About the Itemised Bill Split Calculator
Split a restaurant, café or bar bill fairly when people had different things. Add the people, type each item from the bill and tick who shared it — or give uneven shares, such as two of the four naans. Then add the discount, GST or other tax, service charge, packing or delivery charges and tip, and the calculator works out exactly what each person owes, with a breakdown of their items.
Every split is done in whole paise with the largest-remainder method, so the shares always add up to the bill total — no paisa goes missing and none is invented. Round the total like the restaurant does, or ask for whole-rupee shares. Then make a UPI QR code for each share, paid to the UPI ID of whoever settled the bill. Everything runs in your browser; the bill is kept only on this device.
How to use it
- Under Who is sharing?, type the names. Add or remove people with the buttons.
- Under What was ordered?, enter each item with its quantity and price (for one). Tap the names under an item to choose who shared it; use Uneven shares when someone had more of it.
- Add the discount, tax and charges as printed on the bill — a percentage or a rupee amount — and choose how to share other charges and the tip.
- Read Who pays what. Enter the total from the receipt to check that nothing was missed, then Copy summary, Share or Download CSV.
- Optional: under Collect by UPI, choose who paid and enter their UPI ID to get a QR code and link for everyone else’s share.
Examples
Paneer tikka ₹320 (all three) · 4 butter naan at ₹60 (all three) · veg biryani ₹280 (Asha and Ravi) · 2 mango lassi at ₹90 (Meera) · GST 5%
Bill total ₹1,071.00 → Asha ₹343.01 · Ravi ₹343.00 · Meera ₹384.99
The paneer tikka splits as ₹106.67 + ₹106.67 + ₹106.66 and the ₹51 of GST as ₹16.34 + ₹16.33 + ₹18.33, so the shares add up to the paisa.
The same bill with **Whole-rupee shares** ticked
Asha ₹343 · Ravi ₹343 · Meera ₹385 — still ₹1,071 in total
Pizza ₹500 (A and B) · Coke ₹100 (A) · 10% discount · GST 5% · service charge 10% · tip ₹100 split equally
Bill total ₹721.00 → A ₹412.25 · B ₹308.75
Common uses
- Dinners, office lunches and parties where everyone ordered something different.
- Sharing a food-delivery order with packing and delivery charges.
- Collecting money by UPI from friends after you paid the whole bill.
- Checking that a restaurant’s total, tax and service charge add up.
How the shares are worked out
- Each item’s line total (quantity × price) is shared by the people ticked on it, in proportion to their shares — 1 each unless you set uneven shares.
- A discount is shared in proportion to each person’s items. Tax (each tax line) and the service charge are worked out on the items after the discount and shared the same way.
- Other charges and the tip are shared equally among the people who had something, or in proportion to what each had — you choose. A tip in percent can be a percentage of the food or of the total including tax.
- If you round the total, the round-off is shared in proportion too.
Each amount is divided in whole paise with the largest-remainder (Hamilton) method: everyone first gets their share rounded down, and the paise left over go one at a time to the largest remainders. So ₹320 for three people is ₹106.67 + ₹106.67 + ₹106.66 — exactly ₹320.
Service charge in India
The Central Consumer Protection Authority’s guidelines (F.No. J-25/57/2022-CCPA) say that no hotel or restaurant shall add a service charge automatically or by default in the bill, collect it under any other name, or force a consumer to pay it — they must clearly say that it is "voluntary, optional and at consumer’s discretion" — and that service charge shall not be collected "by adding it along with the food bill and levying GST on the total amount". A consumer charged in breach of the guidelines can ask for it to be removed, complain to the National Consumer Helpline on 1915 or the NCH app, file a complaint on the e-Daakhil portal, or write to the District Collector or to CCPA at [email protected] (CCPA guidelines, archived copy).
So in this calculator the service charge is optional and no tax is added to it. A tip is a separate, voluntary payment to the staff.
Collecting the money by UPI
Each QR code holds a UPI payment link in the format of NPCI’s UPI Linking Specifications (version 1.6): upi://pay?pa=<UPI ID>&pn=<name>&am=<amount>&cu=INR&tn=<note>. Scanning it with any UPI app — or tapping Open in UPI app on a phone — opens the payment with the payee, amount and a note such as "Dinner - Ravi" filled in; the payer still checks the name and confirms with their own UPI PIN.
The codes are drawn in your browser from the UPI ID you type. Nothing is sent to MySmartCoPilot, and no money passes through it. Before sharing the codes, make sure the UPI ID is right: a payment to a wrong ID usually cannot be undone.
Limitations
- One person pays the bill. For trips and groups with several payers over many bills, use the group expense splitter.
- Each tax line applies to all items. If items were taxed at different rates, type the tax amount from the bill (₹) instead of a rate.
- A tax rate (%) is worked out on the items only. If your bill also adds GST to the service charge, packing or delivery, type the tax amount printed on the bill (₹) so the total matches.
- The calculator cannot verify that a UPI ID belongs to the right person, and some UPI apps may not pre-fill an amount for a personal UPI ID — the payer can type it in.
- The bill is saved in this browser so it survives a reload; press New bill to clear it (you can undo that once).
Privacy
Everything happens in your browser, including the UPI QR codes. The bill — names, items and the UPI ID you type — is saved in this browser’s local storage so it survives a reload, and is never uploaded. Press New bill to clear it.
Frequently asked questions
How do I split a bill when everyone had different things?
Enter each item from the bill and tick the people who shared it. Shared starters are split between everyone ticked, and a drink only one person had is theirs alone. Tax, service charge and tip are then shared in proportion to what each person had, so the person with the bigger order pays more of them.
Is service charge compulsory in restaurants in India?
No. Under the CCPA guidelines, a hotel or restaurant may not add a service charge automatically or by default, may not force you to pay it, and must tell you that it is voluntary. You can ask for it to be removed, or complain to the National Consumer Helpline on 1915.
Should GST be charged on the service charge?
The CCPA guidelines say service charge shall not be collected by adding it to the food bill and levying GST on the total amount. This calculator therefore works out GST on the items (after any discount) and adds the service charge separately.
Why does one person pay a paisa more than another for the same items?
Because the amount does not divide exactly: ₹100 between three people is ₹33.33 + ₹33.33 + ₹33.34. The extra paisa goes to the largest remainder (ties to the person listed first), so the shares add up to the bill. Tick Whole-rupee shares to avoid paise altogether.
Should the tip be split equally or by what each person had?
Either is fair — it is a choice for the group. "By what each had" keeps the tip proportional to each order, like the tax; "Equally" shares it evenly among the people who had something.
Is the bill or my UPI ID sent anywhere?
No. The calculation and the QR codes are made in your browser, and the bill is saved only in this browser’s storage until you start a new one. Nothing is uploaded.
