About the Unlock PDF (Remove a Password You Know)

Unlock PDF removes the password from a PDF you are entitled to open — your e-Aadhaar, a bank or credit-card statement, a salary slip — so the copy opens without asking and can be merged, compressed or uploaded to portals that reject protected files. Type the password once; the result is an unencrypted copy with nothing else in the document changed.

Some PDFs open freely but carry restrictions (no printing, no copying, no editing). Those restrictions are removed only with the owner (permissions) password, which qpdf checks before anything is changed. There is no guessing, no password lists and no cracking: only the password you type is tried, it is checked by qpdf running in your browser, and it is never stored or sent.

How to use it

  1. Choose the protected PDF (or drag it onto the box). MySmartCoPilot checks what kind of protection it has.
  2. Type the password. For an e-Aadhaar, open e-Aadhaar password format to build it from your name and year of birth.
  3. Press Unlock PDF (or Remove restrictions for a file that opens freely), then download the unlocked copy.

Examples

e-Aadhaar downloaded from UIDAI
Input
Name on Aadhaar: SURESH KUMAR · year of birth: 1990 → password SURE1990
Result
aadhaar-unlocked.pdf — opens without a password (UIDAI’s digital signature shows as invalid in the copy)
Statement that opens freely but can’t be printed
Input
Owner (permissions) password from the bank’s email
Result
statement-unlocked.pdf — printing and copying work; without the owner password the restrictions stay

Common uses

  • Uploading your e-Aadhaar, PAN or statements to a portal that doesn’t accept password-protected files.
  • Merging protected statements into one file for a loan or visa application.
  • Archiving payslips and statements without having to remember each password.
  • Printing a document you own whose printing was restricted, when you have its owner password.

The e-Aadhaar password format

UIDAI’s FAQ says the e-Aadhaar password is the first four letters of your name in capitals (as printed on the Aadhaar) followed by your year of birth (YYYY). UIDAI’s own examples:

  • SURESH KUMAR, born 1990 → SURE1990
  • SAI KUMAR, born 1990 → SAIK1990 (the space is skipped)
  • P. KUMAR, born 1990 → P.KU1990 (the full stop counts)
  • RIA, born 1990 → RIA1990 (shorter names are used in full)

The helper on this page follows exactly that rule; it only builds the one password from what you type.

Open password vs owner password

A PDF can have two passwords. The open (user) password is needed to read the file; with it you can save an unencrypted copy here. The owner (permissions) password controls restrictions such as printing and copying; a file can open freely and still be restricted. To remove restrictions, MySmartCoPilot asks for the owner password and lets qpdf verify it — knowing only that the file opens is not enough.

When you unlock with the open password, the copy has no restrictions either, because restrictions can’t exist without encryption. Please keep to any limits the author set.

Digital signatures

Documents such as the e-Aadhaar are digitally signed. A signature covers the exact bytes of the signed file, so it can’t stay valid in any rewritten copy — the unlocked copy shows the signature as invalid. The document content is the same; keep the original (protected) file wherever a valid signature matters.

Sources

  • ISO 32000-2:2020, section 7.6 — the standard security handler and how readers check the user (open) and owner (permissions) passwords.
  • qpdf manual (qpdf.readthedocs.io) — qpdf decrypts the file and verifies which password was given.
  • UIDAI, e-Aadhaar FAQ (Aadhaar Online Services, uidai.gov.in) — the e-Aadhaar password format and examples quoted above.

Limitations

  • You need the password. Forgotten passwords can’t be recovered here, and MySmartCoPilot doesn’t try to guess them.
  • Bank, card and employer passwords follow each sender’s own format — the email or message that came with the document explains it.
  • Files protected with certificates (public-key security) or DRM aren’t supported; only the standard password security of PDF is.
  • Very large files need plenty of memory; on phones, smaller files work best.

Privacy

Everything happens in your browser. What you enter or open here is not uploaded or stored by MySmartCoPilot.

Frequently asked questions

Is my password or PDF uploaded?

No. qpdf runs inside your browser as WebAssembly. The file and the password stay in this tab’s memory, are never sent anywhere and are not stored.

What is the password for my e-Aadhaar?

According to UIDAI: the first four letters of your name in capitals, as printed on your Aadhaar, followed by your year of birth — for example SURE1990 for SURESH KUMAR born in 1990. Use the e-Aadhaar password format helper on this page.

Can you unlock a PDF if I don’t know the password?

No. This tool removes a password you already know. It doesn’t guess, use password lists or crack files.

Why does it ask for an owner password when the PDF opens without one?

The file is restricted (for example, printing or copying is blocked). Restrictions can only be removed with the owner password that set them, so MySmartCoPilot asks for it and qpdf checks it.

Will the unlocked PDF look different?

No. Only the encryption is removed; pages, text, images, forms and metadata are unchanged. A digital signature, if there was one, shows as invalid in the copy.
