About the Make Background Transparent
Make a plain background transparent by clicking it. The magic wand removes the connected area round your click — the white behind a logo, the grey sweep behind a product, a screenshot’s backdrop — and That colour everywhere also clears the same colour inside letters and gaps. A tolerance slider takes in near shades, a soft edge band keeps anti-aliased outlines smooth, and the background’s colour is un-mixed from the edge pixels so no white or green halo is left. For green and blue screens, despill removes the colour cast on the subject.
Fix the rest with Erase and Restore brushes, check the result on a grid, white or black, and save a transparent PNG or WebP at full size. It is instant and needs no AI model download — the companion to the AI Background Remover for photos with busy backgrounds — and it can clear the same backdrop from a whole set of images at once. Nothing is uploaded.
How to use it
- Choose, drop or paste an image. If its corners share one colour, that backdrop is removed straight away; Undo brings it back.
- With Pick colour, click any background still showing. Choose The connected area (the magic wand) or That colour everywhere before clicking.
- Adjust Tolerance until shadows and noise are gone but the subject is untouched; Edge softness, Shrink or grow and Feather tune the outline. Turn on despill for green or blue screens.
- Use Erase and Restore to paint over what is left or missing (zoom in for detail), then Download a PNG or WebP. For more images on the same backdrop, use More images, same background.
Examples
A JPG logo on a white background · corners’ colour removed automatically · Tolerance 12
A transparent PNG of the logo; the white inside the letters stays unless you also pick it with “That colour everywhere”
A photo with a light grey backdrop and a soft floor shadow · Tolerance 25 · Feather 1 px
The product on transparency, with the shadow removed or kept depending on the tolerance
A person in front of a green screen · That colour everywhere · Remove green spill 70%
The person on transparency, without the green tint on hair and skin edges
Common uses
- Logos and signatures on white turned into transparent PNGs for websites, documents and slides.
- Product photos on a plain backdrop for marketplaces, catalogues and banners.
- Green- or blue-screen photos and video stills.
- Icons, clip art, diagrams and screenshots with a solid background.
- Stickers and emoji-style images for chat apps.
Connected area, edges or everywhere
- The connected area (magic wand) fills outward from your click through every neighbouring pixel within the tolerance of the clicked colour. It moves only between pixels that share a side, so a one-pixel diagonal gap in an outline does not let it leak into the subject.
- The corners’ colour removes every area of that colour touching the edge of the picture — what a plain backdrop is — and is what the batch mode uses.
- That colour everywhere (a colour key) removes the colour wherever it appears: inside the holes of letters, between strands of hair, through a window. Pick a colour the subject itself does not use.
Colours are compared with a perceptual weighted RGB distance (the “redmean” formula from compuphase), which counts green differences more than blue ones, as the eye does. A click samples the median of the 5 × 5 pixels round it, so JPEG noise does not throw it off.
Clean edges
Pixels on the outline of a logo or a product are a mix of the subject and the background. Pixels just beyond the tolerance become partly transparent (Edge softness sets how far), and their colour is un-mixed from the known background: if a pixel is C = αF + (1 − α)B, its own colour F is recovered from the observed colour C, the background B and the opacity α (the matting equation of Smith and Blinn, “Blue Screen Matting”, SIGGRAPH 1996). That is what removes the light halo a white background leaves round dark edges.
Shrink by a pixel or two removes a fringe that remains; Grow brings back a thin outline that was removed; Feather softens a hard edge. Despill limits green (or blue) in the kept pixels to the strongest of the other two channels, the usual way to remove the colour a screen reflects onto the subject.
Many images on one backdrop
Product photos shot on the same sweep, scanned stamps or icons on white: set up the first image, then choose the others under More images, same background. Each image gets the same colours, tolerance and edge settings; clicked areas become “areas of that colour touching the edges”, which works however the subject is placed. Brush touch-ups belong to the first image only. Download each result or all of them as a ZIP (up to 50 images at a time).
Limitations
- Works for plain or nearly plain backgrounds. For photos with a busy background, use the AI Background Remover.
- Parts of the subject that have the background’s colour are removed with it — lower the tolerance, use the connected area instead of “everywhere”, or restore them with the brush.
- Soft shadows and gradients may need a higher tolerance and some brush work.
- Images over 16 megapixels (8 on phones and tablets) are reduced to that size.
- Edits are kept only while the page is open.

Frequently asked questions
Is my image uploaded?
No. Everything happens in your browser, and no AI model is downloaded: the background is removed by colour, on your device. After the page has loaded once it also works offline.
How do I remove a white background from a logo?
Open the logo; a white backdrop in the corners is removed at once. If white is left inside letters such as “o” or “a”, choose That colour everywhere and click it. Save as PNG.
Why is there a white halo round my image?
The edge pixels still hold some of the background. Keep Remove the background’s colour from edges on, raise Edge softness a little, or Shrink the edge by 1 px. Check on the black background to see it clearly.
Part of my subject disappeared. How do I get it back?
Lower the Tolerance, remove the colour that caused it from Removed colours, or choose Restore and paint it back. Undo (Ctrl+Z) reverses any step.
What is the difference from the Background Remover?
This tool removes a background by its colour: it is instant and exact for plain backdrops and graphics. The Background Remover uses an AI model to find people and objects in any photo, even on busy backgrounds.
Which format keeps the transparency?
PNG and WebP. WebP files are smaller; PNG is accepted everywhere. JPG cannot store transparency.
My PNG already has a transparent background. What happens to it?
It stays transparent, and soft edges keep their own transparency. Clicks remove the colours that still show (a white box, a leftover border); a click on a part that is already transparent removes nothing.
