About the Words to Pages Converter (How Many Pages Is My Essay?)

Find out how many pages an essay, report or story of a given length fills — or how many words you need for a page target. Instead of one fixed “words per page” figure, the converter lays the words out line by line the way a word processor does: each word is measured with the real letter widths of the font (Times New Roman, Arial, Calibri or Courier New), a line breaks before the word that no longer fits, the first line of each paragraph is indented, and the lines fill the page at the font’s line height times your line spacing.

Choose APA, MLA or your own font, size, spacing, margins and paper (US Letter or A4), then enter a word count or paste your own text for an exact layout. The result shows the pages, the printed pages, a range for more or fewer paragraph breaks and headings, words per page, the same words with other settings, an estimate for handwritten pages, and how it was worked out. Without a pass, the free preview shows the page estimate in full; a Pro pass unlocks the rest.

How to use it

  1. Enter the number of words (or choose My text and paste your essay, or Pages → words to work backwards from a page count).
  2. Pick the rules — APA 7, MLA, or plain double, 1.5 or single spacing — or set the font, size, line spacing, margins, indent and paper yourself.
  3. For a word count, choose the kind of writing: academic words are longer and fill more lines than everyday prose.
  4. Read the pages and the range. Open Handwritten pages and enter your words per line for handwriting.
  5. Copy the summary line — with a Pro pass, or after unlocking this result.

Common uses

  • Checking whether an essay meets a page minimum or stays under a page limit before you format it.
  • Turning a page requirement (“5 pages, double-spaced”) into a word target.
  • Comparing how the same text fits in Times New Roman, Arial and Calibri, or with single, 1.5 and double spacing.
  • Estimating handwritten pages for an exam answer or a handwritten assignment.

How the estimate works

  • Text area: the paper (US Letter 8.5 × 11 in, or A4 210 × 297 mm) less the margins.
  • Line height: font size × the font’s single line × the line spacing. Times New Roman’s single line is about 1.15 times its size, so 12 pt single spacing is 13.8 pt and double spacing 27.6 pt; Calibri’s is about 1.22 (11 pt single: 13.4 pt).
  • Lines per page: whole lines that fit in the text area’s height (23 double-spaced 12-point lines on a page with 1-inch margins).
  • Lines of text: every word measured with the font’s widths and placed on a line until the next word does not fit; a word longer than a line breaks at the margin; each paragraph starts on a new line after its first-line indent.
  • Pages: the lines filled onto pages, with any space after paragraphs; the last page counts by how full it is, so 3.4 pages is three pages and a little under half of a fourth.

Widths come from metric-compatible open fonts drawn to the same letter widths: Liberation Serif for Times New Roman, Liberation Sans for Arial, Liberation Mono for Courier New and Carlito for Calibri.

Word counts without the text

When you enter only a number, the converter lays out that many words of a reference passage written for this page — academic writing, everyday prose, or the two mixed as an essay — with its own paragraph breaks. The range shows the same words as one long paragraph (the fewest pages) and with a paragraph every 60 words and a heading every 300 (the most). Your own writing may use longer or shorter words, so for the exact count paste the text under My text.

APA and MLA settings

  • APA 7 (student papers): 1-inch margins on every side, double spacing throughout with no extra space between paragraphs, the first line of each paragraph indented 0.5 in, and a legible font such as 12-point Times New Roman, 11-point Calibri, 11-point Arial or 11-point Georgia; the title page is page 1 (APA Style: paper format, APA Student Paper Setup Guide). Because fonts take up different amounts of space, a word count is a steadier measure of a paper’s length than a page count.
  • MLA: 1-inch margins, an easily readable typeface such as Times New Roman at a standard size such as 12 points, double spacing throughout, and the first line of each paragraph indented half an inch; the first page starts with your name, your instructor’s name, the course and the date, then the title (MLA Handbook: Introduction to Formatting Your Research Project, the free preview chapter of the handbook that the MLA Style Center points to).

If your instructor’s rules differ, set the font, spacing and margins yourself.

Handwritten pages

Handwriting varies far more than type, so the converter asks for your own words per line (count a few full lines and take the average). Lines per page are filled in from the ruling — college ruled (9/32 in), wide ruled (11/32 in), narrow ruled (1/4 in) or A4 ruled at 8 mm — over the page’s height less about an inch at the top and half an inch at the bottom; count the lines on your own paper if it differs.

Limitations

  • An estimate: word processors also apply widow and orphan control, hyphenation and their own handling of headings, so the page break of a real document can move by a line or two.
  • Letter widths cover Latin-script text; letters of other scripts are measured as an average letter.
  • Headings, block quotations, footnotes, tables, images and the reference list are not styled separately: paste them under My text as ordinary paragraphs, or allow for them.
  • Fonts other than Times New Roman, Arial (and Helvetica, which has the same widths), Calibri and Courier New are not measured.

Frequently asked questions

What do I get without a pass?

Without a pass, Words to Pages Converter (How Many Pages Is My Essay?) shows the page or word estimate in full, with the first rows of the comparison and the first step of the working; every other figure is hidden. Until you unlock it, the result can’t be copied. A Pro, Premium or Ultimate pass, a one-time payment that never renews, unlocks the full result. The pricing page lists the passes and their prices.

How many pages is 1,000 words?

Double-spaced in 12-point Times New Roman with 1-inch margins, about 3.4 pages here (3.1 to 3.7 depending on paragraphs and headings); single-spaced with a blank line between paragraphs, about 1.9. Longer words, a larger font or wider margins mean more pages — enter your own settings for your case.

Why do other sites give a different words-per-page number?

Many calculators divide by one fixed words-per-page average for every text. Here the words are laid out in the real widths of the font you choose, so the result changes with the font, size, margins, indent and the length of your words — and with your own text it is exact for that text.

Does it include the title page and the references?

The APA preset adds a title page; the MLA option adds the first-page heading lines. A reference list is text like any other: paste it under My text with the essay to count its pages too.

Is my text uploaded?

No. The layout is worked out in your browser and the text never leaves your device.
