Worked example: one point in New Delhi in five coordinate formats

A surveyor has the decimal coordinates 28.6139, 77.2090 for a point in New Delhi and needs it in other formats for a report and a map.

  1. In degrees, minutes and seconds, 0.6139° is 36.834′, which is 36′ 50.04″, so the point is 28°36′50.04″N 77°12′32.40″E.

  2. In degrees and decimal minutes it is 28°36.8340′N 77°12.5400′E.

  3. In UTM it lies in zone 43R, at an easting of 715980 and a northing of 3167205 metres.

  4. The same spot is 43RGM1598067204 as an MGRS grid reference and 7JWVJ675+HJ as a Plus Code, which map apps accept in place of an address.

Questions

Which coordinate format should I use?

Decimal degrees for most apps and spreadsheets, degrees, minutes and seconds for some forms, and UTM or MGRS where distances in metres matter, as in surveying.

How accurate is measuring area on a map?

As accurate as the points you place and the map beneath them; for a legal boundary, a licensed survey decides, but a map measure is close enough to compare plots or plan fencing.

Why does the on-screen ruler need calibrating?

Screens differ in pixel density, so the same number of pixels is a different length on each; calibrating it once for your display makes the ruler true to life.

Why does the compass reading jump around?

It reads your phone’s magnetic sensor, which metal objects, magnets and nearby electronics disturb; hold the phone flat and away from them for a steady reading.
