About the Public Holidays List
Official holiday lists in one place: the Government of India holidays for Central Government offices (gazetted and restricted holidays from the Department of Personnel & Training’s annual memorandum), US federal holidays with their observed days off for any year from 1971, and UK bank holidays for England and Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland from GOV.UK.
For each year you see the next holiday, which holidays fall on a weekend, every long weekend, and the bridge days — one or two days of leave that join a holiday to a weekend. Download the list as an .ics file for Google Calendar, Outlook or Apple Calendar, as CSV for a spreadsheet, or send the days off to the Date Calculator to count working days.
How to use it
- Choose a list (India, the United States or a part of the United Kingdom) and a year.
- For India, tick Include restricted holidays to add the optional holidays from which each employee may choose two.
- Choose the weekend for the India and UK lists: Saturday and Sunday, or Sunday only for a six-day week. Long weekends and bridge days follow this choice; the US list keeps a Monday–Friday week, which its observed days are based on.
- Use Download .ics, Download CSV or Copy list, or Count working days to open the Date Calculator with these days off filled in.
Examples
17 gazetted holidays; Id-ul-Fitr (Sat 21 Mar), Independence Day (Sat 15 Aug) and Diwali (Sun 8 Nov) fall on a weekend
Independence Day is on Saturday 4 July, so federal employees have Friday 3 July off
Boxing Day falls on a Saturday, so the bank holiday is on Monday 28 December
Take Wednesday 1 and Thursday 2 April off
Six days in a row, Tue 31 Mar – Sun 5 Apr (Mahavir Jayanti and Good Friday)
Common uses
- Planning leave around long weekends and bridge days.
- Adding the official holidays to a work or family calendar.
- Counting working days for a project, a notice period or a delivery date.
- Checking a holiday for colleagues or clients in India, the US or the UK.
India: what the DoPT list covers
The Department of Personnel & Training publishes the holidays for the administrative offices of the Central Government in Delhi / New Delhi each year: Office Memorandum No. 12/2/2023-JCA for 2026 and for 2027 (Id-ul-Zuha 2026 was moved to 28 May by OM No. 12/3/2023-JCA). Checked at doptcirculars.nic.in.
- 14 holidays are compulsory in every Central Government office: Republic Day, Independence Day, Mahatma Gandhi’s Birthday, Buddha Purnima, Christmas Day, Dussehra, Diwali, Good Friday, Guru Nanak’s Birthday, Id-ul-Fitr, Id-ul-Zuha, Mahavir Jayanti, Muharram and Id-e-Milad. They are marked all offices.
- Three more are chosen from a list of 12 optional holidays — by DoPT for Delhi (Holi, Ram Navami and Janmashtami in 2026 and 2027), and by the Central Government Employees Welfare Coordination Committee in each state capital elsewhere. They are marked Delhi list.
- Restricted holidays are optional: each employee may take any two of them.
- No substitute holiday is given when a holiday falls on a weekly off. The dates of Id-ul-Fitr, Id-ul-Zuha, Muharram and Id-e-Milad may be changed at short notice after the sighting of the moon.
- Bank holidays follow instructions of the Department of Financial Services, and state government offices follow their state’s own list — both differ from state to state and are not included here.
United States: federal holidays and observed days
5 U.S.C. 6103(a) sets 11 legal public holidays: New Year’s Day, Birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr., Washington’s Birthday, Memorial Day, Juneteenth National Independence Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day. For employees who work Monday to Friday, a holiday on a Saturday is observed on the Friday before (5 U.S.C. 6103(b)) and one on a Sunday on the Monday after (Executive Order 11582). When 1 January falls on a Saturday, the day off is Friday 31 December of the year before — it appears in that year’s list, and the 1 January row says so.
The list is calculated from these rules for any year from 1971, when the Monday holidays began. States, schools and private employers set their own holidays.
United Kingdom: bank holidays
Bank holidays for England and Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland come from GOV.UK (gov.uk/bank-holidays), for 2019 to 2028. When a bank holiday falls on a weekend, a substitute day — usually the following Monday — is the day off. Scotland adds 2 January and St Andrew’s Day, and Northern Ireland adds St Patrick’s Day and the Battle of the Boyne. Long weekends and bridge days
A long weekend is a run of three or more days off that includes a holiday on a weekday. A bridge is one or two working days that sit between a holiday and a weekend: taking them as leave joins the two, for example a Monday before a Tuesday holiday (4 days off for 1 day of leave). Restricted holidays are not counted as days off, because they are optional.
Limitations
- India: only the Central Government lists for Delhi / New Delhi are included, for 2026 and 2027. State government holidays, bank holidays and the three holidays chosen in each state differ.
- United Kingdom: GOV.UK publishes dates up to 2028; local holidays are not included.
- United States: future years follow the current law. One-off days off granted by the President, and Inauguration Day in the Washington, DC area, are not included.
- The lists are part of this page. A change announced later appears only after the page is updated, so check the official source for last-minute changes.

Frequently asked questions
How many holidays do Central Government employees get in 2026?
Offices in Delhi / New Delhi have 17 gazetted holidays, and each employee may also take two restricted holidays. Offices elsewhere observe the 14 compulsory holidays plus three chosen by their state’s coordination committee.
What is a restricted holiday?
An optional holiday. The DoPT memorandum lists them in Annexure II, and each Central Government employee may choose any two in the year. Tick Include restricted holidays to see them.
What happens when a US federal holiday falls on a weekend?
For a Monday-to-Friday schedule, a Saturday holiday is observed on the Friday before and a Sunday holiday on the Monday after. Both the holiday and the observed day are listed.
Can I add these holidays to Google Calendar, Outlook or my phone?
Yes. Download the .ics file and import it into your calendar app. Each holiday is an all-day event marked as free time, so it does not block meetings.
How do I count working days that skip these holidays?
Press Count working days. The Date Calculator opens with the weekday holidays of the list filled in and your weekend setting applied (this replaces the holiday list saved there).
