About the PIN Code Finder (India Post)
Type a six-digit PIN code to see every post office that uses it — head, sub and branch offices, and which of them deliver mail — with the district, state, postal circle, region and division. Type the start of a PIN to list the codes that begin with it, or a post office, area or district name to find its PIN code. Results can be copied or downloaded as CSV for address lists.
The data is the Department of Posts’ All India Pincode Directory, published on the Open Government Data Platform (data.gov.in) under the Government Open Data License – India: 1,65,601 post offices and 19,586 PIN codes in the copy used here. It is downloaded from this site — about 1.1 MB in all, kept by your browser so it also works offline — and searched in your browser, so nothing you type is sent anywhere.

How a PIN code is built
The Postal Index Number was introduced in India on 15 August 1972. Each PIN has six digits: the first digit is the zone, the second and third the sub-zone and sorting district, the fourth the route on which the sorting office lies, and the fifth and sixth the delivery post office (India Post, Tamil Nadu Circle — archived page). So the first three digits together identify the sorting district.
Zones 1 to 8 are geographical — 1 covers Delhi, Haryana, Punjab, Chandigarh, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir (and Ladakh, formed from it); 4 covers Maharashtra, Goa, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh; 6 covers Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Puducherry and Lakshadweep, and so on. In the directory, PIN codes starting with 9 belong to the Army Postal Service. When you look up a PIN, the tool names its zone.
Head, sub and branch post offices
- HO — head post office: a large post office to which sub post offices report.
- SO — sub post office: a post office that reports to a head office.
- BO — branch post office: a small office, mostly in rural areas, that reports to a sub or head office.
A delivery office delivers mail to the addresses in its area; a non-delivery office offers counter services only, and mail for its area is delivered by a delivery office. Several post offices often share one PIN code.
About the data
The All India Pincode Directory is published by the Department of Posts on data.gov.in. The copy used here is the set of records that the directory’s data.gov.in web service returned, as saved by the open-source pincode-india extraction script; it has not been compared record by record with a download from data.gov.in itself, so if a result looks wrong, check it with India Post. Post offices opened, closed or renamed after that copy was made are not included. The directory’s map coordinates are not shown, because many are missing or misplaced. For 714 offices — 602 of them branch offices — the directory gives no district or state; where other offices share the PIN code, the PIN still shows their district.
Limitations
- The directory is a copy, so recent changes are missing. India Post’s own search on indiapost.gov.in has the latest list.
- A PIN code identifies a delivery area, not an exact address; it can span parts of more than one locality.
- Names are as India Post lists them (for example "Andheri East S.O"), so try different spellings if a search finds nothing.
- Map locations of post offices are not available.
Privacy
Everything happens in your browser. What you enter or open here is not uploaded or stored by MySmartCoPilot. Downloads India Post’s directory from this site (about 1.1 MB in all) and keeps it, so searches also work offline afterwards. What you type is matched on your device and never sent.
Frequently asked questions
How do I find the PIN code of my area?
Type your area, village or post office name, and pick your state to narrow the results. The matching post offices are listed with their PIN codes. If your area has no post office of its own, search for the nearest one or the town, or open the district to see all its PIN codes.
What do the six digits of a PIN code mean?
The first digit is the postal zone, the second and third the sub-zone and sorting district, the fourth the route of the sorting office, and the last two the delivery post office.
Can two post offices have the same PIN code?
Yes — often. A PIN code belongs to a delivery area, and several head, sub and branch offices can share it. For example, 400001 is shared by Mumbai GPO and several sub offices in south Mumbai.
What is the difference between a delivery and a non-delivery post office?
A delivery office has postmen who deliver mail to addresses; a non-delivery office only offers counter services such as speed post, savings and money orders, and mail for its area is delivered by another office with the same PIN.
Is a PIN code the same as a ZIP code?
It does the same job: PIN is India’s postal code. International forms that ask for a ZIP or postal code accept the six-digit PIN.
