About Velvet Mosaic: Chainburst

A seaside villa is having its floor laid, and the afternoon is clear. White columns stand at the edge of the terrace, vine leaves stir on the pergola, and below the cypress hills the bay glitters. On the board lie six kinds of polished stone slab, each veined, each with a border of tiny tesserae and its own shape and its own motif inlaid in ivory: a rosette, nested triangles, a square in a square, a chain of lozenges, a hexagon and an eight-point star. Swap two neighbours to line up three or more, and they clear.

Among the slabs stand Roman glass flasks with a drop of golden oil in the belly. They never match, and each one must be brought down to the floor of its column. A clear right beside a flask cracks it a little, and a flask that takes too many cracks breaks and ends the board. So clear gently: work away from the glass, let the stone beneath it go first, and keep it falling.

Cascades are chains, and chains win every board. Each board names the depth of cascade it wants, how many times, and a score to reach. Every flask that lands safely lays a rosette of tesserae on its column, one small square at a time. A cascade four deep lays the black-and-ivory border round the whole tray. Clear the board and the floor is complete: a great rosette, the border, and a white dove let out over the terrace.

The music is an unhurried Aegean dance on lyre and double-reed aulos, with finger cymbals and a frame drum that join as your chains grow. Every board can be won: it is built together with a player that solves it first, and a hint is one press away. Settings offers more moves, or none at all, and a switch for the floor laying. How to play

  1. Drag a slab toward a neighbour, or tap one slab and then the next. Arrow keys and Enter or Space also work.
  2. Line up three or more of a colour to clear them. Glass flasks never match: bring each one down to the floor.
  3. A clear beside a flask cracks it. Clear gently, and do not let a flask crack right through.
  4. Cascades are chains. Land every flask and meet the chain targets of the board, the depth and the number of times.
  5. Press H or the Hint button for a move that works. Press P, Escape or Start to pause.

Controls

  • Drag a tile, or tap two tiles — swap
  • Arrow keys or WASD, then Enter or Space — swap
  • H or Ⓨ — hint

Frequently asked questions

How do the glass flasks work?

A flask never matches. Each one has to reach the floor of its own column. A clear right beside it cracks it a little, and each move can crack a flask only once. If a flask takes too many cracks it breaks and the board ends.

What is the Floor Laid?

Each flask that lands safely lays a rosette of tesserae, a cascade four deep lays the border round the tray, and a cleared board completes the floor and lets a dove fly out. You can switch the floor laying off in Settings.

Can every board be won?

Yes. Each board is made together with a solving player that lands every flask, so a way to win always exists. Ask for a hint with H or the Hint button, or switch to more moves in Settings.
