About the Car & Bike Insurance Renewal Comparison (India)

A renewal notice from your insurer and a cheaper quote online rarely cover the same thing. One insures the vehicle for a lower IDV, another applies less No Claim Bonus than you have earned, drops engine protect or slips in a voluntary deductible. This comparison puts up to six car or two-wheeler quotes side by side — IDV, own-damage and third-party premium, NCB, add-ons, what you pay of each claim and the total with 18% GST — and says in plain words what changes in cover if you switch.

Type the figures in, paste the premium table of a quote, a renewal e-mail or a quote copied from a website, or open a quote PDF: the page reads the lines on your device and shows what it found, so you can check it. The renewal report then checks each quote's IDV against the depreciation schedule, the bonus you are due, the own-damage rate on the IDV and the price of every add-on, and works out what each quote pays — and what you pay — on the same four claims: a bumper scrape, a front-end accident, a flooded engine and a total loss or theft. Nothing is ranked: every quote is shown beside your first.

Without a pass the free preview shows the comparison of your first two quotes in full, with its checks, and the renewal report with its figures hidden; the report's figures, quotes three to six, the PDF report, the CSV and Copy summary come with a Pro pass. Nothing you type or open leaves your browser. An estimate from the quotes as entered, not insurance advice: the policy wording and the insurer decide.

    How to use it

    1. Enter your vehicle: car or two-wheeler, the engine size, the first registration and the start of the new policy. Add today’s ex-showroom price of the same model to check each IDV, and the No Claim Bonus on the policy that is ending.
    2. Add each quote: type its figures, or press Read a quote to paste its premium table, the renewal e-mail or the quote page, or to open its PDF, then check what was read.
    3. Read Your quotes side by side and What changes in cover: the premium difference, the IDV, the bonus, the add-ons and the deductibles against your first quote.
    4. Open the Renewal report for the IDV and bonus checks, the add-on prices and what each quote pays on the same four claims. With a pass, or after unlocking this report, download the PDF or the CSV, or copy the summary.

    Examples

A renewal notice against a cheaper online quote (the example on the page)
    Input
A 1.2-litre hatchback, 3 years 7 months old, ex-showroom ₹7,20,000 · renewal notice ₹16,317 (IDV ₹4,32,000, 45% NCB, zero dep, engine protect, roadside assistance, consumables) · online quote ₹12,897 (IDV ₹3,94,000, 35% NCB, zero dep, ₹2,500 voluntary deductible)
    Result
The online quote is ₹3,420 cheaper, but insures the car for ₹38,000 less, applies 35% NCB where 45% is due, drops engine protect, roadside assistance and consumables, allows one zero-dep claim instead of two and makes you pay the first ₹3,500 of each claim.

On the same ₹65,500 front-end accident you would pay ₹2,250 with the renewal notice and ₹7,250 with the online quote; with a flooded engine (₹1,41,000) the online quote pays nothing. Ask the online insurer for the 45% bonus first: your renewal notice is the proof.

    A quote read from a renewal e-mail
    Input
“Renewal premium: Rs. 16,317/- (inclusive of GST). IDV: Rs.4,32,000/-. NCB: 45%. Add-ons: Zero Dep, Engine Protect, RSA.”
    Result
Read as: total ₹16,317 with GST, IDV ₹4,32,000, NCB 45%, zero depreciation, engine protect and roadside assistance — the premium lines are left for you to add from the notice.

    Common uses

    • Check your insurer’s renewal notice against an online or agent’s quote before you pay.
    • See whether a cheaper quote keeps the IDV, the bonus and the add-ons you have now.
    • Decide whether zero depreciation, engine protect or return to invoice is worth its price for your vehicle.
    • Spot a No Claim Bonus left out or a total that does not add up, and ask the insurer before paying.

    How the quotes are compared

    • Total payable = (own damage after the NCB + third party + owner-driver personal accident + other covers + add-ons) × 1.18, or the total as quoted. A quoted total that does not add up is flagged: every add-on’s premium must be shown separately in the quote’s premium computation table (IRDAI master circular).
    • Own damage before the NCB = own damage after the NCB ÷ (1 − NCB %), and the own-damage rate = that ÷ IDV: quotes on different IDVs and bonuses become comparable.
    • You pay of each claim = the compulsory deductible + the voluntary deductible you chose.
    • Claims: the same garage estimates for every quote (scaled to your vehicle), depreciation on parts as the India Motor Tariff GR.9 sets it, the quote’s add-ons and deductibles, and the bonus a claim costs at the next renewal — the engine of the site’s Car & Bike Insurance Claim Calculator.
    • The year with one claim = the premium + what you pay of a front-end accident + the bonus it costs you.

IDV: the value your vehicle is insured for

The IDV is the sum insured, fixed at the start of each policy: the manufacturer’s listed selling price of the model less depreciation by age — 5% up to 6 months, 15% up to 1 year, 20% up to 2 years, 30% up to 3, 40% up to 4 and 50% up to 5 years; beyond five years, and for discontinued models, it is agreed between you and the insurer (car CIS, two-wheeler CIS). A total loss or theft pays the IDV (less the deductibles), and repairs costing more than 75% of the IDV make the vehicle a constructive total loss. Each insurer now publishes its own IDV basis in its Customer Information Sheet, so a quote can differ from the schedule: a lower IDV is a lower premium and a lower payout.

No Claim Bonus: what you have earned

    • The bonus is a discount on the own-damage premium only: 20% after one claim-free year, 25% after two, 35% after three, 45% after four and 50% after five (India Motor Tariff, GR.27).
    • It belongs to you, not the vehicle or the insurer: a new insurer may allow the same bonus on the previous insurer’s renewal notice or a letter confirming it.
    • An own-damage claim resets it to nil at the next renewal; an NCB protection add-on keeps the next slab.
    • It is lost when the policy is not renewed within 90 days of its expiry — except when the vehicle was sold and not replaced, whose bonus can be used on a new insurance within three years.

    Add-ons in plain words

As the Customer Information Sheets describe them (car CIS):

    • Zero (nil) depreciation: no depreciation on replaced parts — tyres, tubes, rubber and plastic included — for the number of claims in the schedule.
    • Engine protect: damage to the engine, gearbox and differential from water getting in or oil leaking.
    • Roadside assistance: breakdown help, towing, a flat tyre, a battery jump-start, fuel delivery.
    • Consumables: nuts, bolts, clips, engine oil, coolant, AC gas and filters replaced after an accident.
    • Return to invoice: the on-road price for a total loss or theft, instead of the IDV.
    • NCB protection, key protect, tyre protect, personal belongings and, for electric vehicles, battery protect cover what their names say, up to their limits.

    Third-party, personal accident and GST

The third-party section of the standard private car policy covers death or injury of others without limit and damage to their property up to ₹7.5 lakh, and the owner-driver personal accident cover pays up to ₹15 lakh (car CIS). A policy without own-damage cover leaves damage to your own vehicle unpaid (IRDAI). GST on a private car or two-wheeler policy is 18%, the standard rate: only individual life and health policies were exempted (GST Council).

    Limitations

    • The IDV schedule and the bonus table are those of the India Motor Tariff that the standard policies still print; each insurer’s own IDV basis is in its Customer Information Sheet.
    • Claim figures are estimates on example garage bills scaled to your vehicle: the surveyor’s assessment and the policy wording decide.
    • Quotes are read from their text as written. Check every value the page found; a scanned PDF without a text layer cannot be read, so type its figures in.
    • It does not fetch prices from insurers or aggregators, and it does not rank insurers or recommend one.

    Frequently asked questions

What do I get without a pass?

Without a pass, Car & Bike Insurance Renewal Comparison (India) shows the side-by-side comparison of your first two quotes in full, with its checks; the renewal report’s figures and quotes three to six stay hidden. Until you unlock it, the result can’t be downloaded or copied. A Pro, Premium or Ultimate pass, a one-time payment that never renews, unlocks the full result. The pricing page lists the passes and their prices.

Is the cheaper renewal quote the better one?

Not by its price alone. Check that it has the same IDV, applies the No Claim Bonus you have earned, keeps the add-ons you rely on and adds no voluntary deductible. The renewal report works out what each quote pays on the same claims, so you can see what the lower premium gives up.

How is my car’s IDV worked out?

From the manufacturer’s listed price of the model less depreciation by age: 5% up to 6 months, 15% up to a year, then 20%, 30%, 40% and 50% up to five years. Beyond five years the insurer and you agree it. Each insurer publishes its own basis in its Customer Information Sheet.

Why does a new insurer’s quote show less No Claim Bonus?

Often because it has not seen your record. The bonus is yours: show the previous insurer’s renewal notice or a letter confirming it. It is lost after an own-damage claim (unless you had NCB protection) and when the policy is renewed more than 90 days after it expired.

Is zero depreciation worth paying for?

Without it, a claim deducts 50% on rubber, plastic, tyres and batteries, 30% on fibreglass and up to 50% on metal parts by the vehicle’s age. With it, replaced parts are paid in full for the number of claims allowed. The report shows the difference on a bumper scrape and a front-end accident for your quotes.

Does this page get quotes from insurers?

No. You type, paste or open the quotes you already have; nothing is sent to an insurer, an aggregator or anyone else.
