About Petal Lantern: Chainburst

Morning on the Windward Isles: green islands drift above a sea of cloud, a windmill turns on one of them, and a line of bunting snaps across the top of the sky. The regatta is about to start, and the balloons are ready. Six kinds float in six colours and six shapes: round, pennant, box, kite, hexagon and star, each stitched in its own panels with a petal sewn on the front. Swap two neighbours to line up three or more, and they pop.

At the foot of some columns stands a mooring hoop on a white post, and each hoop wants one colour. Clear that colour in its own column to fill the hoop; a full hoop fills with sunlight and flies its pennant. A clever swap can fill two or three hoops at once, because the balloons that drift down after a clear can clear again on their own.

That drifting-and-clearing is a chain, and chains are how every board is won. Each board names the depth of cascade it wants, how many times, and a score to reach. A cascade three deep sends a breeze of petals across the sky. Four deep or more raises the Petal Gale: petals stream over the isles, the windmill spins up, the bunting cracks and a rainbow draws itself. Clear the board and the whole regatta sails by on fair winds.

The music is a light folk reel on ukulele, marimba and accordion, with a whistle that joins as your chains grow. Every board can be won: it is built together with a player that solves it first, and a hint is one press away. Settings offers more moves, or none at all, and a switch for the gale. How to play

  1. Drag a balloon toward a neighbour, or tap one balloon and then the next. Arrow keys and Enter or Space also work.
  2. Line up three or more of a colour to pop them. New balloons drift down after every clear.
  3. Each mooring hoop wants one colour. Clear that colour in its column until the count is full and the hoop lights up.
  4. Cascades are chains. Meet the chain targets of the board, the depth and the number of times, then reach the score.
  5. Press H or the Hint button for a move that works. Press P, Escape or Start to pause.

Controls

  • Drag a tile, or tap two tiles — swap

Frequently asked questions

What counts as a chain?

When balloons clear and the new ones that drift into place line up by themselves, that is a second link. Each extra link is one level deeper, and the board tells you the depth it wants.

How do the mooring hoops work?

A hoop wants one colour. Every balloon of that colour you clear in the hoop’s own column fills it a little. When the count is full the hoop fills with sunlight and flies its pennant. Several hoops can fill on the same move.

What is the Petal Gale?

A cascade four deep or more raises a gale: petals stream across the sky, the windmill spins and a rainbow appears. Clearing a board sends the regatta of balloons sailing by. You can switch the gale off in Settings.
