About the Writing Process Recorder (Show How You Wrote It)

Write in this editor and every change is recorded on your device with its time: what you typed, what you pasted (marked as pasted, with its length), what you cut, deleted and undid, and the sessions you wrote in. A replay slider plays the document being written, and the process report shows the sessions, the active writing time, how much of the final text was typed and how much was pasted or imported, every paste with how much of it is still in the text, and how often the text was revised.

When you are done, unlock the result and export a replay file: every edit, chained with SHA-256 so that a later change to the record shows, unless whoever made it worked out every hash again. Whoever receives it — a teacher, an editor, a client — opens it here to check the chain and watch the text being written. There is no AI score and no verdict: the record shows what happened in the editor, and a replay is evidence, not proof.

How to use it

  1. Give the document a title and write in the editor. The status line says when the recording is stored in this browser; New starts another document and the list switches between them.
  2. To bring in a draft, press Insert a file’s text (Word, ODT, RTF, Markdown or text): it is recorded as imported, not typed. Text you paste is recorded as pasted, unless you cut it inside the editor and paste it back: that counts as moved.
  3. Open Replay and report to play the recording, drag the slider to any edit, and read the sessions, the pastes and where the final text came from.
  4. Without a pass the page shows a free preview: your writing and its replay in full, every count of the report and the first rows of its tables. Unlock the result to download the replay file and the PDF summary. To check someone else’s record, open their replay file under Open replay files; several files at once give a comparison table.

Examples

A short recording
Input
A paragraph typed in two sessions, with a quotation pasted in and the first sentence rewritten the next day.
Result
48 words · 2 sessions · 1 min of active writing
Typed here 74.3% · pasted or imported 25.7% (1 paste of 63 characters, all of it still in the text)
50 characters deleted · 237 edits

The numbers come from the Try the sample recording button under Open replay files.

Checking a replay file
Input
essay.replay.json
Result
✓ A MySmartCoPilot writing replay file (format 1).
✓ 4,812 edits, all well formed, replay to the final text.
✓ The SHA-256 chain is unbroken (10 blocks).
✓ The final text matches its SHA-256 fingerprint.

Common uses

  • Students who want to show a teacher how an essay or a thesis chapter was written, as an honest answer to an AI-detector score.
  • Freelance writers and translators who want to show a client the work that went into a text.
  • Teachers who ask for replay files with assignments and compare up to 100 of them in one table.
  • Writers who want to watch their own drafting habits: when they write, how much they revise, how long their sessions are.

What is recorded

Every change to the text is one edit with its time to the millisecond: where it happened, how many characters were removed and what was inserted, and how the browser says it was made (Input Events): typed (also autocorrect and input methods), pasted, dropped in, cut, undo or redo, or imported from a file or another tool. Copying is noted too, so a passage you cut or copy inside the editor and paste back counts as moved, with its original origin.

  • Sessions end at a pause of 30 minutes or more, and at every new visit to the page.
  • Active writing time adds up the gaps between edits that are less than 2 minutes apart; longer pauses do not count.
  • Where the final text came from follows every character from the edit that put it there to the end: typed, pasted, imported, or brought back by undo when the record does not show where it came from.
  • Revisions: the deleted characters, and the edits that changed earlier text rather than adding at the end.

The recording stays in this browser (IndexedDB) and never leaves your device. Clearing this site’s data deletes it, so download the replay file (a pass unlocks it) of anything you need to keep; your own text downloads without one.

The replay file and its hash chain

The replay file is JSON: the title, when the recording started, the edits in blocks of 500 and a short summary. Its chain starts from a SHA-256 hash of the format, the title and the start time; each block’s hash covers the previous hash and the block’s edits; the last hash is the file’s head. The SHA-256 fingerprint of the final text is stored as well.

The viewer recomputes all of it. A changed edit breaks the chain from its block on and the page says which block; a changed title or start time breaks it at the start; a removed block breaks the head; a changed final text fails its fingerprint. The file is checked in your browser and is not uploaded.

The chain has no secret key. Someone who changes a file and works out every hash again makes a file that checks out, so the chain catches damage and careless edits, not a deliberate forgery.

What a recording can and cannot show

A replay shows how a text came about in this editor: typed at a natural pace over several sessions, with false starts and revisions — or pasted in one piece. That is useful evidence for a teacher or a client, but it is not proof. Someone can type out a text written elsewhere or by someone else, and anyone with the format can make a new file with a chain of its own. The chain shows only that the file was not changed in a way that left its hashes behind. MySmartCoPilot does not build AI detectors, and this tool gives no score and no verdict.

Limitations

  • A record covers only what was written in this editor. Text drafted elsewhere and typed in again looks like typing.
  • The chain has no secret key and no outside timestamp: anyone who knows the format can change a file and work out its hashes again, and nothing in it shows when or by whom it was made.
  • Recording relies on the browser’s input events. Text changed by a browser extension that edits the page directly may be recorded as typed.
  • Do not write in the same document in two tabs at once: the tab that saves last wins.
  • The recording lives in this browser only. Private windows may not keep it after they close: before you leave, download the replay file (a pass unlocks it) or at least your own text.

Frequently asked questions

What do I get without a pass?

Without a pass, Writing Process Recorder (Show How You Wrote It) shows your writing and its replay, every count of the process report and the first rows of its tables (up to 10); replay files you open show in full. Until you unlock it, the result can’t be downloaded. A Pro or Premium pass, a one-time payment that never renews, unlocks the full result. The pricing page lists the passes and their prices.

Is my writing uploaded anywhere?

No. The text and its recording are kept in this browser’s own storage and never leave your device. Replay files you open are checked in your browser too.

Does this tool say whether a text was written by AI?

No. It records how a text was written in this editor and reports it, with no score and no verdict. A replay can support what a writer says about their work; it cannot prove it.

What happens when I paste text?

The paste is recorded as pasted, with its length and the moment it happened, and its characters stay marked as pasted in the replay and in the report — also after you edit around them. Text you cut or copy inside the editor and paste back counts as moved, not pasted.

Can a replay file be faked?

Yes, with some effort. Editing a file by hand breaks its chain, and the viewer shows where. But the chain has no secret key, so a program can change the edits and work out every hash again, and anyone can type a text out slowly. Treat a replay as evidence, not proof.

How do teachers check several students’ files?

Open up to 100 replay files at once under Open replay files: a table lists each file with its words, sessions, active time, typed and pasted shares and its pastes, and whether its record checks out — or which check failed (a broken chain, a changed final text or summary). Select a file name to check and replay that file.

Does it work offline?

Yes, once the page has loaded: writing, recording, the replay and the report work without a connection. Making a PDF downloads its font the first time.
