About the Reverse Text, Mirror & Upside Down

Type or paste text and see six versions at once: reversed character by character, with the word order reversed, with each word reversed in place, with the line order reversed, turned upside down (ʇxǝʇ) and mirrored. Copy whichever you need with one click. A palindrome check tells you whether the text reads the same backwards, ignoring spaces, punctuation, capitals and accents.

Characters are reversed the way you see them, not the way they are stored. An emoji with a skin tone such as 👍🏽, a flag such as 🇮🇳, a family emoji or an accented letter typed as a letter plus an accent stays one character. Reversing the stored code points instead would split them apart — 🇮🇳 (India) would become 🇳🇮 (Nicaragua).

How to use it

  1. Type or paste your text into the box. Every version below updates as you type.
  2. For text with several lines, choose whether the whole text is turned around (the last line comes first) or each line is reversed on its own with Keep line order.
  3. For Each word reversed, choose whether punctuation such as commas and brackets stays at the ends of words.
  4. Press Copy on the version you want, or Download it as a text file. The palindrome check above the results updates as you type.

Common uses

  • Writing backwards or mirrored text for puzzles, escape rooms, posters and social posts.
  • Turning a list upside down: reverse the line order of a log, a ranking or a playlist.
  • Checking words, phrases or a whole word list (one per line) for palindromes.
  • Testing how software handles reversed or unusual Unicode text.

How upside-down and mirror text work

Unicode has no “rotated” or “mirrored” style, so each letter is replaced by a real character that looks like it turned around, and the order of the characters is reversed. Many of them exist in Unicode for exactly this shape: ɐ is LATIN SMALL LETTER TURNED A, ǝ is TURNED E, ⅂ is TURNED SANS-SERIF CAPITAL L, ɘ is REVERSED E and ⸮ is REVERSED QUESTION MARK. Where Unicode has no such letter, a close look-alike from another alphabet is used, such as Ԁ (Cyrillic) for an upside-down P.

  • Upside down covers A–Z, a–z, 0–9 and common punctuation, and moves accents above a letter to below it (é becomes ǝ̗). With several lines, the whole block is turned, so the last line comes first, as on a page turned 180°. Turn on Keep line order to flip each line where it is.
  • Mirrored reverses each line and swaps letters for their mirror images: b and d, p and q, ( and ), ? and ⸮. There is no common mirrored look-alike for g, h, j, k, y, z, G, J, Q, Z and most digits, so those stay as they are, and the card tells you how many were left unchanged. (Unicode does have a few rare reversed letters for phonetics, such as a reversed k added in Unicode 14, but recently added characters are the most likely to show as empty boxes, so they are not used.)

Both tables work in both directions: turning upside-down text upside down again gives the original letters back.

What counts as one character

The text is split into user-perceived characters (extended grapheme clusters, defined in Unicode Standard Annex #29) using your browser’s built-in segmenter. A grapheme cluster keeps together what people see as one character: a letter and its accents, an emoji and its skin-tone modifier, the two regional-indicator letters of a flag, the parts of a family emoji joined by zero-width joiners, a keycap such as 1️⃣ and, in up-to-date browsers, Indic conjuncts such as क्षि. A Windows line ending (CR LF) is also one cluster, so reversed text keeps working line breaks.

Palindrome rules

Only letters and digits are compared, in any script. Upper and lower case are treated as the same (including ß = ss), accents are ignored (é = e), and compatibility forms count as plain letters, so fi, fullwidth and 𝐛𝐨𝐥𝐝 letters work. If your text has several lines, the tool also lists which lines are palindromes on their own, so you can paste a word list and find them all.

Limitations

  • Word order is reversed between spaces, so languages written without spaces between words (Chinese, Japanese, Thai) are treated as one long word.
  • Upside-down and mirrored text uses look-alike characters: screen readers read them as different letters, search engines and hashtags do not match them, and fonts that lack a few of them show empty boxes instead.
  • Ignoring accents in the palindrome check also merges letters that some languages treat as different, such as Russian й and и.
  • Scripts other than Latin keep their letters when turned or mirrored; only the character order changes.

Frequently asked questions

How do I write text backwards?

Type or paste it into the box and copy the Reversed text version. To keep the words in order and reverse only the letters inside each word, copy Each word reversed instead.

Why does a flag change into another flag when I reverse text in other tools?

A flag emoji is stored as two regional-indicator letters: 🇮🇳 is “I” + “N”. A tool that reverses the stored characters swaps them into “N” + “I”, which is the flag of Nicaragua. This tool reverses whole user-perceived characters, so flags, skin tones and family emoji stay intact.

How do I turn upside-down text back to normal?

Paste the upside-down text into the box and copy the Upside down version: turning it again gives the original letters back. The same works for mirrored text with the Mirrored version.

Can I paste upside-down text into Instagram, WhatsApp or a game?

It is ordinary Unicode text, so it can be pasted wherever text is accepted. Whether every character shows depends on the fonts on the reader’s device; a few rare ones may appear as boxes on older systems.

Does the palindrome check work with numbers and other languages?

Yes. Digits count, letters from any script are compared, and accents and capitals are ignored, so 12321, Ésope reste ici et se repose and Was it a car or a cat I saw? are all palindromes.

Is my text uploaded?

No. Everything is done in your browser; nothing you type is sent anywhere or stored.
