About the EV Efficiency Converter
Electric-car efficiency is quoted in six ways: energy use per distance (kWh/100 km, Wh/km, kWh/100 mi), distance per unit of energy (km/kWh, mi/kWh) and the US label’s MPGe. Enter any one of them to see all six, plus the range on a full charge of your usable battery capacity, in kilometres and in miles. MPGe uses the US EPA’s 33.705 kWh per gallon of gasoline equivalent.
The free preview shows the result rows with the values hidden; a Pro pass shows every value, with copy and text or JSON downloads.
How to use it
- Enter your car’s energy use or efficiency and choose its unit.
- Enter the usable battery capacity in kWh, which is usually a little less than the gross capacity.
- Select Convert to see all six units and the range.
- With a Pro pass, copy the working or download it as text or JSON.
Formulas
kWh/100 km = 100 ÷ (km/kWh); Wh/km = 10 × kWh/100 km; a mile is exactly 1.609344 km; MPGe = 33.705 ÷ (kWh per mile), using 33.705 kWh per US gallon equivalent (US EPA: the fuel economy and environment label). Range = usable battery energy ÷ energy use per kilometre.
Limitations
- The range is arithmetic on the numbers you enter: speed, temperature, terrain, heating and cooling and charging losses change the real range.
- MPGe uses the US gallon; the UK gallon is not used.

Frequently asked questions
What do I get without a pass?
Without a pass, EV Efficiency Converter shows the rules, dates and checks that apply to your figures, with every computed amount hidden. Until you unlock it, the result can’t be downloaded or copied. A Pro, Premium or Ultimate pass, a one-time payment that never renews, unlocks the full result. The pricing page lists the passes and their prices.
Why does my real range differ from the result?
The result divides the battery energy you entered by the energy use you entered. Real energy use changes with speed, temperature, terrain and heating or cooling, so the range does too.
Should I enter the gross or the usable battery capacity?
The usable capacity: the energy the car lets you draw, which is usually a little less than the gross figure in its specification.
