About the Animated WebP ⇄ GIF Converter
Animated WebP files — stickers, reactions and clips saved from websites and chat apps — do not play everywhere: many editors, older apps and email programs show only the first frame or nothing. This converter turns them into animated GIFs that play anywhere, frame by frame, with each frame’s own timing and the same number of plays. It also goes the other way: GIF and APNG to animated WebP, usually a fraction of the size.
GIF has two limits the converter works around for you: at most 256 colours per frame (each frame gets its own palette, with optional dithering for gradients) and only on-or-off transparency — soft, semi-transparent edges are cut at a threshold you set or blended with an edge colour that matches the background the GIF will be shown on. Everything runs in your browser; nothing is uploaded.
How to use it
- Drop animated WebP, GIF or APNG files on the box (several at once are fine).
- Check Convert to: WebP files are set to GIF, GIF and APNG to WebP — switch if you want the other way.
- For GIF, choose the colours and how to handle transparency; for WebP, the quality or lossless. Optionally make it smaller with Longest side, or change how often it plays.
- Select Convert, compare the original and the result side by side, then Download each file or all of them as a ZIP.
Examples
sticker.webp · 512 × 512 · 24 frames · 80 ms each · loops forever · Convert to GIF · edge colour white
sticker.gif · 512 × 512 · 24 frames of 0.08 s · loops forever; the sticker’s soft outline blended into white, so it looks clean on a white page.
demo.gif · 800 × 450 · 150 frames · quality 80
demo.webp with the same frame delays; the size change is shown next to the file (screen recordings with still backgrounds usually shrink the most).
confetti.apng · plays 3 times · Convert to GIF · Plays: Same as the original
confetti.gif with a loop count of 2 (GIF counts the repeats after the first play), so it also plays three times.
Common uses
- Using a WhatsApp or website sticker (animated WebP) where only GIF works: Slack, email, older forums, presentation software.
- Shrinking GIFs for a website by converting them to animated WebP, which current browsers play.
- Turning APNG animations into GIF for apps that do not play APNG.
Timing and looping
GIF stores delays in hundredths of a second, WebP and APNG in milliseconds, so each frame keeps its time to the nearest 0.01 s. Two browser rules are followed: a frame of 10 ms or less is shown for 100 ms, and a GIF delay of 0 or 0.01 s is shown as 0.1 s too — so frames shorter than 20 ms are saved as 20 ms, the fastest a GIF really plays. The number of plays carries over: WebP and APNG count plays (0 = forever), while a GIF’s NETSCAPE2.0 loop count counts the repeats after the first play, and a GIF without it plays once; the converter translates between them. Formats: RFC 9649 (WebP), the GIF89a specification and the APNG chunks in the W3C PNG specification.
Colours and transparency in GIF
- Colours: each frame gets the best 256 colours for that frame (or one palette for all frames, which avoids colour flicker). Dithering mixes colours in a fine pattern to smooth gradients and photos, at the cost of a larger file.
- Transparency: GIF pixels are either invisible or solid. Pixels more transparent than Transparent below disappear; the rest become solid. With Blend soft edges with a colour, partly transparent edge pixels are mixed with that colour first, so on a background of that colour the edges look smooth instead of jagged.
- Fill with a colour lays every frame on a solid background — no transparency at all.
How the WebP is built
Each frame is compared with the one before and only the rectangle that changed is encoded (with libwebp, lossy or lossless), so still backgrounds cost nothing; frames that change nothing are merged into the one before. GIF and APNG frames are first composited exactly as browsers show them — with their disposal and blending — so the WebP looks the same as the original. Google’s own measurements found animated GIFs converted to lossy WebP 64 % smaller on average, and to lossless WebP 19 % smaller (WebP FAQ); your results depend on the animation.
Limitations
- Up to 2,000 frames per animation and 50 files at a time; a GIF can hold about 120 million pixels in total (frames × width × height) here — use Longest side for bigger animations.
- Converting to GIF reduces colours to 256 per frame and makes soft edges hard; these are limits of the GIF format.
- Animated AVIF, video files (MP4, WebM) and Lottie/TGS stickers are not converted — use the Video to GIF tool for video.
- Frame times are kept to the nearest 0.01 s in GIF.

Frequently asked questions
How do I convert an animated WebP to GIF?
Drop the .webp file on the box; Convert to is set to GIF. Select Convert, check the result next to the original, and select Download GIF.
Why does my converted GIF have jagged edges?
GIF has no partial transparency. Tick Blend soft edges with a colour and choose the colour of the background the GIF will be shown on (white for most web pages and documents); the edges then look smooth there.
Why is the GIF so much bigger than the WebP?
GIF compression is decades older and far less efficient, and each frame can only use 256 colours. Make it smaller with Longest side, fewer Colours, or no dithering — or keep WebP where it is supported.
Will the animation loop the same way?
Yes. The number of plays is translated between the formats (GIF counts repeats, WebP and APNG count plays), so a sticker that loops forever still loops forever. Choose Plays to change it.
Are my files uploaded?
No. Frames are decoded, converted and encoded in your browser. The WebP codec (libwebp, WebAssembly) is loaded from this site the first time it is needed, and the page works offline afterwards.
