About Petal Lantern: Hidden Bloom

It is raining on the glass roof of an old clockwork greenhouse, and the night is not over. Brass cogs turn behind the panes, steam rises from the pipes in the floor, and rows of glass bulb lanterns glow over the soil beds. Six kinds of bulb, six shapes, six colours of nectar: a coil, a fern, a cage, a gem, a honeycomb and a spark.

Under some of the bulbs, seeds are sleeping. Clear a bulb above one and a green bud shows; clear over the bud and it opens into a lily with golden stamens. A board is won when every hidden bloom is open, and a clever cascade can wake several at once.

The greenhouse answers each bloom. The rain eases, a roof vent swings open, shafts of light come down through the glass, and a butterfly flies out of the flower to stay with you for the rest of the board. The last bloom lets the sun rise over the hills. At the foot of some columns, brass valve gates ask for a colour too: fill a gate’s vial by clearing that colour in its column.

The music is a slow music box in twelve-eight time with a ticking escapement, and birds join in as the dawn nears. Every board can be won: it is built together with a player that solves it first, and a hint is one press away. Settings offers more moves, or none at all, and a switch for the rain, steam and butterflies. Stars and best scores stay in this browser and nothing is uploaded.

How to play

  1. Drag a bulb toward a neighbour, or tap one bulb and then the next. Arrow keys and Enter or Space also work.
  2. Line up three or more of a colour to clear them. A clear over a seed shows its bud; clear over the bud to open the bloom.
  3. Open every hidden bloom to win the board. Each one brings the dawn closer.
  4. Brass valve gates want one colour. Clear it in the gate’s column until the vial is full.
  5. Press H or the Hint button for a move that works. Press P, Escape or Start to pause.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find the hidden blooms?

They sleep under the bulbs. Clear a bulb that sits above a seed and a bud shows; the goal panel counts how many are showing. Clear over the bud again and it opens.

What does the dawn do?

It follows your progress. Each open bloom eases the rain, opens a roof vent at the halfway mark and at the end, and sends a butterfly into the greenhouse. The last bloom lets the sun rise.

How do the valve gates work?

A gate wants one colour. Every bulb of that colour you clear in the gate’s own column fills its vial a little. When it is full the gate opens.

Does it save my progress?

Your stars, best scores and badges are saved in this browser only, and nothing is uploaded.
