About the Trademark Class Finder
A trademark is registered for particular goods or services, grouped into the 45 classes of the Nice Classification — goods in classes 1 to 34, services in 35 to 45. In India the Trade Marks Registry classifies according to the current edition (Trade Marks Rules 2017, r.20), and the filing fee is charged for each class (Trade Marks Act s.18(2)), so picking the right classes — and only those — matters.
Describe what you sell (“herbal soap”, “mobile app”, “café”) to search the 10,000-odd indications of the current edition, NCL 13-2026. Open any class to read its heading and explanatory note — what it includes and what belongs elsewhere — compare two classes side by side, tick the indications that fit, and get a ready specification for Form TM-A with the official fee for your applicant type. Everything runs in your browser.
How to use it
- Describe your goods or services in plain words and press Search. Results are grouped by class, best match first.
- Open a class to read its heading and explanatory note, or to see and filter every indication in it.
- Use Compare to put two classes side by side — for example 9 (downloadable software) and 42 (software as a service).
- Tick the indications that describe your business, and add your own wording for a class if needed. The specification builds itself, one paragraph per class.
- Choose your applicant type and filing mode to see the official fee per class and in total, then copy or download the specification.
Examples
software
Class 42 (software as a service, software design and development) and Class 9 (downloadable and recorded software) — usually both.
café
Class 43 (café services, restaurant services); add Class 30 for packaged coffee or baked goods sold under the brand.
Individual / startup / small enterprise, e-filing, classes 9, 35 and 42
₹4,500 × 3 = ₹13,500 (₹9,000 per class for other applicants).
Common uses
- Founders and small businesses working out which classes to file in before applying.
- Trademark agents and lawyers drafting a specification quickly from standard Nice wording.
- Budgeting the official fee for a multi-class application.
- Students learning how the Nice Classification is organised.
Official fees for a trademark application (Form TM-A)
- Individual, startup or small enterprise: ₹4,500 per class by e-filing, ₹5,000 on paper.
- Any other applicant: ₹9,000 per class by e-filing, ₹10,000 on paper.
The fee is for each class and each mark (Trade Marks Rules 2017, First Schedule, entry 1). Expedited examination (rule 34) costs ₹20,000 per class for individuals, startups and small enterprises and ₹40,000 for others, e-filing only. A registration lasts ten years and is renewed for ₹9,000 per class (e-filing). “Startup” means an entity recognised under the Startup India initiative; “small enterprise” is defined in rule 2(1)(v) by reference to the MSMED Act — attach the certificate when you file.
Choosing classes well
- Classify finished products by what they do or are for, not by what they are made of (Nice general remarks).
- Services go by the activity: retail of clothing is Class 35 (bringing goods together for others), making clothing for others is Class 40, the clothing itself is Class 25.
- Software: downloadable or recorded software, apps and digital files are in Class 9; software you provide online without download (SaaS, PaaS) and software development are in Class 42.
- Use the precise indications rather than whole class headings, and only the classes you use or genuinely intend to use — a mark not used for five years can be removed (Trade Marks Act s.47).

Limitations
- A search aid, not legal advice. It does not check whether the mark is available — search the Trade Marks Registry and have the application reviewed before filing.
- The Registry also accepts goods and services of Indian origin listed in its own class-wise index, which is not included here. Words such as “saree”, “ghee”, “agarbatti” or “masala” are matched to the nearest Nice wording (saris, butter, incense, spices) — check the Registry’s index for the exact term.
- Fees are the official government fees only; a trademark agent’s or lawyer’s charges are extra.
