1. Map
India’s states are not offered yet: they will be added with a boundary dataset that matches the Survey of India’s depiction.
2. Your table
A region column (names or codes) and a number column.
Or paste the table (from Excel, Google Sheets or a CSV)
3. Classes and colours
Separate them with spaces or semicolons (or commas, if you write decimals with a dot), without thousands separators; the highest value closes the last class.

Titles and labels
Click a region to choose it. The list below has every region, for the keyboard and for typing values.

About the Region Map Maker (Color States, Provinces & Counties of Any Country)
Choose a country and colour its first-level regions — the states of the US, Germany or Brazil, the provinces of China or Canada, the regions of France — or the 3,225 counties and county equivalents of the United States, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands. Paste a table of region names or codes with numbers, and the map colours itself by quantiles, equal steps, Jenks natural breaks or breaks you set, in colour-blind-safe viridis or a ColorBrewer scheme; or make a category map by clicking regions into groups you name.
Names are matched however your table writes them — “Bavaria”, “Bayern”, “BY” or “DE-BY”; “Los Angeles County, CA” or the five-digit FIPS code — with words like “State of” ignored and one typo forgiven, and every row that matched nothing is listed. The US states can also be shown as a hexagon tile map, where every state has the same size.
How to use it
- Choose the country (or United States — counties).
- For a value map, paste a table with a region column and a number column, then pick the classes and the colours. For a category map, choose Colour regions by group, name the groups and click the regions on the map, or pick their group in the region list.
- Check the report of rows that matched no region, and fix their names in your table or type the values in the region list.
- Add a title, a subtitle and a source line, and choose the labels.
- With a pass, download the map as PNG (up to 4× size), SVG or PDF, the region table as CSV, or copy a share link; without one the page shows a free preview of the map at preview size.
Examples
State Sales California 1200 TX 860 New York 640 …
The states coloured in five quantile classes of Sales, with a legend; states without a row in grey.
Germany · groups: North (Hamburg, Bremen, Niedersachsen …), South (Bayern, Baden-Württemberg)
A two-colour category map with a legend naming the groups.
FIPS Rate 06037 5.1 17031 4.8 …
Every county coloured by Jenks natural breaks of the rate, with state borders drawn on top.
Common uses
- Reports and slides: sales, members, cases or results by state, province or county.
- Territory and coverage maps for sales and service teams.
- Teaching and assignments: election results, census figures, survey answers by region.
- Checking a regional table quickly: a region with a missing or odd value stands out.
Classes and colours
- Quantiles put about the same number of regions in each class.
- Equal steps split the range from the lowest to the highest value into equal parts.
- Natural breaks (Jenks) choose the breaks that make each class as alike inside as possible (Fisher’s exact method, the smallest total of squared differences from each class’s mean).
- Your own breaks take the upper limits you type.
Viridis and cividis read in black and white and for the common kinds of colour blindness; the ColorBrewer schemes are sequential (light to dark), diverging (two colours around a middle) and qualitative (for groups). This product includes color specifications and designs developed by Cynthia Brewer (ColorBrewer, Apache License 2.0).
The outlines and India’s point of view
States and provinces come from Natural Earth (public domain), fitted to its India point-of-view edition: regions that lie wholly in territory India claims (Gilgit-Baltistan, Azad Kashmir and the Siachen unit) are not part of Pakistan’s map, and Xinjiang and Xizang are clipped to China’s outline in that edition, so no territory India claims is drawn inside another country. An India map is not offered yet: its states will be added once a boundary dataset matching the Survey of India’s depiction is available under a licence that allows it. US counties come from the US Census Bureau’s cartographic boundary files (a work of the US Government). Each map uses an equal-area projection — Albers for the United States and other large countries away from the equator, Lambert azimuthal about the country’s centre for the rest — so the regions of the main map keep their true sizes against each other. Alaska (drawn smaller), Hawaii, Puerto Rico and the insets of far-away parts each have a scale of their own.
Limitations
- First-level regions only (states, provinces, regions), plus US counties; districts and municipalities are not included.
- The US maps show the 50 states, DC, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands; American Samoa, Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands have no place on the composite map of the United States and are left out (American Samoa and the Northern Mariana Islands have maps of their own).
- Natural Earth’s regions follow its own sources: a country that has changed its regions recently may show the older ones.
- Outlines are simplified for a whole-country map; they are not for measuring areas or borders.
- The free preview shows the map at preview size with a watermark; the files and the share link need a pass.

Frequently asked questions
What do I get without a pass?
Without a pass, Region Map Maker (Color States, Provinces & Counties of Any Country) shows the coloured map at preview size (up to 640 pixels) with a watermark, and which rows of your table matched a region. Until you unlock it, the result can’t be downloaded or copied. A Pro, Premium or Ultimate pass, a one-time payment that never renews, unlocks the full result. The pricing page lists the passes and their prices.
Why is a region grey?
Your table has no value for it, or its row did not match. The report under the table lists every row that matched nothing; type the value in the region list or fix the name.
Can I map India’s states?
Not yet. India’s states will be added once a dataset that matches the Survey of India’s official depiction can be used here; until then the India map is not offered rather than drawn wrongly.
Which names and codes does it understand?
The region’s own name, English and local names, ISO 3166-2 codes (DE-BY, US-CA), postal abbreviations (CA, TX) and other common names; for counties the five-digit FIPS code and “Name County, ST”.
What is the hexagon tile map?
For the US states: every state as one hexagon of the same size, roughly where it is. Small states such as Rhode Island or Delaware get as much room as Texas, which suits per-state results.
Is my table uploaded?
No. It is matched and drawn in your browser; the page downloads only the outlines of the country you choose.
