About the Image to Pixel Art Converter

Turn a photograph or illustration into a deliberate low-resolution grid. Choose the longest grid edge, reduce it to a small palette, add ordered or error-diffusion dithering, and export crisp nearest-neighbour pixels. A numbered grid and a colour key can help with bead art, mosaics and craft layouts. The free preview is reduced and marked; a Pro pass opens the complete image and palette exports.

How to use it

  1. Choose a JPG, PNG or WebP image. The file stays on your device.
  2. Set a grid edge between 16 and 256 pixels; the other edge follows the image proportions.
  3. Choose an automatic palette or a retro palette, or enter your own six-digit hex colours. Compare the dithering methods.
  4. Set enlargement and optional outlines or numbered cells, then generate. Download the PNG or copy the palette with a pass.

Examples

A square bead pattern
Input
Square picture, grid 32, Game Boy palette, numbered cells
Result
32 × 32 cells, four shades, and a numbered colour key.

Dithering and palette choices

Floyd–Steinberg sends quantisation error to the next pixel and the three pixels below, with weights 7/16, 3/16, 5/16 and 1/16. Bayer uses a repeated 4 × 4 threshold pattern. No dithering is best for clear blocks and craft patterns. Automatic palettes reuse the image tools’ colour quantiser, keeping the original opacity separately. The PICO-8 colours follow its official manual; the other retro palettes are artistic RGB approximations rather than hardware emulation.

Limitations

  • Animated images use the first decoded frame. Metadata is not copied.
  • Input images are limited to 16 megapixels to bound memory use. Exports are PNG. Numbered cells use 16–24 pixels, adapting to an export edge of at most 4096 pixels.
  • Outlines may add black to the selected palette. Very thin or detailed shapes can disappear on a small grid.
  • MySmartCoPilot is not affiliated with or endorsed by Nintendo or Lexaloffle.

Frequently asked questions

What do I get without a pass?

Without a pass, Image to Pixel Art Converter shows the result at preview size (up to 640 pixels), with a MySmartCoPilot watermark across it. Until you unlock it, the result can’t be downloaded or copied. A Pro, Premium or Ultimate pass, a one-time payment that never renews, unlocks the full result. The pricing page lists the passes and their prices.

Why does the exported image stay sharp?

Enlargement repeats each grid pixel rather than blending neighbouring colours. The result keeps rectangular pixel boundaries.

Can I enter a custom palette?

Yes. Enter 2 to 64 six-digit colours such as #112233, separated by spaces. The converter only uses those colours, plus black if you enable outlines.

Does the numbered grid change the colours?

The underlying palette stays the same. Numbers and grid lines are drawn over it to make the craft cells readable; use the normal PNG for artwork.
