About the Chat with PDF (Ask Questions About Your Documents)

Open up to ten files — PDFs, Word, PowerPoint, Excel or CSV, EPUB books, web pages, e-mails, text files or photos of pages — and ask questions about them in plain words: “What is the notice period?”, “Which risks does the report name?”, “What did the minutes decide about the budget?”. Every answer quotes your files and cites the page (or slide, sheet or chapter) each sentence comes from; select a citation and the passage opens beside the answer with the words of your question marked.

When your files don’t contain the answer, the page says Not found in your files instead of guessing. Each answer is checked sentence by sentence against the passages it cites before you see it, and a sentence with a figure, date or amount that isn’t in those passages is taken out. Your files are read and searched on your own device; the answers are written by your browser’s built-in AI, by a language model on your device, or — with a pass, after you agree — by MySmartCoPilot’s cloud AI, which then gets your question and a few passages only. Without a pass you get the free preview: the first half of each answer.

How to use it

  1. Choose your files (or drop them on the box). Each one shows its pages and words, and any hidden text that was left out. For scans or photos, tick Read scanned pages and photos and pick the language of the text.
  2. Type a question under Ask about your files, or pick one of the suggested questions, and press Ask (or Enter).
  3. The first time, the AI panel asks where the answer may be written: your browser’s built-in AI, an on-device model after a one-time download (its size is shown first), or MySmartCoPilot cloud with a pass. Without any of them you still get the best-matching sentences of your files.
  4. Select a citation such as [1] to read the passage it comes from; Summarise this part asks for the main points of the part of the file that passage is in.
  5. For questions worded differently from the file, or asked in another language, tick Better matching. With a pass, Download Q&A (Markdown, text or Word) and Copy take the whole conversation; the free preview shows the first half of each answer.

Examples

A rental agreement
Input
rent-agreement.pdf (11 pages) · “What happens if I leave before the lock-in period ends?”
Result
Two sentences from clauses 7.2 and 7.3, cited as [1] page 4 and [2] page 5: the notice required and what is kept from the deposit, worded as the agreement words it.
Three papers for a literature review
Input
Three PDF papers · “Which sample sizes did the studies use?”
Result
One sentence per paper with its figure and a citation to its methods page, so each number can be checked in a click.
A question the files don’t answer
Input
A product manual · “Who is the company’s CEO?”
Result
“Not found in your files.” — no answer is made up.

Common uses

  • Finding a clause, a deadline or a figure in a long contract, policy or tender without reading it all.
  • Revising from lecture notes, slides and a textbook chapter at once.
  • Checking what a report actually says before quoting it, with the page to cite.
  • Asking a set of meeting minutes what was decided and who took which action.

How the answers stay with your files

  • Only your passages. A question first goes to a search of your files (keywords on the device, plus meaning with Better matching). Only the passages it finds are given to the AI, as data, with the instruction to answer from them alone and to cite each one.
  • Checked before you see them. Every sentence of an answer must be largely made of words of the passages it cites; a sentence that isn’t, or that adds a number, date or amount the passages don’t have, is removed. If nothing is left, the page says Not found in your files.
  • Hidden text is never read. Text that a reader of the file can’t see — invisible, tiny, white-on-white, off-page or hidden by the file — is left out when the file is read and listed on the file’s card, so instructions hidden in a document can’t steer the answers.
  • No outside knowledge. The AI gets no web search, no links and no memory of other conversations.

Where the answers are written

  • Your browser’s built-in AI, where it has one (some desktop browsers): nothing is downloaded by this site.
  • An on-device language model (about 1 GB on computers, about 350 MB on phones), downloaded once from MySmartCoPilot after you agree. It needs a recent browser with WebGPU.
  • MySmartCoPilot cloud, with a pass, after a dialog that shows exactly what is sent: your question and the passages it needs, with e-mail addresses, phone numbers and similar details masked. Your files themselves are never uploaded.
  • Without AI: the sentences of your files that match the question best, with their pages.

Answers are written in the language of your files, because each sentence is checked word for word against them.

What the page tells you about each file

Each file card shows its format, pages (or slides, sheets, chapters) and words, notes such as “pages 3 and 4 are scans without text” or “running headers and page numbers were left out”, and what hidden text was found, with a short sample. Files that can’t be read — a damaged file, an unsupported format, a DRM-protected e-book — say why.

Advice questions

The page answers what your files say. A question that asks for personal medical, legal or financial advice gets no AI answer: it shows where your files mention the topic and suggests asking a qualified professional. Answers are general information, not professional advice.

Limitations

  • Up to 10 files and about 500 pages (or slides, sheets, chapters) at once; 50 MB per file and 150 MB in all.
  • Tables and charts are read as text, and text inside pictures only with OCR, which can misread names and numbers. OCR reads up to 40 pages per run and is slow on phones.
  • The search finds passages that share words with the question; questions in other words or another language work better with Better matching.
  • Small on-device models can miss nuance in long or technical passages; the citations are there to check every answer.
  • Files and the conversation stay only in this tab: reloading or closing the page clears them.
  • Password-protected PDFs open with their password; DRM-protected e-books can’t be read.

Privacy

Your files are read and searched on your device and are never uploaded. Answers are written by your browser’s built-in AI where it has one, or by a language model downloaded once from MySmartCoPilot after you agree (the size is shown first). Only if you choose MySmartCoPilot cloud (with a pass) are your question and the few passages it needs sent to MySmartCoPilot’s cloud AI; a dialog shows exactly what is sent first.

Frequently asked questions

What do I get without a pass?

Without a pass, Chat with PDF (Ask Questions About Your Documents) shows the first half of each answer’s words (up to 100) with its page citations, every answer made from your whole files. Until you unlock it, the result can’t be downloaded or copied. A Pro, Premium or Ultimate pass, a one-time payment that never renews, unlocks the full result. The pricing page lists the passes and their prices.

Are my files uploaded?

No. They are read, indexed and searched in your browser. Only if you choose MySmartCoPilot cloud, with a pass, are your question and the few passages it needs sent — after a dialog shows exactly that text.

Can it make things up?

Every answer is checked against the passages it cites before it is shown, and sentences that aren’t supported are removed; when nothing in your files supports an answer it says Not found in your files. Small models can still misread a passage, so check the cited page before you rely on an answer.

Which files work best?

Text-based PDFs, Word and PowerPoint files, e-books and web pages. Scans and photos work with OCR. A spreadsheet is read row by row, so questions about single values work better than questions that need calculations.

Can I ask in another language than my files?

Yes, with Better matching turned on: for a question in another language than your files it uses a model for many languages (about 135 MB, downloaded once after you agree) that finds passages by meaning, and the page suggests it when you ask that way. The answer is written in the language of your files, so it can be checked against them.

Why does it ask to download a model?

Where your browser has no built-in AI, a language model can run on your device instead, so nothing of your files leaves it. The AI panel shows the exact size first and asks before anything is downloaded; the model is kept for next time.
