cannot be combined with the income tax reductions for energy renovation or for craftsmen’s work (§ 35c and § 35a EStG) for the same measure.
- Owners’ associations and buildings with several owners apply in two steps (a joint application and one for each owner-occupier’s bonuses); the shares here assume equal homes.
- The grant is subject to the funds available; the KfW decides. The KfW’s top-up loan for the rest of the costs is not included.
- An estimate from the published rules, not a KfW decision and not financial advice.

Frequently asked questions
What do I get without a pass?
Without a pass, Germany Heating Subsidy Calculator (KfW BEG 458) shows your heating grant in full, with the first rows of the table of the grant and the first step of the working; every other figure is hidden. Until you unlock it, the result can’t be downloaded, copied or printed. A Pro, Premium or Ultimate pass, a one-time payment that never renews, unlocks the full result. The pricing page lists the passes and their prices.
How much KfW grant do I get for a heat pump?
30% of the eligible costs, plus 16% if you replace an old oil or gas heating that qualifies, plus up to 40% with a low income, at most 70% or 80%. For a house with €30.000 of costs and no income bonus that is €12.880.
What is the maximum KfW heating grant for a house?
80% of €28.000, €22.400, for an owner-occupier with a taxable income up to €30.000 who replaces a qualifying heating (the 80% cap). Otherwise at most 70%, €19.600.
Which income counts for the income bonus?
The taxable income (zu versteuerndes Einkommen) of the owners living in the home and their partners: the average of the second and third years before the application, shown by the tax assessments.
Is there still an efficiency bonus?
No. The current Merkblatt has a base grant, the speed bonus and the income bonus only.
Is my data sent anywhere?
No. Everything is worked out in your browser; nothing you type is uploaded or stored on a server.
