Knowing what a loan costs before and after you sign

For anyone taking, comparing or paying off a loan: a home, car, gold or education loan, a card balance carried from month to month, a no-cost EMI at checkout or a student loan in the UK, Australia, New Zealand or the US. The calculators show the instalment, every rupee or dollar of interest and the true yearly cost of an offer.

How to choose

Choose by the stage of the loan:

None of them offers, ranks or recommends a lender: they work on the terms you are given.

Worked example: the EMI and total interest on a 20-year home loan

A home loan of ₹50,00,000 at 8.5 % a year is taken for 20 years, repaid in equal monthly instalments.

  1. The monthly rate is 8.5 % ÷ 12, about 0.708 %, applied over 240 months.

  2. The formula P × r × (1 + r)ⁿ ÷ ((1 + r)ⁿ − 1) gives an EMI of ₹43,391.

  3. The 240 instalments add up to ₹1,04,13,879.

  4. So ₹54,13,879 of the total is interest, more than the amount borrowed.

Questions

Why does a 7 % flat-rate loan cost more than 7 %?

A flat rate charges interest on the whole amount for the whole term, although you repay part of it every month. On the reducing balance the same instalments mean a rate close to double, as the flat versus reducing calculator shows for your figures.

Does prepaying reduce the EMI or the tenure?

Either, as the lender allows. The loan calculator shows how much interest each choice saves, and a prepayment early in the term saves the most because the balance is highest then.

Why is the APR higher than the quoted rate?

The APR adds what you pay to take the loan, such as a processing fee, the tax on it and any insurance, to the interest. Two offers at the same rate can therefore have different APRs.

How long does paying only the minimum due on a card take?

Often many years. In the card calculator’s own example, ₹50,000 at 3.75 % a month with GST on the interest takes 167 payments when only the minimum due is paid each month.
