About the Cake Pricing Calculator for Home Bakers
Price cakes, cupcakes, cookies and desserts from what they really cost you. Enter each ingredient from its pack — the pack size, what you paid and the amount the bake uses — the packaging, boards and decorations, the oven’s energy for the baking time, your hours at the rate you want to earn, delivery, any marketplace commission and card fees, the profit margin and, if you are registered, the sales tax, VAT or GST you charge.
The calculator gives the cost, the minimum price that covers it with the fees, the suggested price with your margin, rounded up to a step you choose, the price per serving from the cake’s size, a serving chart for common pan sizes and a short quote for a custom order. It works in any currency, and it keeps your ingredient prices and recipes in this browser. Without a pass the free preview shows the suggested price in full, with the first rows of each table; the other figures, the quote’s copy, the CSV and printing need a Pro pass.
How to use it
- Choose what you are pricing — a cake (with its shape, size and slice size) or a batch of cupcakes, cookies or another bake (with the number of pieces) — and the currency.
- Add each ingredient: its pack size and unit, what the pack cost, and how much the bake uses in the same kind of unit (weight, volume or pieces). Type an ingredient you kept before to fill in its pack.
- Add packaging, boards and decorations, then your hours and hourly rate, the oven (power, minutes and electricity price, or a cost an hour for gas) and any delivery cost.
- Enter the fees, your profit margin and the step to round the price up to. Tick the tax box if you are registered and enter your rate.
- Read the suggested and minimum prices, the price per serving and the quote. Copy the quote, download the CSV or print it with a Pro pass or after unlocking this result; the free preview shows the suggested price.

Common uses
- Pricing birthday and celebration cakes from a home kitchen so each order pays for your time.
- Quoting a custom cake for a customer with a deposit, from a price per serving.
- Checking whether a cupcake box or cookie batch on a marketplace still makes money after its commission.
- Seeing how a price rise of butter or electricity changes every recipe you keep.
How the price is worked out
Each ingredient costs its pack price × the amount used ÷ the pack size, in the same unit (225 g from a 1 kg bag at 1.20 is 0.27). The cost adds the ingredients, packaging and decorations, the oven’s energy (power in kW × hours × the price of a kWh), your hours × your rate and delivery. The price before tax then covers the cost, the fees and the margin:
- price before tax = (cost + fixed card fee) ÷ (1 − margin − commission − card fee × (1 + tax rate))
The card fee is charged on what the customer pays, tax included; a marketplace takes its commission of the price before tax. The minimum price is the same with a margin of 0, and both are rounded up to your step. Your hourly rate is part of the cost, so the margin is profit on top of your pay.
Servings and the serving chart
A cake’s servings are worked out from the area of its top: a party slice is 1.5 × 2 inches and a wedding slice 1 × 2 inches, for a cake about 4 inches (10 cm) tall. An 8-inch round cake has 50.3 square inches on top, so 16 party slices or 25 wedding slices. The chart lists round and square cakes of the common sizes with the price of each at your price per serving — a quick way to quote a different size. Tiers, unusual shapes and the way you cut change the count, so enter your own number of servings when you know it.
Tax on cakes
Enter the rate you charge; the page does not decide which rate applies to you.
- United Kingdom: cakes — sponges, fruit cakes, meringues and commemorative cakes such as wedding, anniversary and birthday cakes — are zero-rated for VAT, but standard-rated when supplied in the course of catering; biscuits covered or partly covered in chocolate are standard-rated, while chocolate chip biscuits are zero-rated (HMRC VAT Notice 701/14, section 3.4).
- India: pastry, cakes, biscuits and other bakers’ wares (heading 1905) carry GST at 5% (GST Council press release).
- Elsewhere, use the sales tax, VAT or GST rate of the place where you sell, if you are registered.
Limitations
- Weights and volumes do not convert into each other (a cup of flour weighs less than a cup of sugar): give the pack and the amount used in the same kind of unit.
- The oven’s power is the most it can use; a thermostat switches the heat on and off, so the real energy is usually lower.
- Equipment, insurance, rent and training are not costs here unless you add them as other costs per bake.
- Income tax on your profit is not included, and the tax rate is the one you enter.

Frequently asked questions
What do I get without a pass?
Without a pass, Cake Pricing Calculator for Home Bakers shows the suggested price in full, with the first rows of each table (up to 3) and the first step of the working; every other figure and the quote are hidden. Until you unlock it, the result can’t be downloaded, copied or printed. A Pro, Premium or Ultimate pass, a one-time payment that never renews, unlocks the full result. The pricing page lists the passes and their prices.
How much should I charge for a cake?
At least what it costs you — ingredients, packaging, decorations, the oven’s energy and your time at a fair hourly rate — plus the fees, and then a margin for profit. In the example, an 8-inch sponge costs 58.72 to make with three hours of work, so 61 only breaks even and 82 leaves a 25% margin.
How many servings are in an 8-inch round cake?
By area, 16 party slices (1.5 × 2 in) or 25 wedding slices (1 × 2 in) for a cake about 4 inches tall. A 10-inch round cake gives 26 or 39.
How do I price my time?
Count every hour the order takes — shopping, baking, decorating, packing and cleaning up — at the hourly rate you want to earn. It is a cost, so even the minimum price pays you for it; the margin comes on top.
Do I charge VAT on cakes in the UK?
Cakes are zero-rated for VAT, including wedding and birthday cakes, unless they are supplied in the course of catering, when they are standard-rated (HMRC VAT Notice 701/14). Chocolate-covered biscuits are standard-rated.
What is the GST on cakes in India?
Pastry, cakes, biscuits and other bakers’ wares under heading 1905 carry GST at 5%, according to the GST Council’s press release. Enter it as your tax rate if you are registered.
Are my recipes and ingredient prices saved?
In this browser on this device: “Keep these ingredient prices” remembers each pack, and you can keep recipes under their names and back them up to a JSON file. Nothing is uploaded.
