Your pages

Optional: put a date (YYYY-MM-DD) after a URL to use it as lastmod. You can also paste or open an existing sitemap.xml to clean, de-duplicate or split it, or a CSV/TSV export — the URL and date columns are found automatically. Browsers can’t crawl other websites (cross-origin security, CORS), so this tool can’t discover your pages by itself — export the list from your CMS or analytics and paste it here.

About the XML Sitemap Generator

An XML sitemap lists the pages you want search engines to find. Paste your page URLs — or a base URL and a list of paths — and this tool writes a sitemap that follows the sitemaps.org protocol: absolute URLs, entity-escaped characters, UTF-8, one entry per page.

It checks every line and tells you what it skipped and why: missing https://, spaces, URLs on another host or outside the sitemap’s folder, URLs over 2,048 characters. Dates that can’t be used as lastmod (impossible or in another format) are reported, and those URLs are kept without one. Duplicates and #fragments are removed. Lists above 50,000 URLs or 50 MB are split into several files plus a sitemap index, downloaded together as a ZIP.

Browsers can’t crawl other websites (cross-origin security, CORS), so the tool doesn’t discover pages for you: export the list from your CMS, an existing sitemap or your analytics.

How to use it

  1. Paste one URL per line, or switch to Base URL + paths and enter your domain once. You can also paste or open an existing sitemap.xml to clean, de-duplicate or split it, or a CSV/TSV export from your CMS, crawler or Search Console — the URL column (and a lastmod date column) is found automatically.
  2. Optionally add a date after a URL (https://example.com/page 2026-09-30) and choose lastmod: Dates from my list.
  3. Check Sitemap location — by default /sitemap.xml at the root of your site: the one most of your URLs are on.
  4. Review the checks and skipped lines, then download sitemap.xml (or the ZIP with all files and the index).
  5. Upload the files to your site and add the Sitemap: line to robots.txt or submit the URL in Google Search Console.

Examples

Two pages, one with a lastmod date
Input
https://www.example.com/
https://www.example.com/blog/how-to-brew-tea/ 2026-09-12
Result
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<urlset xmlns="http://www.sitemaps.org/schemas/sitemap/0.9">
  <url>
    <loc>https://www.example.com/</loc>
  </url>
  <url>
    <loc>https://www.example.com/blog/how-to-brew-tea/</loc>
    <lastmod>2026-09-12</lastmod>
  </url>
</urlset>
Characters that must be escaped
Input
https://www.example.com/shop?size=100g&pack=2
Result
<loc>https://www.example.com/shop?size=100g&amp;pack=2</loc>

Every & must be written as &amp; (and <, >, ", ' as entities) or the XML is invalid.

What belongs in a sitemap

List the canonical URLs of pages you want to appear in search results — Google recommends fully-qualified, absolute URLs and crawls them exactly as listed. Leave out redirects, error pages, noindex pages and duplicate versions (for example both /page and /page/).

A sitemap only covers URLs in its own folder and below: https://example.com/blog/sitemap.xml can list /blog/… pages but not /shop/…, and every URL must use the same protocol and host. That is why the root, https://example.com/sitemap.xml, is the usual place. URLs from other hosts are accepted by Google only when you have verified both sites in Search Console or reference the sitemap from the other site’s robots.txt.

lastmod, changefreq and priority

  • lastmod — the date of the last significant change to the page (main content, structured data or links — not just the copyright year). Google uses it only when it is consistently and verifiably accurate, so leave it out rather than stamping today’s date on every URL.
  • changefreq and priority — Google ignores both. They are optional in the protocol and other crawlers may read them, so the tool offers them but leaves them out by default.

Dates use W3C Datetime: 2026-09-30, or a full time with a time zone such as 2026-09-30T14:05:00+05:30.

Large sites: 50,000 URLs and the sitemap index

A single sitemap may contain at most 50,000 URLs and be at most 50 MB (52,428,800 bytes) uncompressed. Above either limit the tool writes sitemap-1.xml, sitemap-2.xml … and a sitemap index that lists them. Upload them all to the same folder and submit only the index; an index can list up to 50,000 sitemaps.

Limitations

  • It cannot crawl your website to find pages: browsers block reading other sites (CORS), and nothing is sent to a server. You supply the list.
  • Writes standard URL sitemaps only — no image, video or news extensions and no hreflang alternates.
  • Files are plain XML, not gzip-compressed (.xml.gz).
  • Lists of up to 1,000,000 URLs are supported; very large lists need a computer with enough memory.

Frequently asked questions

Does a sitemap improve my rankings?

No. A sitemap helps search engines discover and re-crawl your URLs, especially on new or large sites. Google calls submitting a sitemap “merely a hint”: it doesn’t guarantee that every URL is crawled or indexed.

Why are some of my lines skipped?

Each skipped line is listed with the reason — for example a missing https://, a space inside the URL or a different host than the sitemap (unless you enter its location, the sitemap is for the site most of your URLs are on). Fix the line and generate again, or untick “Skip URLs on other hosts” if you really want cross-host URLs. A date that can’t be used (not YYYY-MM-DD, or impossible such as 30 February) never costs you the URL: it is kept without lastmod and the date is named in the checks.

How do I tell Google about my sitemap?

Submit the sitemap URL in Search Console’s Sitemaps report, or add a line such as Sitemap: https://example.com/sitemap.xml anywhere in your robots.txt. For split sitemaps, submit the index.

Can this tool create a sitemap from my website automatically?

No — a web page cannot read other websites because of browser security (CORS), and MySmartCoPilot doesn’t run a crawler server. Most CMSs (WordPress, Shopify, Wix and others) can export a URL list or already publish a sitemap you can copy URLs from.

Should every URL get the same lastmod date?

Only if every page really changed on that date. Google uses lastmod only when it is consistently accurate, so a made-up date can make it ignore the field for your site.
