About the Spain Minimum Wage (SMI) Checker

Spain's minimum wage (salario mínimo interprofesional, SMI) is 40,70 € a day or 1.221 € a month in 14 payments for the legal working day, and never less than 17.094 € a year for full time. This checker turns it into every unit — a day, a month in 14 or in 12 payments, a year — for the hours you work, and tells you whether your pay meets it.

It also covers the two amounts the decree sets apart: fixed-term jobs of 120 days or less at one company, paid by the working day with Sundays, holidays and the extra payments included, and household employees paid by the hour. Nothing you type leaves your browser.

    How to use it

    1. Choose your kind of job: a standard job, a fixed-term job of 120 days or less at one company, or household work paid by the hour.
    2. Enter your hours a week and the full-time week of your job: 40 hours by law, fewer if your collective agreement says so.
    3. Enter your gross pay and what it is for: a month in 14 payments, a month in 12 payments, a year or a day. Leave it empty to see the minimum only.
    4. Read whether your pay meets the minimum, and the minimum for your hours in every unit.
    5. Copy the summary to keep a record or to raise it with your employer.

The amounts of the minimum wage

    • A day: 40,70 €, with Sundays and public holidays paid on top.
    • A month in 14 payments: 1.221 €, twelve months and two extra payments.
    • A month in 12 payments: 1.424,50 €, the yearly amount over twelve, with the extra payments prorated.
    • A year: 17.094 € for full time, the amount the decree compares pay with.
    • Fixed-term jobs of 120 days or less at one company: 57,82 € a legal working day, Sundays, holidays and the two extra payments included.
    • Household employees paid by the hour: 9,55 € for each hour actually worked, every part of the pay included.

These are the amounts of the Real Decreto that sets the minimum wage, arts. 1, 3 and 4.

Part-time work and a shorter week

The minimum is for the legal working day of each activity; with fewer hours it is paid pro rata. The legal full-time week is at most 40 hours of effective work, averaged over the year (Estatuto de los Trabajadores, art. 34.1). When your collective agreement sets a shorter full-time week, your share is worked out on that week.

    What counts towards the minimum

Only pay in money counts, and pay in kind can never lower the minimum in money. Salary supplements such as seniority are added on top of it (art. 2), and the comparison is made over the year: never less than 17.094 € for full time (art. 3). Pay that already beats the yearly amount keeps its structure and its amount.

    Limitations

    • The general minimum only: your collective agreement (convenio colectivo) usually sets higher minimum salaries for your job, and those apply.
    • Enter your ordinary pay for the hours you work: overtime and night-work supplements are not checked apart.
    • Household employees who live in, and other special employment relationships, have rules of their own beyond the hourly amount.
    • The amounts of the decree in force; Spain sets the minimum wage again every year.
    • A guide to the decree, not legal advice: the labour inspectorate or a court decides a dispute.
