    About the Spell Checker

Paste or type your text and every word that is not in the dictionary is underlined, with suggested corrections. Fix a mistake everywhere at once with one click, ignore names you know are right, or add them to a personal dictionary that this browser remembers.

The checker uses open-source Hunspell dictionaries — the kind LibreOffice and Firefox use — for English (US, UK, Australian and Canadian spelling), French, Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese and Dutch. The dictionary for your language is downloaded once when you start; the checking itself happens on your device and your text is never uploaded.

    How to use it

    1. Choose the Dictionary: for example English (UK, India) for “colour” and “organise”, or English (US) for “color” and “organize”.
    2. Type or paste your text, or use Open file for a .txt or .md file. The first check downloads the dictionary (0.2–1.4 MB); later checks are instant.
    3. Read the Possible mistakes list. Choose a suggestion to correct the word — all of its occurrences change unless you untick Change all.
    4. Use Edit to type your own correction, Ignore for a word that is right, or Add to dictionary to accept it from now on.
    5. Copy or download the corrected text. Undo reverses the last correction.

    Examples

    Common English misspellings (English US)
    Input
We will definately recieve the seperate invoices untill Friday.
    Result
    definately → definitely
    recieve → receive
    seperate → separate
    untill → until
    Missing accents (Spanish, Portuguese, French)
    Input
Spanish: cancion, informacion · Portuguese: voce · French: ecrire
    Result
    cancion → canción
    informacion → información
    voce → você
    ecrire → écrire

Accents are easy to leave out on a keyboard that does not have them; the accented form is usually the first suggestion.

    UK and US spelling
    Input
The center will organize a color workshop.
    Result
English (UK, India): center → centre, organize → organise, color → colour
    English (US): no mistakes

    Common uses

    • Proofreading e-mails, essays, reports and web copy before you send or publish them.
    • Making a document follow one spelling standard, such as British spelling for an Indian or UK audience.
    • Checking text written in a second language, where missing accents are easy to overlook.
    • Checking text in a plain editor, CMS or form that has no spell check of its own.

    Dictionaries and licences

    • English (US, UK/India, Australia, Canada): SCOWL-based Hunspell dictionaries by Kevin Atkinson (MIT and BSD licences). Suggestions are ranked with SCOWL’s word lists of common words.
    • French: Grammalecte dictionary 7.5, “classique” variant (MPL 2.0).
    • Spanish: RLA-ES dictionary 2.8 for Spain (used under its MPL 1.1 option).
    • Portuguese: VERO 3.2 by Raimundo Santos Moura, Brazilian Portuguese (used under its MPL 2.0 option).
    • Dutch: OpenTaal 2.20, including Dutch compound words (used under its BSD licence).

The dictionaries are the unmodified files packaged by the open-source wooorm/dictionaries project, and are served from this site. Their licence notices are on the open-source credits page.

What is checked and what is skipped

Every word is looked up with the dictionary’s own rules for prefixes, suffixes and compounds, so “mangeons”, “falávamos” and “voetbalwedstrijd” are recognised even though only their base words are listed. Capitalised words at the start of a sentence are fine, and words written in capitals are checked against the lower-case form.

By default the checker skips words in CAPITALS (NASA, HTML), words with numbers (mp3, 2nd, COVID-19), web and e-mail addresses, @mentions, #hashtags and inline code. Abbreviations with dots such as e.g., i.e. and U.S. are always skipped. Untick the options under Skip to check those words too.

    How suggestions are found

Suggestions follow Hunspell’s strategies: the dictionary’s table of common misspellings, missing or wrong accents, two letters swapped (teh → the), keyboard neighbours, a missing, extra or doubled letter, and two words run together (alot → a lot). If those find little, similar words in the dictionary are compared letter by letter. For English, common words are ranked first.

    Limitations

    • This is a spelling checker, not a grammar checker: a correctly spelled wrong word (“their” for “there”, “form” for “from”) is not flagged.
    • Names, brands and technical terms are often missing from dictionaries. Add the ones you use to your personal dictionary.
    • The Portuguese dictionary follows Brazilian spelling, so some European Portuguese spellings are flagged. The Spanish dictionary is the one for Spain; most Latin American usage is covered, but some regional words may be missing.
    • Very long Dutch compounds can occasionally be flagged even though they are correct.
    • As in Hunspell, a run of more than 100 letters (a pasted code, a held-down key) is reported as a mistake without being looked up, and words longer than 60 letters get no suggestions.
    • The first check of each language needs an internet connection to download its dictionary. Browsers normally cache it afterwards, but working offline is not guaranteed.

    Privacy

Your text is checked in your browser and is never uploaded. The dictionary for the language you choose is downloaded from MySmartCoPilot the first time you use it. Your personal dictionary is stored only in this browser (local storage); clearing your browser data removes it, so use Export to keep a copy.

    Frequently asked questions

Is my text sent to a server?

No. The dictionary is downloaded to your browser and every word is checked on your device. Nothing you type is uploaded.

Which English should I choose for India?

Indian English generally follows British spelling (colour, centre, organise), so choose English (UK, India). Choose English (US) for American spelling.

Why is a correct word underlined?

It is not in the dictionary — usually a name, brand, technical term or a rare word. Choose Ignore to skip it for now, or Add to dictionary to accept it every time.

Where is my personal dictionary saved?

In this browser’s local storage, on this device only. It is shared by all languages. Use Export to save it as a text file and Import to load it on another device.

Why are words in capitals not checked?

Words written entirely in capitals are usually acronyms or codes (GST, PDF, NASA). Untick Skip words in CAPITALS to check them too.

    Does it work offline?

Not reliably. The first check of each language needs a connection to download its dictionary. Browsers normally cache the dictionary afterwards, so a page you have already used may keep working offline, but this is not guaranteed.
