About the Video Frame Extractor

Save the exact frame you want from a video as a picture, at the size the video really has. Step through the video one frame at a time, jump by seconds or type a time, and pick the frame to keep as PNG (lossless), JPG or WebP. A screenshot of a player is scaled to your screen and often blurred by playback; this tool decodes the frame itself, upright for portrait phone videos and at the right shape for videos stored with non-square pixels.

For many frames at once it saves one frame every few seconds, a number of frames spread over the video, every key frame or every frame of a part as a ZIP (or straight into a folder in Chrome and Edge on a computer). It also makes a contact sheet — a grid of frames with their times, for an overview of a whole video — and scrub-preview thumbnails: sprite sheets plus the WebVTT file that web players read to show a picture while someone drags the progress bar.

Everything happens in your browser: the video is never uploaded.

The free preview on this page shows each frame and contact sheet at preview size (up to 640 pixels, and never more than half the frame’s size) with a MySmartCoPilot watermark, a ZIP as its list of files with the first frames (up to 3), and the first lines of a thumbnail track. With a Pro pass, or after unlocking one result, you get it in full.

How to use it

  1. Drop a video on the box or click Choose a video (MP4, MOV, MKV, WebM and more). The first frame appears, and the page reads the time of every frame so each step lands on a real frame.
  2. Find the moment: drag the slider, type a time in Go to, or use the buttons — or the arrow keys on the slider: ←/→ one frame, Shift + ←/→ one second, Page Up/Page Down ten seconds.
  3. Choose PNG, JPG or WebP, the quality and the size, then press Download frame or Copy image — with a Pro pass, or after unlocking that frame.
  4. For many frames, open Many frames: choose a frame every N seconds, N frames spread evenly, every key frame or every frame, optionally a part of the video (From and To), and press Make ZIP. Without a pass you see the free preview — the list of files and the first frames — and Save to a folder needs a pass or an unlocked result.
  5. For an overview or a web player, choose Contact sheet or Scrub thumbnails and set the grid. The free preview shows the sheet (or the first sheets and the first lines of the .vtt file) marked; with a pass, or once the result is unlocked, Download gives the picture, or the sprite sheets and the .vtt file as one ZIP.

Why a saved frame is sharper than a screenshot

A video file stores each frame at its own resolution. A screenshot of a player captures the player at the size it has on your screen — scaled, sometimes with controls over it and with the browser’s playback smoothing. This tool decodes the frame from the file and draws it at its display size: the stored width and height, turned upright when the file says it was filmed in portrait, and widened or narrowed when the video uses non-square pixels (as DVDs and some camcorders do), so circles stay round.

PNG keeps every decoded pixel exactly. JPG and WebP are much smaller; at quality 90 the difference is hard to see.

Frames, key frames and variable frame rates

Each frame has a start time. When you type a time, the page shows the frame that is on screen at that moment — the last one that starts at or before it, as players do — so a time between two frames gives the earlier frame. Frame numbers count from 1.

Videos are compressed in groups: a key frame is stored in full and the frames after it only as changes. Key frames usually come every one to ten seconds and at scene cuts, so every key frame is a quick way to get one picture per shot. Phones often record at a variable frame rate, with frames not evenly spaced; the page reads the real time of every frame, so stepping and frame numbers stay exact.

Scrub thumbnails: sprite sheets and the WebVTT track

A thumbnail track is a WebVTT file: each cue covers a few seconds of the video, and its text is the address of a picture with a #xywh=x,y,width, height rectangle (the spatial fragment of the W3C Media Fragments URI standard). Putting many small thumbnails on one sprite sheet saves the player from loading hundreds of separate pictures. Players that read such tracks — for example Plyr with its previewThumbnails option — show the matching picture above the progress bar.

Sheet names are relative by default (lecture-thumbs-1.jpg next to lecture-thumbnails.vtt, named after the video). If the sheets will live somewhere else, type that address (for example https://cdn.example.com/video-1/) before making them.

Limitations

  • What can be decoded depends on the browser: HEVC (H.265) needs a hardware decoder (Safari on Apple devices, and Chrome or Edge on most recent computers and phones have one); older formats such as AVI, WMV, FLV and MPG cannot be read at all.
  • HDR videos are shown and saved in standard dynamic range: the browser maps their colours to SDR when it draws a frame.
  • One run makes up to 1,000 frames, a contact sheet up to 100 frames and a thumbnail run up to 3,600 thumbnails. Contact sheets are 1,280, 1,920 or 3,840 (4K) pixels wide.
  • Save to a folder needs Chrome or Edge on a computer; other browsers get one ZIP file.
  • Some phones limit how large a picture can be drawn; very large frames (such as 8K) are then saved at a smaller size.
  • The pictures contain only the frame: the video’s location, date and camera details are not copied into them.

Frequently asked questions

What do I get without a pass?

Without a pass, Video Frame Extractor shows each frame and contact sheet at preview size (up to 640 pixels) with a MySmartCoPilot watermark, and a ZIP’s list of files with its first frames (up to 3). Until you unlock it, the result can’t be downloaded, copied or saved to your device. A Pro, Premium or Ultimate pass, a one-time payment that never renews, unlocks the full result. The pricing page lists the passes and their prices.

Do I need a pass?

To download, copy or save frames in full, yes: a Pro pass unlocks every Pro tool. Without a pass you can open any video and step through it: the viewer shows each frame at preview size (up to 640 pixels, and never more than half the frame’s size) with a MySmartCoPilot watermark. Make ZIP shows the list of files and the first frames (up to 3) the same way, a contact sheet shows marked at preview size, and scrub thumbnails show their first sheets and the first lines of the .vtt file. An unlock of one result (Ways to unlock lists how) makes it in full from the video still open on the page.

Is my video uploaded?

No. The file is read by your browser and every frame is decoded and saved on your device; nothing is sent anywhere.

Why did I get the frame before the time I typed?

A frame stays on screen until the next one starts. A time between two frames therefore belongs to the earlier frame — the one a player shows at that moment. Use → to go to the next frame.

How do I get every frame of a short clip?

Under Many frames choose Every frame between From and To and set From and To around the part you need: each frame the video holds there is saved once, at its own time, also when the frame rate varies. One run makes up to 1,000 frames (about 33 seconds at 30 fps), so for longer parts run it on one stretch after another.

PNG, JPG or WebP — which should I choose?

PNG for the exact decoded pixels (large files), JPG for photos to share (small, works everywhere), WebP for the web (smaller than JPG at the same quality). Safari cannot write WebP itself, so the page encodes WebP with its own encoder there.

Can I use the thumbnails with my own video player?

Yes, if the player reads WebVTT thumbnail tracks. Upload the sprite sheets and the .vtt file, and point the player’s thumbnail option to the .vtt file — for Plyr that is previewThumbnails: { enabled: true, src: 'thumbnails.vtt' }.
