About Prism Garden: Hidden Bloom

Beside the observatory, behind a warm adobe wall, there is a garden kept for the sun. At its heart lies a square sundial of white marble with hour lines cut from its centre, and in its raked sand beds grow succulents made of glass: barrel cacti, aloe fans, cushions of sedum, agave leaves, echeveria rosettes and star cacti, each throwing a short hard shadow at noon. Under some of them, sun-blooms are asleep.

Swap neighbouring succulents to line up three or more of a kind. Each plate has three hours, each with its own objective shown in the panel: clear so many of one kind. Meet it and the whole dial turns a quarter, with a grind of stone and a bronze bell, so the glass falls a new way.

Clear over a sleeping bloom and its bud shows; clear over the bud and it opens. As it does, the gnomon’s long shadow swings round the dial to point straight at it, and the sun glints there. Open two blooms within the same hour, before the dial turns again, for 250 points. When the last bloom opens it is high noon: the shadow shrinks to nothing and light floods the garden.

Twelve plates are laid out by hand, each with its blooms and its hours chosen by hand: a morning plate, four pots, an agave ring, hour lines, a cactus cross, a noon court, a sun rose, a pinwheel and more. Every plate keeps its shape when it turns. Later plates ask more each hour, and today’s plate changes every day. Every plate can be won, and a hint is one press away; Settings offers more moves or no limit at all.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the dial turn?

Each plate is a day of three hours. When you meet an hour’s objective, the dial turns a quarter and the next hour begins, so the glass falls toward a different side and new lines open up.

Where are the sun-blooms?

Under the succulents, in the sand. A sleeping bloom cannot be seen until a succulent over it is cleared. Then a bud mark shows; clear over it once more and it opens.

What does the shadow do?

It is the gnomon’s shadow. It moves on an hour with each turn, and swings to point at every bloom as it opens. At high noon it disappears. Settings can hide it.

Can every plate be won?

Yes. Each plate is solved by a computer player before you see it, so a way to win always exists. Your stars, bests and badges stay in this browser only.
