    About this list

GSTN’s HSN/SAC master (HSN_SAC.xlsx): 21,928 HSN codes for goods and 681 SAC codes for services. Descriptions are GSTN’s own text, typos included. Codes GSTN adds after this copy was made are not in it.

GST rates are not shown: the rate depends on the exact description in the rate notification, and notifications change. For goods see Notification No. 9/2025–Central Tax (Rate) and its amendments; for services, Notification No. 11/2017–Central Tax (Rate) as amended. Every notification is on CBIC’s tax information portal.

About the HSN & SAC Code Finder

A GST invoice has to show the HSN code of the goods or the SAC code of the service. HSN (Harmonised System of Nomenclature) codes come from the Customs Tariff: 2 digits for the chapter, 4 for the heading, 6 for the sub-heading and 8 for the tariff item. SAC (Services Accounting Code) codes start with 99, followed by a 2-digit heading and a 2-digit service code.

This finder searches GSTN’s official HSN/SAC master — about 21,900 HSN and 680 SAC codes — by words or by digits, and lets you browse chapter by chapter. Each result shows where the code sits (chapter › heading › sub-heading), so an entry that just says “Other” makes sense, and copies the code or the code with its description in one click. The list is downloaded once from this site and searched on your device. It shows codes, not GST rates — those are in the rate notifications linked below.

    How to use it

    1. Type what you sell — “green tea”, “laptop”, “courier services” — or the first digits of a code, such as 8471 or 9983. Choose Goods (HSN) or Services (SAC) to search only one list.
    2. Read the results: each shows the code, its level (heading, sub-heading, tariff item or service code), GSTN’s description and the headings above it.
    3. Click a code to copy it, or Copy with description to copy both. Codes under it opens the heading in the browser below.
    4. Or browse: open a chapter to see its headings, then a heading to see its codes. Download the current results as CSV for your item master.
    5. Check the GST rate for the code in the rate notification before you invoice.

    Examples

    Laptop
    Result
8471 30 — Portable automatic data processing machines, weighing not more than 10 kg …

The tariff does not use the word “laptop”; the finder also searches the tariff’s wording for a few everyday words like this one and says so.

    Green tea in bulk
    Result
0902 20 20 — Green tea in bulk (under 0902 Tea, whether or not flavoured)
    Code 9983
    Result
SAC heading: Other professional, technical and business services, with its 6-digit service codes such as 998311 (management consulting) and 998313 (IT consulting and support)
    Courier services
    Result
SAC 996812 — Courier services (under 9968 Postal and courier services)

    Common uses

    • Find the HSN or SAC code to print on a tax invoice, quotation or e-way bill.
    • Fill in the HSN summary of a GST return for the goods you sold.
    • Build or check the codes in an item master or billing software.
    • See every tariff item under a heading before choosing the most specific one.

How many digits go on an invoice?

Under Notification No. 78/2020–Central Tax, a business whose aggregate turnover in the previous financial year was up to ₹5 crore must show at least a 4-digit HSN code on B2B tax invoices (optional for B2C); above ₹5 crore, at least 6 digits on every tax invoice. The same applies to SAC codes for services. Customs documents for imports and exports (bills of entry, shipping bills) use the full 8-digit tariff item. Check the notification and any later changes before relying on this summary.

How HSN and SAC codes are built

    • HSN, goods: chapter (2 digits, 01–98 in this list) › heading (4) › sub-heading (6, the international Harmonised System level) › tariff item (8, India’s national level under the First Schedule to the Customs Tariff Act, 1975). 8471 is the heading for automatic data processing machines; 8471 30 the sub-heading for portable ones; 8471 30 10 the tariff item for personal computers.
    • SAC, services: 99 › heading (4 digits, such as 9954 construction services) › service code (6 digits, such as 995411 construction of residential buildings), following the scheme of classification of services annexed to Notification No. 11/2017–Central Tax (Rate).

A lower-level code is always inside the higher-level one: every code that starts with 0902 is a kind of tea.

    Searching tips

    • The descriptions use tariff wording, so try the general word (“footwear”, “seats”, “medicaments”) if the everyday one finds nothing. For a few common words (laptop, mobile phone, fridge, AC, car, medicine, shoes, chair, IT services, website development, manpower, salon) the finder adds the tariff’s wording automatically and tells you.
    • Every word you type must appear (as the start of a word) in the code’s description or in the headings above it, and at least one in the code’s own description.
    • Many 8-digit entries just say “Other”: they cover what the other items under the same sub-heading do not. Read the path shown with each result.
    • Digits search by code: 84 lists the whole chapter, 8471 the heading and everything under it.

    About the data

The list is GSTN’s HSN/SAC master (HSN_SAC.xlsx from tutorial.gst.gov.in), converted for this page without changing any description. A few codes in the spreadsheet had lost a leading zero or contained a space, and seven codes were listed twice; those were repaired, with the second description kept. One code (5208 31 10) has no description in the master and is shown with its headings. GSTN updates the master from time to time.

    Limitations

    • This is a search of GSTN’s list, not a classification ruling: the correct code depends on what the goods are made of and used for, and on the tariff’s chapter notes. If in doubt, ask a tax professional or use an advance ruling.
    • GST rates are not shown. Rates depend on the exact description in the rate notifications (for goods, Notification No. 9/2025–Central Tax (Rate) as amended; for services, No. 11/2017–Central Tax (Rate) as amended).
    • The descriptions are GSTN’s own text, including its abbreviations and typos.
    • Results show the first 100 matches; add words or digits to narrow a broad search.

    Privacy

The code list is downloaded from this site once; your searches are matched on your device and never sent anywhere.

    Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between HSN and SAC codes?

HSN codes classify goods (chapters 01–98 of the Customs Tariff); SAC codes classify services and all start with 99. A business that sells both uses HSN codes for its goods and SAC codes for its services.

    Do I need 4, 6 or 8 digits?

For GST invoices: at least 4 digits if your aggregate turnover in the previous year was up to ₹5 crore (for B2B invoices), at least 6 digits above ₹5 crore (Notification No. 78/2020–Central Tax). Bills of entry and shipping bills for imports and exports use the full 8-digit tariff item.

Why does a result only say “Other”?

In the tariff, “Other” covers everything under a heading that the items before it do not. The path shown under each result tells you which heading or sub-heading it belongs to.

Where do I find the GST rate for an HSN code?

In the rate notifications: for goods, Notification No. 9/2025–Central Tax (Rate), with its amendments; for services, Notification No. 11/2017–Central Tax (Rate) as amended. CBIC publishes all of them on its tax information portal. Then work out the tax with the GST calculator.

    Is this the official list?

It is a copy of GSTN’s published HSN/SAC master; the date of the file is shown on the page. Classification itself follows the Customs Tariff and its notes, so treat a match as a starting point, not a ruling.
