About the Qatar Overtime, Rest-Day & Annual Leave Calculator

Work out overtime pay and annual leave under Qatar’s Labour Law No. 14 of 2004, the way its articles set them: the basic hourly wage, overtime at the basic wage plus at least 25%, overtime between 9 pm and 3 am plus at least 50% (not for shift workers), a weekly rest day worked at the basic wage plus at least 150% with another day off, and the paid holidays of Article 78. A QAR 6,000 basic wage on 8-hour days gives QAR 25.00 an hour and QAR 31.25 for each overtime hour.

The Annual leave tab counts the leave you have earned — three weeks a year while your service is under five years, four weeks from five years, a part year in proportion — and its pay on the basic wage. Where the official Arabic text of the law and the English translation on Qatar’s legal portal differ, the calculator follows the Arabic text and shows the other reading. Nothing you type leaves your browser. Without a pass the page gives a free preview of your own result: the total or the leave balance in full, with the rates and the other amounts hidden until you unlock it with a Pro pass.

How to use it

  1. Enter your basic wage a month, without housing, transport or other allowances.
  2. On the Overtime tab, enter the ordinary hours of your working day (8, or 6 in Ramadan), the overtime hours, the overtime hours between 9 pm and 3 am, and any Fridays or paid holidays you worked. Tick Shift worker if you work in shifts.
  3. On the Annual leave tab, enter your start date, the day to count up to, the days carried over from earlier leave years and the days taken this leave year.
  4. Open Rates and readings if your contract pays more than the law’s minimum increases, or to change how a monthly wage becomes a day’s wage.
  5. Read the total, the rates and the working. Without a pass the result is a free preview; with a Pro pass, or after unlocking this result, copy the summary or download it as CSV.

Examples

QAR 6,000 a month on 8-hour days: 10 overtime hours, 4 more between 9 pm and 3 am, and one Friday
Result
An hour QAR 25.00; 10 h × QAR 31.25 = QAR 312.50; 4 h × QAR 37.50 = QAR 150.00; the Friday QAR 500.00 and a day off in lieu; QAR 962.50 in all.
The same wage in Ramadan: 6-hour days and 10 overtime hours
Result
QAR 6,000 ÷ 30 ÷ 6 = QAR 33.3333 an hour; 10 h × QAR 41.6667 = QAR 416.67.

In Ramadan ordinary hours are at most 6 a day (Art. 73), so the same monthly basic wage pays a higher hourly wage, and hours beyond 6 a day are overtime.

One paid holiday worked (Eid, Independence Day or an employer-set day)
Result
Under Article 74 (the official Arabic text): a day’s basic wage × 125% = QAR 250.00 on top of the holiday’s pay. Under Article 75 (the English translation): QAR 500.00 and another day off.
A shift worker with the same hours and no Friday
Result
Night hours get no 50%: 4 h × QAR 31.25 = QAR 125.00; QAR 437.50 in all.
2 years and 6 months of service, 3 days carried over and 2 taken
Result
21 × 181 ÷ 365 = 10.41 days earned this leave year; balance 11.41 days, worth QAR 2,282.74 at QAR 200.00 a day.
Five years and three months of service, nothing carried over
Result
The sixth leave year earns four weeks: 28 × 90 ÷ 365 = 6.9 days so far.

Ordinary hours and overtime

Ordinary hours are at most 48 a week, 8 a day, and in Ramadan 36 a week, 6 a day. Breaks for prayer, rest and meals of one to three hours are not counted, and no one works more than five hours in a row; travel between home and work is not working time (Article 73, Al Meezan).

Overtime is allowed as long as the actual hours of a day stay within 10, unless the work is needed to prevent a serious loss or a dangerous accident or to deal with one. Each overtime hour is paid at least the basic wage for an ordinary hour plus 25%. Overtime worked between 9 pm and 3 am is paid the basic wage plus at least 50%, except for shift workers (Article 74: the night rate sits among its overtime rules, so the calculator applies it to overtime hours in that window). The portal’s English translation gives the night window as 9 pm to 6 am; the official Arabic text says 3 am, and the calculator follows it.

Fridays and the paid holidays

Every worker has a paid weekly rest of at least 24 hours in a row, as a rule on Friday (shift workers excepted). A worker who has to work on the rest day gets another day of rest and is paid either what the rest day normally pays or the basic wage plus at least 150%; this calculator works out the second option. Except for shift workers, no one may be made to work on more than two Fridays in a row (Article 75 in the official Arabic text; the portal’s English translation reads it as two Fridays in a row).

Article 78 gives ten paid holidays a year: three working days for Eid al-Fitr, three for Eid al-Adha, one for Independence Day and three set by the employer. For work on them, the official Arabic text applies Article 74 — the overtime rate — while the English translation points to Article 75, the rest-day rule. The calculator uses Article 74 and lets you switch the reading to compare.

How the hourly wage is worked out

Overtime is a share of “the basic wage due for the ordinary working hours” (Article 74): the basic wage without housing, transport or other allowances (Article 1). The law does not say how a monthly wage becomes a day’s or an hour’s, so the calculator divides it by 30 (or by 365 ÷ 12) for a day and the day by your ordinary hours for an hour, and shows the working. The increases of Articles 74 and 75 are minimums: if your contract pays more, enter its rates under Rates and readings.

Annual leave

After a full year of continuous service a worker has annual leave on the basic wage (Article 72) of at least three weeks while the service is under five years and four weeks from five years, with leave for a part year in proportion to the service (Article 79). The calculator counts a week as seven days: 21 and 28 days a year.

The employer sets the dates and may split the leave into at most two parts with the worker’s consent, and may postpone at most half of it to the next year at the worker’s written request (Article 80). The right cannot be waived; cash replaces leave only when the contract ends before it is taken (Article 81). The leave pay is paid before the leave starts, with the wage earned up to then (Article 68, Al Meezan).

Official sources

Al Meezan is the State of Qatar’s legal portal. Where its English translation and the official Arabic text differ — the night window of Article 74, the limit on Fridays in a row in Article 75 and the article that Article 78 applies to holiday work — the calculator follows the Arabic text and says so.

Who the law covers

Labour Law No. 14 of 2004 covers private-sector employers and workers. Article 3 leaves out government ministries and public bodies, government petroleum and petrochemical companies, the armed forces, police and seafarers, casual work, domestic workers, members of the employer’s family who live with him, and most farm and grazing work. Article 76 takes senior staff with the employer’s authority over workers out of the hours, overtime and rest-day rules, and guards, cleaners and preparatory or finishing work out of the ordinary-hours limits.

Limitations

  • Follows Labour Law No. 14 of 2004 for the private sector; it does not cover the groups Article 3 leaves out, and senior staff are outside the overtime rules (Article 76).
  • The hours are entered as totals for a period: the calculator cannot check each day’s 10-hour limit or the five-hours-in-a-row rule, only the average when you give the days with overtime.
  • Overtime worked on a Friday or a holiday beyond a normal day’s hours is not worked out separately: enter it with the overtime hours if your employer pays it that way.
  • A collective agreement, the employer’s rules or the contract may pay more than the law’s minimums; enter those rates under Rates and readings.
  • Unpaid absence and how sick leave or other leave counts towards the leave year follow the employer’s records; enter the days to leave out.

Frequently asked questions

What do I get without a pass?

Without a pass, Qatar Overtime, Rest-Day & Annual Leave Calculator shows the overtime pay or the leave balance in full, with the rules, hours and days that apply; the rates and every other amount are hidden. Until you unlock it, the result can’t be downloaded or copied. A Pro, Premium or Ultimate pass, a one-time payment that never renews, unlocks the full result. The pricing page lists the passes and their prices.

How is overtime calculated in Qatar?

Take the basic wage for an ordinary hour — the monthly basic wage ÷ 30 ÷ the ordinary hours of a day — and add at least 25% for each overtime hour, or at least 50% for overtime between 9 pm and 3 am (not for shift workers). On QAR 6,000 and 8-hour days that is QAR 31.25 and QAR 37.50 an hour.

What is the pay for working on a Friday in Qatar?

Another day of rest, plus either the ordinary rest-day pay or the basic wage with an increase of at least 150% (Article 75): QAR 500.00 for a full day on a QAR 6,000 basic wage. No one but a shift worker may be made to work on more than two Fridays in a row.

How many hours of overtime are allowed in a day?

Enough to keep the actual hours of the day within 10: two hours on an 8-hour day, four in Ramadan. Longer days are allowed only to prevent a serious loss or a dangerous accident, or to deal with one (Article 74).

How many days of annual leave do I get in Qatar?

At least three weeks a year (21 days) while your service is under five years and four weeks (28 days) from five years, with a part year in proportion. Leave is taken once a full year of service is complete, on the basic wage (Articles 72 and 79).

Is the night rate from 9 pm to 3 am or to 6 am?

The official Arabic text of Article 74 says 9 pm to 3 am; the English translation on Qatar’s legal portal says 6 am. The calculator follows the Arabic text, which is the law; check with your employer or the Ministry of Labour which hours your employer pays at the night rate.

Are allowances part of overtime pay?

No. Overtime is a share of the basic wage for ordinary hours (Article 74), and the basic wage leaves out housing, transport and other allowances (Article 1). A contract may still pay overtime on more.

Do I need a pass?

To copy or download the full result, yes: a Pro pass unlocks every Pro tool. Without a pass you see a free preview of your own result: the total or the leave balance in full, with the rules, hours and days that apply, and the rates and other amounts hidden.

Is what I enter sent anywhere?

No. Everything is worked out in your browser; nothing you enter is uploaded or stored on a server.
