About the AI Performance Review & Self-Appraisal Writer

Write a self-appraisal, a manager review, peer feedback or upward feedback from two things you already have: a rating for each competency and your own evidence. Choose the competencies — communication, quality of work, ownership, teamwork, leadership, customer focus, problem solving, adaptability, planning and delivery, job knowledge, or your company’s own — rate each one on a 5, 4 or 3-point scale (with your company’s own rating names if you like), and jot down what happened, one note a line.

Each comment is written as you type, in the situation–behaviour–impact style: an opening that matches the rating, your notes turned into examples in the review’s voice (“Led the migration → finished two weeks early” becomes “For example, Sam led the migration (result: finished two weeks early).”), and a next step. Nothing is invented: where a note is missing the comment says [add an example], and where no result is given, [add the impact]. Choose the voice (“I” for a self-appraisal, “you”, or the person’s name and their pronoun), the tone and the length, and press Another wording for a different phrasing.

The checks read every comment for vague praise (“great job”, “team player”), personality labels (“abrasive”, “stubborn”), gender-coded and age-related words — with the Inclusive Language Checker’s rules and a suggested rewrite — wording that contradicts the rating, a top or bottom rating with no example, and your HR system’s character limit. Add SMART goals for the next period and an overall summary worked out from the ratings. Draft with AI rewrites one comment into polished prose on your own device, from the same rating and notes.

Without a pass, the free preview shows the first competency comment in full and an outline of the rest; a Pro pass gives the whole review, the rewrites and Copy, Word and PDF.

        How to use it

        1. Pick the type of review and enter the name (and, if you like, the role, period and reviewer). For a review of someone else, choose whether the comments speak about them (their name, then they, she or he) or to them (“you”).
        2. Choose the rating scale, the tone and the length of each comment. Under Your company’s rating names, rename the ratings and set your HR system’s character limit.
        3. In each competency card, choose the rating and write your evidence notes, one a line, with → before the result. Add what to develop next if you like. Add, remove, rename or reorder competencies, or add your own.
        4. Read each comment and its checks. Press Another wording, Edit the text, or Draft with AI for a rewrite made on your device.
        5. Add goals for the next period (or press Suggest goals) until every SMART letter is green, and check the overall summary.
        6. With a Pro pass, copy each comment into your HR system, copy the whole review, or download it as Word or PDF; the free preview shows the first comment in full and an outline of the rest.

        Examples

Manager review, rating “Exceeds expectations”, two notes
        Input
Communication · Exceeds expectations · “Wrote the weekly metrics email for the leadership team → open rate up from 40% to 85%” · “Ran the quarterly data review for 60 people”
        Result
Alex communicates clearly and keeps people informed without being asked. For example, they wrote the weekly metrics email for the leadership team (result: open rate up from 40% to 85%). They also ran the quarterly data review for 60 people. A good next step would be for them to coach newer colleagues on writing clear updates.
        Self-appraisal, no notes yet
        Input
Leadership · Meets expectations · to develop: “lead a project from start to finish”
        Result
I show leadership in my own area and support colleagues when needed. [add an example] Next period, I plan to lead a project from start to finish.
        A check on wording
        Input
“Can be abrasive in meetings, but a real team player.”
        Result
Check: “abrasive” labels the person and can carry a gender stereotype — describe the behaviour and its effect. Check: “team player” is praise without a fact — say what was done and what changed.

        Common uses

        • Writing your own self-appraisal before the review meeting, with every claim backed by an example.
        • Writing reviews for a team at the same standard: the same scale, tone and structure for everyone.
        • Peer and upward feedback that is specific and kind, without vague praise or personality labels.
        • Turning a year of notes into review comments and SMART goals in the format your HR system asks for.

        How each comment is written

The comment follows the situation–behaviour–impact pattern described by the Center for Creative Leadership: the situation, the observable behaviour, and its result. The opening sentence matches the rating (a different one for each of the ten built-in competencies and each rating level); each evidence note becomes one example, with a note starting “During…”, “In…” or “When…” kept as its situation and the part after → kept as its result; then a next step — your own “to develop” note, or a suggestion for that competency (for a strong rating, a stretch). A detailed comment ends with one more line. The words of your notes are kept as you wrote them.

        SMART goals

A goal is checked against the letters of SMART as the University of California’s guide for managers and employees defines them: specific (what will be accomplished, starting with an action), measurable (the data that shows it), achievable (doable with the skills and resources — your call and your manager’s, so it is not checked), relevant (here: linked to the competency it develops) and time-bound (the time frame). Each goal becomes one sentence: “By the end of June, Sam will run a monthly SQL clinic for the sales team, measured by six sessions held.”

        What the checks look for

        • Vague praise — “great job”, “team player”, “hard worker” in a sentence with no fact: say what was done and what changed.
        • Personality labels — “stubborn”, “arrogant”, “difficult to work with”: describe what happened, when, and its effect.
        • Gender-coded words — “bossy”, “abrasive”, “emotional” judge the person and can carry stereotypes; the APA’s guidance on gender asks writers to avoid them.
        • Age-related words — “digital native”, “young and energetic”, “set in their ways” are about age, not performance (APA on age). Age is a protected characteristic at work in many countries: in the US the ADEA protects people aged 40 and over, and in Great Britain it is one of the characteristics the Equality Act 2010 protects.
        • The Inclusive Language Checker’s gender and age rules (“chairman”, “manpower”, “the elderly”), with a replacement you can apply.
        • Contradictions — notes that read more critical than “Exceeds expectations”, or more positive than “Needs improvement”.
        • No example behind a top or bottom rating, absolutes (“always”, “never”), placeholders left in, and your character limit.

Draft with AI, on your device

Press Draft with AI on a comment and the AI rewrites that comment — made from your rating and notes — into one polished paragraph in your tone and length, keeping your numbers and placeholders. It runs in your browser: your browser’s built-in AI where it has one, otherwise an AI model that gets ready on your device the first time (its files come from MySmartCoPilot and stay in your browser). The draft stays beside your comment until you press Use this; numbers that are not in your notes and placeholders it dropped are pointed out. AI can still get things wrong: read every draft before you use it.

        Limitations

        • The comments are written in English. The checks look for listed words and patterns: they cannot judge fairness, and a comment can pass them and still be unfair.
        • Notes are turned into sentences by simple rules: a note that does not start with a verb is quoted as an example (“One example: …”). Read every comment and edit it where it reads awkwardly.
        • Draft with AI needs your browser’s built-in AI or a browser with WebGPU for the on-device model (for example a recent Chrome or Edge on a computer).
        • Your notes are not kept in this browser: save them as a file before you close the page.

        Frequently asked questions

What do I get without a pass?

Without a pass, AI Performance Review & Self-Appraisal Writer shows the first competency comment in full (up to 100 words) and an outline of the rest, and the first words of each AI draft. Until you unlock it, the result can’t be downloaded or copied. A Pro, Premium or Ultimate pass, a one-time payment that never renews, unlocks the full result. The pricing page lists the passes and their prices.

        Does it make up achievements?

No. Every example in a comment is one of your notes, turned into a sentence in the review’s voice. The tool’s own words are the opening that matches the rating and the next step. Where you gave no example, the comment says [add an example]; where you gave no result, [add the impact].

Can I write in the first person for a self-appraisal?

Yes. A self-appraisal is written as “I”. For a review of someone else, the comments can speak about them (their name, then they, she or he, or their name every time) or to them as “you”.

Our company uses its own rating names. Can I use them?

Yes. Pick the 5, 4 or 3-point scale that matches yours and rename each rating under “Your company’s rating names”. The comments and the summary use your names.

How is the overall rating worked out?

As the average of the competency ratings, rounded to the nearest point of your scale. You can choose the overall rating yourself instead.

        Where do my notes go?

Nowhere: they stay in this page and are gone when you close it. Save my notes keeps them as a file on your device, and Open saved notes brings them back. Draft with AI runs on your device too.

What does the free preview show?

The first competency comment in full (up to 100 words), and for every other comment, the goals and the summary, an outline: how many sentences and words, how many examples from your notes and how much is left to fill in. A Pro pass shows the whole review, its checks and rewrites, and unlocks copying, Word and PDF.
