Putting numbers on an investment before and after you make it

For individual investors, traders, finance students and anyone deciding on a project or a property: the tools measure what an investment has returned, project what regular saving might grow to, put a value on a share, a bond or a stream of cash flows, and show the risk taken for a return. Most of them work in any currency.

How to choose

Choose by the question you are asking:

Projected growth uses the return you enter; none of the calculators predicts a market or recommends what to buy.

Worked example: 10,000 to start and 500 a month for 20 years at 7 %

An investor puts 10,000 in at the start and adds 500 at the end of every month for 20 years, assuming a return of 7 % a year.

  1. A 7 % yearly return compounds at about 0.565 % a month on the money already invested.

  2. Over 240 months the contributions come to 120,000, so 130,000 is put in altogether.

  3. The balance at the end is 292,465.03.

  4. Growth is therefore 162,465.03, more than the money put in, all of it resting on the 7 % being earned every year.

Questions

When should I use XIRR instead of CAGR?

CAGR suits one sum invested once and valued later. When money goes in or comes out on several dates, as with monthly investments or partial sales, XIRR gives the yearly return on each amount for the time it was invested.

Do these calculators forecast prices or returns?

No. They work on the prices, cash flows and rates you enter. A projection shows what a rate would produce, not what a market will do.

What does the Sharpe ratio tell me?

How much return above a safe benchmark, such as treasury bills, a portfolio earned for each unit of volatility. A higher ratio means more return for the ups and downs taken, measured on the period you give it.

Which currency do the tools use?

Most work in any currency, since the formulas do not depend on one. The tools made for India, such as the SIP and margin calculators, follow Indian rules and use rupees.
