About Petal Lantern: Color Circuit

Under the sea there is a city of glass towers, and its lantern keepers have not gone home. Six kinds of jelly lantern drift on the board in six colours and six shapes: round, tent, box, kite, hexagon and star. Swap two neighbours to line up three or more, and they burst into bubbles and light.

Each board has a circuit, a short row of colours shown beside it. Clear the colours in that order, one after another, and the current runs on; close the circuit and it counts. At the foot of some columns stand sluice gates that each want one colour in their own column. A board is won when the circuit has closed as often as it asks and every gate is open, and a single swap can do both, because the lanterns that fall after a clear can clear again by themselves.

The towers behind the board are the circuit made visible. Each step of the circuit switches on a few windows, and when it closes the Flood Surge crosses the district: a band of light, a rush of bubbles and a brass bell, leaving the windows it has crossed lit. The more of a board you finish, the brighter the city.

The music is a slow tide on glass harmonica and kalimba with a soft pulse below, and the sounds are glass, water and brass. Every board can be won: it is built together with a player that solves it first, and a hint is one press away. Settings offers more moves, or none at all, and a switch for the Flood Surge. How to play

  1. Drag a lantern toward a neighbour, or tap one lantern and then the next. Arrow keys and Enter or Space also work.
  2. Line up three or more of a colour to light them up. New lanterns drift down after every clear.
  3. Clear the colours of the circuit in order. A colour out of turn does not break it: the current simply waits.
  4. Each sluice gate wants one colour. Clear that colour in its own column until the count is full and the gate rises.
  5. Press H or the Hint button for a move that works. Press P, Escape or Start to pause.

Controls

  • Drag a tile, or tap two tiles — swap
  • Arrow keys or WASD, then Enter or Space — swap
  • H or Ⓨ — hint
  • P, Escape or Start — pause

Frequently asked questions

How does the circuit work?

The circuit is a short row of colours beside the board. Clear lanterns of the first colour, then the second, and so on to the end to close it. Clearing a colour out of turn does not undo anything: the current waits at the colour it needs.

How do the sluice gates work?

A gate wants one colour. Every lantern of that colour you clear in the gate’s own column fills it a little. When the count is full the gate rises and glows. Several gates can open on the same move.

What is the Flood Surge?

When the circuit closes, a band of light crosses the drowned city behind the board with a rush of bubbles and a brass bell, and the windows it crosses stay lit. You can switch it off in Settings.
