PNG type

Every pixel and its transparency kept exactly.

Up to 256 colours — much smaller for logos, icons and screenshots. Exact when the image has 256 colours or fewer.

Animated WebP

Choose the frame with the Frame slider on each animated file.

Each animated file becomes numbered PNGs, one per frame.

About the WebP to PNG Converter

Convert WebP images to PNG with every pixel kept exactly, including transparency. Files are decoded with libwebp, the reference WebP decoder (compiled to WebAssembly and run in your browser), straight to the PNG — not through a browser canvas, which rounds the colours of partly transparent pixels. Soft shadows, anti-aliased edges and invisible colour values under transparent areas come out exactly as they are in the WebP.

Animated WebP files are handled too: export one chosen frame, or every frame as numbered PNGs in a ZIP. For logos, icons and screenshots you can also save an 8-bit palette PNG (up to 256 colours), which is often much smaller. Nothing is uploaded, and the page works offline once loaded.

How to use it

  1. Drop WebP files onto the box or click Choose WebP images — you can select many files at once.
  2. Choose Lossless (exact copy) or 8-bit palette (smaller files for graphics with few colours).
  3. For animated WebP, choose One frame and pick it with the file’s Frame slider, or Every frame to get the whole sequence.
  4. Download each PNG (animations download as a ZIP of frames), or Download all as one ZIP.

Examples

Transparent sticker
Input
sticker.webp · 512 × 512 with a transparent background · Lossless
Result
sticker.png with identical pixels and the same transparency — ready for slides, documents or design apps.
Every frame of an animation
Input
loading.webp · 30 frames · Every frame
Result
loading-frames/loading-frame-01.png … loading-frame-30.png in a ZIP, each frame complete (not just the changed area).
Flat logo as an 8-bit PNG
Input
logo.webp · 2 colours plus anti-aliasing · 8-bit palette
Result
logo.png as an indexed PNG. If the image has 256 colours or fewer, all are kept and nothing is lost.

Common uses

  • Editing WebP images in software that opens PNG but not WebP.
  • Keeping transparent stickers, logos and UI assets transparent (JPG would add a background).
  • Extracting frames from animated WebP stickers, memes or loading spinners for editing or thumbnails.
  • Producing compact palette PNGs of icons and diagrams for documentation.

Is WebP to PNG really lossless?

Yes: PNG is a lossless format (W3C PNG Specification), and every pixel the WebP decodes to — red, green, blue and alpha — is stored in the PNG unchanged. If the WebP was lossy, the PNG contains exactly what that lossy WebP shows, including any compression artefacts; converting cannot add back detail that was removed when the WebP was made. From this point on, editing and re-saving the PNG adds no further loss.

PNG files are written with MySmartCoPilot’s optimising encoder, which picks the smallest exact layout (palette, greyscale or RGB, with or without alpha) for each image.

Animated WebP: one frame or every frame

An animated WebP stores frames that may cover only part of the picture and are drawn over the previous ones (RFC 9649 defines each frame’s position, whether it is blended or replaces what is below, and whether it is cleared afterwards). This converter builds every frame the way libwebp’s reference animation decoder does, so each PNG is the complete picture as shown at that moment — not a fragment. Every frame exports up to 2,000 frames per file, numbered in order.

When to choose an 8-bit palette PNG

  • Logos, icons, flat illustrations, charts and screenshots usually have few colours. A palette PNG stores each pixel as one byte (or less), which can make the file several times smaller. With 256 colours or fewer, the result is still exact.
  • Photos and gradients have thousands of colours; reducing them to 256 can cause banding. Dithering (on by default) hides most of it, but lossless PNG — or keeping the WebP — is the better choice for photos.

Colour profiles

If the WebP contains an embedded colour profile (for example Display P3 from a phone or design app), it is copied into the PNG, so colour-managed apps show the same colours. Without a profile, both files are treated as standard sRGB.

Limitations

  • Up to 100 files per batch, each up to 200 MB and 50 megapixels; up to 2,000 frames per animated file in “Every frame”.
  • Frames are exported as separate PNG files; the animation itself (timing, looping) is not kept in PNG.
  • EXIF and XMP metadata are not copied; an ICC colour profile is.
  • Very large or long animations need a lot of memory and time, because each frame is decoded and written separately.

Frequently asked questions

Will the PNG keep my transparent background?

Yes. PNG supports full transparency, so transparent and partly transparent pixels stay exactly as they are in the WebP.

Why is the PNG larger than the WebP?

WebP compresses better than PNG, and a lossy WebP is much smaller than any lossless format. For graphics with few colours, try 8-bit palette; for photos, a large PNG is normal.

How do I get all frames out of an animated WebP?

Choose Every frame under Animated WebP. Each animated file then becomes a ZIP of numbered PNGs (frame-01, frame-02, …), each showing the full picture at that point of the animation.

Can I convert PNG back to WebP?

Yes — use PNG to WebP. Its lossless mode is pixel-identical and usually smaller than the PNG.

Are my images uploaded?

No. The WebP decoder runs inside your browser, files are processed on your device, and nothing is sent to a server.
