About the Random Generator

One page for everything random: numbers in any range (whole or decimal, with or without repeats), picking winners from a list, shuffling a list or splitting it into teams, flipping coins, rolling dice in standard notation, and generating colours.

Every result comes from your browser’s cryptographically secure random number generator (crypto.getRandomValues), and the maths avoids the shortcuts that make some outcomes more likely than others. Nothing you type is uploaded.

How to use it

  1. Choose what to generate: Numbers, List picker, Coin flip, Dice or Colours.
  2. Fill in the options — for numbers the range, how many and whether repeats are allowed; for a list, paste one item per line.
  3. Press the button (or Enter) to generate. Press it again for a fresh result.
  4. Copy or download the result. Your options are remembered on this device.

Examples

Lottery-style draw: six different numbers from 1 to 49
Input
Minimum 1 · Maximum 49 · How many 6 · No repeats · Smallest first
Result
For example: 3, 11, 19, 27, 38, 44 — different every time

There are 13,983,816 possible sets of six numbers, and each one is equally likely.

Draw winners from a list
Input
Asha
Ravi
Meera
John
Li
Result
Picked: one name, every name with the same chance

Press Remove picked from list to make the next draw from the names that are left.

Dice with “drop lowest”
Input
4d6dl1
Result
4d6dl1 [5, (2), 6, 3] = 14 · possible 3 to 18 · average 12.24

The dropped die is shown in brackets here and crossed out on the page.

Common uses

  • Raffles, giveaways and classroom draws.
  • Splitting a class or office into random teams.
  • Board games and tabletop role-playing games (D&D dice notation).
  • Random samples and test data; colour ideas for designs.

How fair is it?

Results come from crypto.getRandomValues, the Web Crypto API’s cryptographically secure generator, which your browser seeds from the operating system’s entropy source. Its output is unpredictable and statistically uniform.

Turning random bits into a number between 1 and n is where many generators go wrong: taking the remainder of a large random number (the modulo trick) slightly favours small results unless n divides the range exactly. This tool uses rejection sampling instead — draws that would cause bias are thrown away and redrawn — so every value in your range has exactly the same chance. Lists are shuffled with the Fisher–Yates algorithm, which makes every order equally likely. Draws without repeats stop a Fisher–Yates shuffle after the values you need (or, for a few values from a huge range, use Floyd’s algorithm), so every combination is equally likely too.

Dice notation

  • NdM — roll N dice with M sides: 3d6, 1d20, d8 (one die)
  • + and − — add or subtract numbers or more dice: 1d20+5, 2d6+1d4-1
  • d% — a percentile die (1–100); dF — a Fate/Fudge die (−1, 0 or +1)
  • khN / klN — keep the highest / lowest N dice: 2d20kh1 (advantage), 2d20kl1 (disadvantage)
  • dlN / dhN — drop the lowest / highest N dice: 4d6dl1, the classic way to roll ability scores

The result shows every die (dropped dice crossed out), the possible range and the exact average.

Decimal numbers

With decimal places, the tool picks evenly among all values with that many places in your range. For 0 to 1 with 2 places, each of 0.00, 0.01 … 1.00 (101 values) is equally likely, and both ends are included. The minimum and maximum are read exactly as typed, so there are no floating-point surprises such as 0.30000000000000004.

Limitations

  • This is not a certified random number generator for regulated lotteries, gambling or legal draws; use an approved service where the rules require one.
  • Up to 1,00,000 numbers or list items at a time, 1,000 dice per roll and 60 colours.
  • Results are not saved — copy or download anything you want to keep. Coin tallies and dice history reset when you leave the page.

Frequently asked questions

Is this truly random?

It uses your browser’s cryptographically secure random number generator — the same kind used to create encryption keys. It is unpredictable and unbiased for any practical purpose, including games, draws and sampling.

How do I get numbers without repeats?

Tick No repeats. You can then ask for as many numbers as the range holds — for example all 10 numbers from 1 to 10 in random order.

Can I pick several winners from a list?

Yes. Paste the names (one per line), set How many to pick and press Pick. Each name can be picked at most once unless you turn on Allow repeats.

How do I split people into random teams?

Paste the names, choose Split into groups, set the number of groups and press Make groups. Group sizes differ by at most one.

What does 4d6dl1 mean?

Roll four six-sided dice, drop the lowest and add up the other three. The result is always between 3 and 18, and the average is about 12.24.

Is my list sent anywhere or saved?

No. Everything runs in your browser and the list is not stored. Only your options (such as the range or number of groups) are remembered on this device.
