About the Finland Daily Allowances for Parents Calculator
Work out the daily allowances Kela pays to parents in Finland: the pregnancy allowance (raskausraha) and the parental allowance (vanhempainraha). Both follow your annual income: wage income less a deduction of 9,07 % for the insurance contributions, plus any YEL or MYEL work income. Kela's formula pays 70% of the daily income up to the first income limit and less above it, at least 31,99 € a working day, and 90% for the pregnancy allowance and the first 16 days of each parent's parental allowance (Kela; Kela: vuositulo).
Enter your wage income for the 12 months Kela looks at (or the annual income as Kela counts it), whether you are the birthing parent, and the days you plan to take. The calculator shows the daily amount, the increased amount, the amount for 25 working days (Kela's payment period, about a month) and the total, with the band of the formula you fall in. Nothing you type leaves your browser.
Without a pass, the free preview shows your daily parental allowance in full, with the first rows of the table and the first step of the working; a Pro pass unlocks every figure: the increased amount, the monthly amounts, the totals and the summary to copy, download or print.
How to use it
- Enter your gross wage income of the 12 calendar months before the month before your leave starts, holiday pay included, and any YEL or MYEL work income; or switch to the annual income as Kela counts it.
- Say whether you are the birthing parent (who also gets the 40 days of pregnancy allowance) and how many days of parental allowance you plan to take.
- Read the daily parental allowance, the increased amount for the first days, the amount for 25 working days and the total.
- With a Pro pass, or after unlocking this result, use Copy summary, Download CSV or Print; without one the page shows a free preview.
Examples
66,04 € a working day: 31 125 € less 9,07 % gives an annual income of 28 301,96 €, and 70% of it ÷ 300.
46,67 € a working day: YEL income gets no deduction.
118,49 € a working day: the annual income of 54 558,00 € is in the second band, where 40% is added above 45 744 €.
156,71 € a working day after the first 16, and 233,40 € for those.
31,99 € a working day: the minimum.
The annual income Kela uses
Kela looks at the 12 calendar months before the month before your allowance starts: for a leave starting in October, September is skipped and the 12 months before it count. Wage income and holiday pay count less 9,07 %, the deduction for the daily allowance contribution, the employee's pension contribution and the unemployment insurance contribution; YEL and MYEL work income counts in full (Kela: vuositulo; Health Insurance Act, chapter 11). If you have just finished your studies or been on childcare leave, Kela can use the last 3 months instead, on request; and if your new baby is due before your previous child turns 3, the income used for that child can be used again.
Kela’s formula
- Up to 13 712 € a year: the minimum, 31,99 € a working day.
- Up to 45 744 €: 0,7 × the annual income ÷ 300.
- Up to 70 379 €: 106,74 € + 0,4 × (income − 45 744 €) ÷ 300.
- Above: 139,58 € + 0,25 × (income − 70 379 €) ÷ 300.
- Increased (pregnancy allowance and each parent's first 16 days): 0,9 × income ÷ 300 up to 70 379 €, then 211,14 € + 0,325 × (income − 70 379 €) ÷ 300, with the same minimum (Kela).
The days
The birthing parent gets pregnancy allowance for 40 working days, starting 14 to 30 working days before the due date (Kela). Parental allowance is paid for 160 working days to each parent, 320 for the child, all of them to a single parent; a parent can turn over up to 63 of their days to the other, and the parents can take up to 18 days at the same time. Days are Monday to Saturday except mid-week public holidays; a day of partial parental allowance pays half and uses half a day.
Limitations
- An estimate from Kela’s formula, not a Kela decision. MySmartCoPilot is an independent site, not affiliated with Kela.
- Income from benefits (for example unemployment benefit) counts in a way of its own; if you had some, enter the annual income from Kela’s decision or calculator instead.
- Multiple births, a premature birth, adoption and special pregnancy allowance change the days, not the daily amount; their extra days are not worked out here.
- The formula is the one for the current year; Kela updates its limits every year.
