Add query and page rows

Paste rows instead

A header row with a query (or keyword) column and a page (or URL) column, plus clicks and impressions or a position.

Compare with an earlier period

Add the same kind of rows for an earlier period to see new and resolved conflicts and the queries whose leading page changed.

Options

Separate terms with commas. Empty: your site’s name from its URLs. Branded queries are left out, because a home page and another page both showing for your name is normal.

Changing an option checks the same rows again.

Saved projects

Nothing saved yet. After an audit, “Save project” keeps its rows in this browser, so you can check again after your changes.

Search Console’s Performance export lists queries and pages in separate tables; this check needs the two together (see “Files it reads” below). Your files are read on this device and never uploaded.

About the Keyword Cannibalization Checker

Keyword cannibalization is two or more of your own pages showing for the same search, so neither gets the clicks one strong page would. This checker reads query and page rows from Search Console — or a rank tracker’s keyword and URL list — and finds every query where pages compete:

  • the split of impressions and clicks between the pages, their positions, and which one leads;
  • unstable queries, where Google switches from one page to the other from day to day or between two periods;
  • double listings in the top 3, which are usually good and need nothing;
  • the same page under several URL variants (www, http, a trailing slash, letter case, parameters).

Competing pages are grouped in pairs, each with a recommendation: keep one, merge the other into it, redirect it, or re-target it at its own searches — with the steps and a redirect list. Everything is read on your device.

How to use it

  1. Get rows with the query and the page together: from the Search Console API (with dimensions query and page; the Search Analytics for Sheets add-on gives them as a sheet), Looker Studio’s URL impression table, the bulk data export to BigQuery, a rank tracker’s keyword list with URLs, or one Performance export per page, filtered by page.
  2. Drop the files here (several at once), or paste rows copied from a sheet. No data at hand? Try a sample shows a made-up site with every kind of conflict.
  3. Check Options: the share of a query’s impressions a second page needs to count (10%), the impressions it needs (10), and your brand terms — branded searches are left out unless you include them.
  4. Start with Pairs of competing pages: each says which page to keep, what to do with the other and why, most at stake first. Conflicts by query shows every query with its pages and how the impressions split.
  5. Without a pass the audit is a free preview: every summary count in full and the first pairs and conflicts with their recommendations. With a Pro pass you see every row, and the CSV files, the redirect list, the Excel workbook, the PDF audit and Copy summary unlock.
  6. With a pass, paste the redirect list into the 301 Redirect Generator for .htaccess, Nginx or IIS rules. Keep the project in this browser with Save project to check again after your next export.

Examples

A guide competing with a calculator
Input
sip calculator: /tools/sip-calculator/ 70% of impressions, position 3.2 · /blog/sip-calculator-guide/ 30%, position 7.6
Result
Re-target: keep /tools/sip-calculator/. 55% of the guide’s impressions come from the queries it shares with the calculator — under the 60% at which a page is merged or redirected — and it has searches of its own (“what is sip”, “sip meaning”): point its title and links at those, and link from it to the calculator.
An old copy that still ranks
Input
home loan emi: /blog/home-loan-emi/ 62% of impressions, position 6.1, 230 clicks · /blog/home-loan-emi-old/ 38%, position 11.8, 24 clicks
Result
Redirect (301): the old copy gets almost all its impressions from the same queries and few clicks. Check that /blog/home-loan-emi/ covers it, then redirect /blog/home-loan-emi-old/ to it.
Two results in the top 3
Input
emi calculator: /tools/emi-calculator/ position 1.4 · /blog/emi-formula/ position 2.7
Result
No action: double listing. Google shows two of your pages at the top, which usually brings more clicks than one.

Common uses

  • Finding why a page that used to rank now swaps places with another page of the same site.
  • Cleaning up after years of blogging: old posts, updated copies and tag pages that compete with the article people should land on.
  • Planning a content merge or a migration, with the redirect list ready for the server.
  • Auditing a client’s site with every competing pair, its numbers and its recommendation, as a PDF or a spreadsheet.

Files it reads

  • Search Console API responses (searchanalytics.query with the query and page dimensions; also with date, device or country), as JSON or as a sheet: Query, Page, Clicks, Impressions, CTR, Position — the Search Analytics for Sheets add-on writes this sheet.
  • Looker Studio URL impression table (Query, Landing Page, Url Clicks, Impressions …).
  • Bulk data export to BigQuery (searchdata_url_impression: url, query, impressions, clicks, sum_position; anonymized queries are counted, not listed; Web results only when other search types are in the file).
  • Performance exports filtered to one page each: their Filters sheet names the page, so their queries become that page’s.
  • Rank trackers: a keyword, a URL and a position (Semrush, Ahrefs and similar exports, Ahrefs’ previous URL too).

CSV, TSV, Excel and JSON; UTF-8 or UTF-16; Indian and Western digit groups and decimal commas.

How conflicts are found

  • URLs that differ only in www, http or https, a trailing slash, letter case, an index file, tracking parameters or a #fragment are one page: they are counted together and listed under URL variants.
  • A query is a conflict when two or more pages each get at least 10% of its impressions and at least 10 impressions. Search Console counts one impression for each of your pages shown in a search when data is grouped by page (how impressions are counted), so the shares say how often each page was shown. In a rank tracker’s file, pages compete when both rank in the top 20.
  • Double listing: both pages average a top-3 position. Unstable: the page with the most clicks changes at least twice from day to day, the second page leading at least a fifth of the days, or another page led in the earlier period.
  • Priority: the impressions that went to pages other than the leading one, × 1.25 when unstable and × 0.1 for a double listing.

How keep, merge, redirect and re-target are decided

  • Keep the page with more clicks for the shared queries — unless it is the home page or a listing page (tag, category, page 2, site search) competing with a page made for the query; then the page made for the query is kept.
  • Redirect the other page when 60% or more of its own impressions come from these queries and it gets under a quarter of the kept page’s clicks; merge it first when it gets more. Google uses a permanent redirect as a signal that its target should be the canonical URL (redirects and Google Search).
  • Re-target it when most of its impressions come from other queries: it has an audience of its own, so its title, main heading and links move to those searches.
  • A home page or a listing page that competes links to the page made for the query instead. URL variants get one canonical URL (choosing a canonical URL); a #fragment needs nothing, because Google generally does not treat fragments as separate URLs.

Limitations

  • Search Console never lists rare queries, and the interface exports at most 1,000 rows: conflicts in those queries cannot be seen.
  • The checker works from numbers, not from your pages’ text: read both pages before you merge or redirect, and keep what only one of them says.
  • A rank tracker’s file has no impressions, so its shares follow the tracker’s traffic estimates, and pages compete by position alone.
  • Two pages that answer different needs can rank for one broad query without hurting each other: the recommendation says why, so you can judge.
  • Files up to 200 MB and up to 1,000,000 rows a sheet; daily rows beyond 250,000 pairs are combined over the days.

Frequently asked questions

What do I get without a pass?

Without a pass, Keyword Cannibalization Checker shows every summary count in full, and the first pairs of competing pages with what to do, conflicts and URL variants (up to 10 of each, never more than half). Until you unlock it, the result can’t be downloaded or copied. A Pro, Premium or Ultimate pass, a one-time payment that never renews, unlocks the full result. The pricing page lists the passes and their prices.

What is keyword cannibalization?

Two or more pages of one site competing for the same search. Google then shows one or the other, often lower than one strong page would rank, and the clicks split between them. It is a problem when the pages do the same job; two different pages for a broad query, or two results in the top 3, are often fine.

Can the Search Console Performance export show cannibalization?

Not by itself: it exports queries and pages in separate tables, so it never says which page got which query. Use the Search Console API (or a Sheets add-on that calls it), Looker Studio, the bulk data export, or one Performance export per page filtered by page — each gives query and page rows.

Should I merge, redirect or re-target?

Redirect a page that only repeats another; merge two pages that both get real clicks for the same searches; re-target a page that has searches of its own, so each page has a job. The checker decides from how much of each page’s traffic the shared queries are, and says why.

Is a double listing a problem?

Usually not. When two of your pages hold the top three places for a search, you get more of the clicks than with one result. The checker lists them so you can watch them, and recommends no action.

What does “unstable” mean?

Google keeps switching which of your pages it shows for the query: from day to day in daily rows, or between the two periods you compared. That usually means the pages look alike to it; making one clearly the page for that search often steadies the ranking.

Are my files uploaded?

No. Everything is read and checked by this page on your device; the audit exists only in this tab unless you save the project in this browser.
