About the Work Experience Calculator (Multiple Jobs, Years & Months)

Add up your work experience across several jobs for an application form, an experience statement or your résumé. Enter each employer with the joining and relieving dates — or tick Till date for the job you are in — and the calculator gives the total in years, months and days, counts overlapping periods once and lists the gaps between jobs.

Many government and company forms ask for experience up to a cut-off date, such as the closing date of the application: set it, and nothing after it counts. Full-time, part-time and internship periods are kept apart — part-time counted at the share you set — and relevant experience adds up only the jobs you mark. The table is ready to paste into a form, a spreadsheet or your résumé, with the dates written the way the form asks.

Without a pass, the free preview shows your total experience in full, with the first rows of each table, the timeline as a marked picture and the first step of the working; the totals by kind of work, the relevant experience, the rest of the jobs and gaps, the copies and the CSV need a Pro pass.

    How to use it

    1. Set the cut-off date: the date the form counts experience up to (the closing date of the application, or today).
    2. Add each job: the employer, your designation, the kind of work, the joining date and the relieving date — or tick Till date for a job you are still in.
    3. Tick Relevant for the jobs that count as relevant experience for the post you are applying for.
    4. Under How to count, choose the share part-time work counts at (50% of full-time to start with), whether internships are added to the total, and whether the relieving day itself counts.
    5. Read the total, the gaps and the table. Copy the table for a form, copy the lines for a résumé or download the CSV — with a Pro pass, or after unlocking this result.

    Examples

    One job, both days counted
    Input
    Joined 1 June 2021 · relieved 31 May 2026
    Result

    Result
10 years and 7 months (10.58 years): the 1 month and 17 days when Beta and Gamma overlap count once, and the 2 months between Acme and Beta are listed as a gap

    Common uses

    • Filling in the experience section of a government or public-sector job application that asks for experience up to its closing date.
    • Writing the total experience on a résumé or a job portal profile, with relevant experience shown apart.
    • Checking an experience statement or a background-verification form before submitting it.
    • Explaining career gaps with their exact dates and lengths.

    How experience is counted

    • Each job runs from the joining date to the relieving date with both days counted, so 1 June 2021 to 31 May 2026 is exactly 5 years. If a form counts the relieving day out, untick that option.
    • Months are calendar months: a month is complete when the same day number comes round again, and in a shorter month its last day counts (31 January to 28 February is 29 days, 1 February to 28 February a whole month). Leap years are counted day by day.
    • Adding periods: every 30 days make a month and every 12 months a year, so 2 years 3 months 10 days and 1 year 10 months 25 days make 4 years 2 months 5 days. The calendar days are shown as well.
    • In years: years + months ÷ 12, with days as part of a month — 10 years and 7 months is 10.58 years.

    Overlaps, part-time work and internships

When two jobs cover the same days — a notice period that ran into a new job, or two jobs at once — those days count once. A day covered by two kinds of work counts as the higher one: full-time, then part-time, then internship, so weekend part-time work during a full-time job adds nothing.

Part-time days count at the share you set (50% of full-time to start with; 0% leaves them out). Internships are listed with their own total and added to the total only when you ask, because many forms count only regular employment. Follow what the recruitment notice or the employer says.

Experience up to a cut-off date

Recruitment notices often fix the date experience is counted up to: the closing date of the application, or a date the notice names. Enter it as the cut-off date: a job you are still in counts up to it, a job that ends later is cut at it, and a job that starts after it is listed but not counted. The time after your last job up to the cut-off date is shown as a gap, which forms that ask about career breaks need.

    Limitations

    • Only the dates you enter count: a break inside a job (unpaid leave, a sabbatical) is not known unless you split that job into two entries around it.
    • Forms differ in how they count part-time work, internships and the relieving day; the calculator follows the choices under How to count, so set them as the form asks.
    • Adding periods carries every 30 days into a month; a form that adds days or months another way may differ by a day or two, so the calendar days are shown too.

    Frequently asked questions

What do I get without a pass?

Without a pass, Work Experience Calculator (Multiple Jobs, Years & Months) shows your total experience in full, with the first rows of each table (up to 3), a marked timeline and the first step of the working; every other figure is hidden. Until you unlock it, the result can’t be downloaded or copied. A Pro, Premium or Ultimate pass, a one-time payment that never renews, unlocks the full result. The pricing page lists the passes and their prices.

How do I calculate total work experience from several jobs?

Work out each job from its joining date to its relieving date, count any days two jobs share only once, and add the periods as years, months and days, carrying every 30 days into a month and every 12 months into a year. The calculator does all of this and lists the overlaps and the gaps it found.

Do the joining day and the relieving day both count?

Here they do, so a job from 1 June 2021 to 31 May 2026 is exactly 5 years. If a form counts the relieving day out, untick “Count both the joining and the relieving day” under How to count: the same job is then 4 years, 11 months and 30 days.

    How are overlapping jobs counted?

Once. If your new job started before your notice period at the old one ended, the shared days are added only one time, and the calculator says which jobs overlapped and for how long. Where a part-time job overlaps a full-time one, the shared days count as full-time.

    What is relevant experience?

The experience a post asks for in a particular kind of work. Tick Relevant on the jobs that qualify, and the calculator adds up only those, with overlaps counted once and part-time work at the share you set.

How do I write experience in years with decimals?

Divide the months by 12 and add them to the years: 10 years and 7 months is 10.58 years, 4 years and 6 months is 4.5 years. The calculator shows this figure under the total.
