About the Hindi & Indian Language Typing

Write in Hindi, Marathi, Sanskrit, Bengali, Gujarati, Punjabi, Odia, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada or Malayalam without installing a keyboard. Spell each word in English letters and it turns into the script as you press space — namaste → नमस्ते, vaNakkam → வணக்கம், aami → আমি. Or switch to the InScript keyboard used in offices and typing tests, and type on your own keyboard or tap the keys on the screen.

The result is ordinary Unicode text, so it works in WhatsApp, e-mail, Word, Google Docs, websites and forms. A character palette has every letter and sign of the script, and the chart under the box shows exactly what to type for each letter. Everything happens in your browser and works offline.

How to use it

  1. Choose the language. Keep English letters selected to type phonetically, or choose InScript keyboard.
  2. Type a word in English letters — bhaarat, kyaa, dhanyavaad — and press space or Enter: it turns into भारत, क्या, धन्यवाद. The bar above the box shows what the current word will become.
  3. Use aa, ii, uu for long vowels and capitals for the letters that need them (T = ट, N = ण); open What to type for each letter for the full chart of your language.
  4. Need an English word in between? Press Ctrl + . (or the English button), type it, and press it again. Ctrl/⌘ + Z after a word brings the English letters back.
  5. Pasted romanised text? Press Convert all romanised text; anything between ## marks stays in English. Then Copy or download the text.

Common uses

  • Writing messages, posts and e-mails in Hindi or your own language on a computer without an Indian keyboard.
  • Typing names and addresses in Indian scripts for forms and documents.
  • Practising the InScript layout used in government typing tests.
  • Converting romanised song lyrics, prayers or notes into the original script.

How the English-letter scheme works

The scheme is based on ITRANS 5.3, the long-established standard for writing Indian scripts with English letters, with the same rules for every language. Each letter is spelled the same way every time, so you always know what you will get — there is no dictionary guessing which word you meant:

  • Every vowel is typed: kamalaa gives कमला, while kamlaa gives कम्ला. A consonant with no vowel after it joins the next one (namaste → नमस्ते).
  • Long vowels: aa or A, ii, I or ee, uu, U or oo; ai, au, and RRi for ऋ (kRRipayaa → कृपया).
  • Capitals make the retroflex and other letters: T ट, Th ठ, D ड, Dh ढ, N ण, Sh ष. Other capitals (B, K, P …) are the same as small letters.
  • Signs: M or .n for anusvara (ं), .N for chandrabindu (ँ), H for visarga (ः), .h for a visible virama, | for the danda (।); in Hindi, Sanskrit, Bengali, Punjabi and Odia a full stop at the end of a word also becomes the danda.
  • Conjuncts: x or ksh for क्ष, GY for ज्ञ, shr for श्र; z, f and q give ज़, फ़ and क़.

Each language then follows its own spelling customs — for example Tamil’s ந/ன, Malayalam’s chillu letters, Punjabi’s tippi, bindi and addak, and Bengali’s য়. The note above the chart lists them for the language you choose.

InScript keyboard

InScript is the standard Indian keyboard layout, published by the Bureau of Indian Standards as IS 16350, and the Indian-language keyboard that comes with Windows. Vowel signs are on the left of the keyboard and consonants on the right; Shift gives the independent vowels and the aspirated letters. This tool has the normal and Shift layers. The same key types the same sound in every script — K is क in Hindi, ক in Bengali and க in Tamil — and keys for letters a script does not have are greyed out. On a phone, tap the keys on the screen; on a computer, type on your own keyboard.

Languages and scripts

  • Devanagari: Hindi, Marathi, Sanskrit (Sanskrit ends a final consonant with a virama: jagat → जगत्).
  • Bengali (the palette also has the Assamese letters ৰ and ৱ), Gujarati, Gurmukhi for Punjabi, and Odia.
  • Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam, where e/o are the short vowels and E/O the long ones.

The Devanagari text uses the Noto Sans Devanagari font; the other scripts use your device’s own fonts, which every current phone and computer has.

Limitations

  • Rule-based: it types exactly what you spell and does not guess the intended word (raahul, not rahul, for राहुल). Check the chart for your language.
  • Very common casual spellings that skip vowels or use capitals for names (Rahul, Delhi) can give a different letter: capitals have a meaning in the scheme.
  • The InScript AltGr layer (₹, ॐ, ZWJ …) is not included; use the character palette for those.
  • Typed text is not saved by this page — copy or download it before closing the tab.

Frequently asked questions

How do I type Hindi using an English keyboard?

Choose Hindi, keep English letters selected and spell the word as it sounds: namaste, bhaarat, dhanyavaad. Each word turns into Hindi when you press space. Use aa, ii, uu for long vowels and capital T, D, N, Sh for ट, ड, ण, ष.

Why did my word come out slightly wrong?

Usually a vowel is missing or a capital is needed. rahul gives रहुल; raahul gives राहुल. kamlaa gives कम्ला; kamalaa gives कमला. Press Ctrl/⌘ + Z to get the English letters back and try again, or open the chart.

Can I mix English words in my Hindi text?

Yes. Press Ctrl + . or the English button, type the English words, and press it again to go back. When converting pasted text, put English between ## marks: mujhe ##WhatsApp## pasand hai → मुझे WhatsApp पसन्द है.

Is this the same as the Google or Microsoft input tools?

No. Those predict words from large dictionaries; this tool uses fixed rules (ITRANS), so it works offline, never sends what you type anywhere and always gives the same result for the same spelling.

Which InScript layout is this?

The standard InScript layout: the normal and Shift layers of IS 16350, the same as the Devanagari InScript keyboard in Windows. Other scripts use the same keys for the corresponding letters, as InScript intends; a few keys of your operating system’s own layout for a script (Tamil, for example) can differ, so for a typing test, practise on the layout the test uses.

Is the typed text Unicode?

Yes — it is standard Unicode, so it can be pasted anywhere. If you need Kruti Dev for an old document or a typing test, use the Kruti Dev to Unicode Converter in the Unicode → Kruti Dev direction.
