About the Document to Text Converter

Choose a Word (.docx), OpenDocument (.odt, .odp), RTF, PowerPoint (.pptx), web page (.html) or DRM-free EPUB file and get its text back as Markdown or plain text — with the structure kept: headings stay headings, bulleted and numbered lists keep their nesting, tables become Markdown tables (or tab-separated lines in plain text), links and bold or italic text are kept in Markdown, and footnotes are collected at the end.

Slides come out one heading per slide, with their bullets, tables and (if you want) speaker notes; e-books chapter by chapter in reading order; web pages without their menus and footers. Everything is read in your browser — the file is never uploaded — and the result can be copied or downloaded as a .md or .txt file. E-books with DRM are refused, because their chapters are encrypted.

How to use it

  1. Choose or drop a file: .docx, .odt, .odp, .rtf, .pptx, .html or .epub, up to 100 MB. Nothing is uploaded.
  2. Pick Markdown (headings with #, lists with - and 1., tables with |) or Plain text (paragraphs separated by blank lines, list markers such as • and 1.).
  3. Choose what happens to images — left out, or replaced by their alt text — and, for slides, whether the speaker notes are included.
  4. Read the result in the box; the line under it counts the words, lines and headings.
  5. Copy it, or Download it as a .md or .txt file named after your document.

Common uses

  • Moving a Word or OpenDocument file into a Markdown wiki, a static site, GitHub or a notes app.
  • Getting the text of a slide deck for meeting notes, a script or a translation.
  • Pasting the text of an e-book or a saved web page into another tool — a summariser, a word counter, a translator.
  • Feeding documents to an AI model or a search index as clean text, without the formatting clutter.

What is kept for each format

  • DOCX (ECMA-376 Office Open XML) — read with mammoth: headings (Heading 1–6 and Title styles), lists, tables, links, bold and italic, footnotes and endnotes.
  • ODT (OpenDocument) — headings by outline level and Title/Heading styles, lists with their numbering style, tables, links, bold and italic, text boxes and footnotes; tracked deletions and comments are left out.
  • RTF — headings from the style sheet or outline level, list markers, tables, links, bold and italic, footnotes; hidden text, headers and footers are left out.
  • PPTX and ODP — one heading per slide with its title, bullets with their indent levels, numbered lists, tables, SmartArt text and (optionally) speaker notes; hidden slides are marked “(hidden)”.
  • HTML — the visible content; scripts, styles and forms are removed, and menus, headers, footers and sidebars are left out unless you untick Main content only.
  • EPUB (W3C EPUB 3.3, and EPUB 2) — the chapters in the reading order of the book’s spine.

E-books with DRM

An EPUB with DRM (Adobe, Readium LCP or Apple FairPlay) has encrypted chapters, so there is no text to read, and this tool does not try to remove the protection. EPUBs whose only encryption is font obfuscation — allowed in DRM-free books to protect embedded fonts — convert normally. Many publishers, libraries and public-domain sites offer DRM-free EPUBs.

The Markdown

The output is GitHub-flavoured Markdown, written by the same converter as MySmartCoPilot’s HTML to Markdown tool: # headings, - bullets, 1. numbers, | tables (complex tables with merged cells stay as HTML), italic, bold and links. A line break inside a paragraph is written as a backslash at the end of the line, which editors do not strip. Footnote marks appear as superscript numbers, with the notes under a “Notes” heading at the end.

Limitations

  • Scanned documents contain pictures of text, not text: run them through OCR PDF or Image to Text first.
  • Old binary Office files (.doc, .ppt) are not read: save them as .docx or .pptx first. PDFs have their own tools: PDF to Text and PDF to Markdown.
  • Images are not embedded in the output (only their alt text, if you choose). Equations, charts, comments and page layout such as columns are not converted.
  • Slide text follows the order of the shapes in the file, which is usually but not always the reading order on the slide.

Privacy

Everything happens in your browser. What you enter or open here is not uploaded or stored by MySmartCoPilot. The converters (for ZIP, Word and Markdown) are downloaded from MySmartCoPilot the first time you convert a file; your documents never leave your device.

Frequently asked questions

Is my document uploaded?

No. The file is read and converted in your browser; only the converter code is downloaded from MySmartCoPilot, once. After that the page works offline too.

Should I choose Markdown or plain text?

Markdown keeps the structure in a way other apps understand: headings, lists, tables, bold, italic and links. Choose it for wikis, GitHub, static sites and notes apps. Plain text has no markup at all — paragraphs separated by blank lines and simple list markers — for pasting into e-mails, forms or text tools.

Why is my EPUB refused?

It has DRM: its chapters are encrypted for one reading app, so they cannot be read here. Use a DRM-free copy of the book.

Can I convert a .doc or .ppt file?

Not directly. Open it in Word, PowerPoint, LibreOffice or Google Docs, save it as .docx or .pptx (or .odt / .odp), then convert that file.

Are tables kept?

Yes. In Markdown, simple tables become pipe tables and tables with merged cells are kept as HTML; in plain text every row is a line with the cells separated by tabs, so it pastes straight into a spreadsheet.

What about headers, footers and page numbers?

They are left out, as are slide numbers and footers in presentations, so the output contains just the content of the document.
