About the Website Word Counter

Website Word Counter reads pasted HTML as data on your device. It builds a static no-JavaScript text view, counts word-like segments and numbers, estimates reading time at your chosen pace, and calculates the selected text-to-HTML byte ratio. Select main-content-only to inspect explicit main/role=main regions, or top-level article regions when no main exists. Nested selected regions are counted once.

A source view can differ from the rendered page: this tool never loads styles, images, frames or scripts. Explicit hiding and inline visibility declarations are source evidence; external CSS and runtime changes remain unknown. The free preview shows finding labels and a limited overview. A Pro pass opens the complete calculated metrics, crawler text, filtering/sorting, copy and downloads.

How to use it

  1. Paste the complete HTML source; optionally enter its original page address as local context. No page is fetched.
  2. Choose the complete body or main-content-only view, and set the assumed reading pace in words per minute.
  3. Analyze source and inspect the findings, including the low-text/script-heavy warning when present.
  4. With a pass, copy the complete selected crawler text or download all metrics. Open Keyword Density Checker for word frequency.

Examples

Synthetic source example
Input
The prefilled example has a navigation bar, main article, hidden paragraph, script and noscript fallback.
Result
17 body source words; main-content-only yields 15. At the illustrative 200 words/minute pace, the body estimate is 5.10 seconds.

Definitions and primary references

Words use locale-sensitive Intl.Segmenter word-like segments, including numbers; fallback results can differ for languages without spaces. Reading seconds = words ÷ assumed words/minute × 60. Text-to-HTML ratio = selected text UTF-8 bytes ÷ complete pasted source UTF-8 bytes × 100.

JavaScript SEO and rendering, Googlebot source handling and word segmentation. The local input profile is independent of a crawler or hosting limit.

How the crawler text view is selected

Scripts, styles, templates, frames and objects are omitted. Paragraph and break boundaries separate text; ordinary inline elements preserve word joins. The no-JavaScript view includes noscript fallback text. Main-content selection follows explicit markup, and an empty main selection is never silently replaced by the body.

Limitations

  • Source-only mode does not measure live-page visibility. External CSS, cascade overrides, pseudo-content, responsive changes, shadow DOM, images and runtime JavaScript need a rendered-page review.
  • The editable 200-word/minute default is an illustration, not a population average or a measured reading speed. Word segmentation can vary with language and browser data.
  • The low-text/script-heavy flag is a local heuristic: fewer than 30 body source words and at least four scripts or inline scripts over 256 bytes and three times body text bytes. It is a review prompt, not proof of missing content.
  • Paste up to 2 MiB of HTML. Exports with a pass hold all the selected text and figures; on screen, long text and tables are shortened or shown in pages so the page stays responsive.
  • It does not fetch a page from its address: paste the page's HTML. No ranking score or recommended text-to-HTML percentage is inferred.

Privacy

On this device; its files download once

Pasted HTML and the optional page address stay on this device. The parser never executes source scripts or loads source-linked resources. Reset, editing, cancel and leaving invalidate the current analysis.

Frequently asked questions

What do I get without a pass?

Without a pass, Website Word Counter shows finding labels and limited overview; full computed values, text, table controls and exports open with a pass. Until you unlock it, the result can’t be downloaded or copied. A Pro, Premium or Ultimate pass, a one-time payment that never renews, unlocks the full result. The pricing page lists the passes and their prices.

Does the page address fetch the page?

No. Paste its HTML yourself. The optional address is only local context and is never requested.

Why can the live page contain more or fewer words?

JavaScript can add text and external CSS can change visibility. This tool reports the static source view and flags script-heavy, nearly empty bodies for separate rendered review.

Is there an ideal text-to-HTML ratio?

No ranking threshold is claimed. The ratio is a clearly defined source-byte measurement for comparison, not a search score.
