About the Digital SAT Practice Test (Full-Length and Adaptive)

Take a full-length practice test built like the digital SAT: Reading and Writing in two 32-minute modules of 27 questions, a 10-minute break, then Math in two 35-minute modules of 22 questions. As on test day, the second module of each section is easier or harder depending on how you did in the first, two questions in every module are unscored pretest questions, and you cannot go back to a module once it is submitted. The timer, the question navigator, Mark for review, crossing out answer choices, highlights and notes on passages, a graphing calculator and the reference sheet are all there.

At the end you see an estimated score for each section and in total with its likely range, your raw score in every module, how you did in each content domain, the time you spent on each question, and every question explained: why the right answer is right and the others are not. Every question is MySmartCoPilot’s own, written to the College Board’s published specifications for the test, and your answers stay in your browser.

How to use it

  1. Choose a practice test and what to take: the full test, Reading and Writing only, Math only, or Math module 1 on its own.
  2. Choose the timing (standard, time and a half, double time, or no timer) and press Start the test. Within a module, answer the questions in any order: Mark for review flags a question, and the question list shows which ones are answered or flagged.
  3. In Math, type the answers to the questions without choices as a whole number, a decimal or a fraction (the entry rules are shown beside each one), and open the Calculator or the Reference sheet whenever you need them.
  4. After the last question, check the review page and submit the module. When time runs out, the module is submitted with the answers you have. Save and exit keeps a test in progress in this browser to continue later.
  5. Read your results: estimated scores and their range, raw scores, content domains, time per question and every question with its explanation. Score report (.pdf) saves them. Without a pass, the preview runs Math module 1 of Practice test 1 and shows its raw score.

Examples

A full test
Input
Practice test 1 · standard time · 19 of 25 scored questions right in Reading and Writing module 1
Result
The harder Reading and Writing module 2 follows; after Math, the results show an estimated total with its range, both section estimates and every question explained
Math module 1 only
Input
Practice test 1 · Math module 1 · 35 minutes
Result
The raw score, such as 16 of 22 right (15 of the 20 scored questions); a section estimate needs both modules
A typed answer
Input
A Math answer of two thirds
Result
2/3, .6666, .6667, 0.666 and 0.667 all count; .66 and 0.67 do not, because a decimal must fill the space

Common uses

  • Students preparing for the SAT who want full-length practice under test-day timing, with explanations for every question.
  • Students approved for extended time practicing at time and a half or double time.
  • Tutors and teachers setting a timed module in class, then going through the explanations together.
  • Anyone tracking their estimated score across attempts to see which content domains need work.

How the test is built

  • Reading and Writing: 54 questions in 64 minutes, as two modules of 27 questions in 32 minutes each. Every question has one short passage (or a pair of passages, a table or a student’s notes) of 25 to 150 words and four answer choices. The questions come in four content domains, in this order in each module: Craft and Structure (about 28% of the section), Information and Ideas (about 26%), Standard English Conventions (about 26%) and Expression of Ideas (about 20%). Within a domain they go by skill and then from easier to harder; conventions questions go from easier to harder.
  • Math: 44 questions in 70 minutes, as two modules of 22 questions in 35 minutes each, from easier to harder: Algebra (about 35%), Advanced Math (about 35%), Problem-Solving and Data Analysis (about 15%) and Geometry and Trigonometry (about 15%). About a quarter of the questions have no answer choices: you type the answer. A calculator is allowed throughout.
  • The break: 10 minutes between the sections. You cannot go back to Reading and Writing after it, or to a module once it is submitted.
  • Pretest questions: two in every module, mixed in with the others and not marked. They do not count toward the score, here as on test day; the results show which ones they were.

The adaptive second module

Module 1 of each section mixes easier, medium and harder questions. If you get at least 60% of its scored questions right, module 2 is the harder one; otherwise it is the easier one. The College Board does not publish its routing rule, so this threshold is MySmartCoPilot’s; it sends a typical student to the module that matches them. Either way, both modules count toward the section score, and the estimate weighs every answer by how hard its question is: a right answer to a harder question raises it more than a right answer to an easier one.

Typed Math answers

The rules are the ones the College Board gives with its practice tests:

  • Up to 5 characters for a positive answer and 6 for a negative one, the minus sign included.
  • A fraction that does not fit goes in as a decimal; a decimal that does not fit is cut off or rounded at the fourth digit. For two thirds, 2/3, .6666, .6667, 0.666 and 0.667 all count; .66, .67, 0.66 and 0.67 do not.
  • A mixed number goes in as an improper fraction (7/2) or a decimal (3.5), never as 3 1/2.
  • No symbols such as %, $ or commas.
  • If more than one answer is right, enter one of them.

The answer box tells you when an entry breaks a rule, and its preview shows the value the entry is read as (7/2 is 3.5).

How the score estimate works

The College Board scores the digital SAT with item response theory: the score depends on which questions you got right and on their difficulty, not just on how many, and it does not publish a conversion for the adaptive test. The estimate here is MySmartCoPilot’s own model of the same idea. Each scored question has a difficulty (easier, medium or harder); your answers give an ability on a one-parameter (Rasch) scale; and that ability is placed on the 200 to 800 scale through the conversion table the College Board published for the paper version of its SAT Practice Test 4, a longer, non-adaptive form of the same test.

The result is a section estimate with a likely range of about ±40 points, and a total from 400 to 1600. Read it as a guide to where you stand and how you improve from one attempt to the next, not as the score you will get: real scores also depend on the day, and the College Board’s own model is more detailed.

The questions

Every question was written for MySmartCoPilot to the College Board’s published content domains, skills and question formats; none is taken from the College Board. Informational passages state well-established facts or describe made-up people, places and data, and literary passages are original. Each question comes with an explanation of the right answer and of the tempting wrong ones, and Math explanations show the working.

Limitations

  • MySmartCoPilot is not affiliated with or endorsed by the College Board.
  • This is a practice test, not the real one: the questions are MySmartCoPilot’s, the score is an estimate with a range, and the routing threshold is MySmartCoPilot’s own.
  • Each question’s difficulty (easier, medium or harder) is MySmartCoPilot’s own rating, not one measured on students taking the test, and the hardest questions on test day can be harder than any here. Estimates near the top of the scale may therefore run high.
  • It runs in the browser rather than in the College Board’s test app: the tools work the same way, but they look different.
  • The calculator is MySmartCoPilot’s graphing calculator, not the one built into the test app, and the reference sheet is our own summary of common formulas.
  • A test in progress and your results are kept in this browser only: another browser or device does not see them, and clearing site data removes them.
  • The preview runs Math module 1 of Practice test 1 with its raw score; every test, every module, the estimates, the explanations and the report come with a Pro pass.

Frequently asked questions

What do I get without a pass?

Without a pass, Digital SAT Practice Test (Full-Length and Adaptive) shows one complete Math module 1 of Practice test 1, timed as on test day, with its raw score. Until you unlock it, the result can’t be downloaded. A Pro, Premium or Ultimate pass, a one-time payment that never renews, unlocks the full result. The pricing page lists the passes and their prices.

How close is the estimated score to a real SAT score?

It is a guide, not a prediction: it uses which questions you got right and how hard they are, as the real test does, but with MySmartCoPilot’s own simpler model, anchored to a published College Board conversion. Treat the range, about 40 points either side of each section estimate, as the useful part.

Are these official College Board questions?

No. Every question is MySmartCoPilot’s own, written to the College Board’s published content specifications. For official practice tests, use the College Board’s own app.

Can I pause the test?

Save and exit keeps your answers, flags, notes and the time left in this browser; Continue the test picks up where you stopped. On test day there is no pause except the break, so try to take at least one test in one sitting.

Which answer should I give when I am not sure?

Answer every question. A wrong answer costs nothing more than a blank one, here as on the real test, so cross out the choices you can rule out and pick from the rest.

Why did I get the easier module 2?

Fewer than 60% of the scored questions in module 1 were right. Both modules count, and the estimate weighs every question by its difficulty, so every right answer in module 2 still raises the estimate.

Do pretest questions count?

No. Two questions in every module are unscored, as on test day. You cannot tell which they are while you take the test; the results mark them.
