About the Kundli Matching (Guna Milan)

Enter the birth details of the boy (groom) and the girl (bride) — or just the nakshatra and pada of each Moon if that is what you know — and see the traditional Ashtakoota guna milan: varna, vashya, tara, yoni, graha maitri, gana, bhakoot and nadi, each with its points and a sentence on how they were worked out, and the total out of 36.

The page also checks nadi dosha, bhakoot dosha and mangal dosha (from the Lagna, the Moon and Venus) as calculations, and lists the facts some traditions treat as exceptions. The Moons are calculated in your browser with the same engine as the kundli generator. It reports a traditional calculation only: it does not say whether two people should marry. Without a pass, the free preview shows the total guna score out of 36 in full, with the dosha checks and the first rows of the koota table; the rest of the result, and copying, downloading or printing it, come with a Pro pass, or after unlocking this result.

How to use it

  1. For each person choose Birth details (date, time and place of birth) or Nakshatra only (the Moon’s nakshatra and pada from a kundli). Names are optional and only appear on the printout.
  2. For birth details, search for the place of birth; the time zone’s offset on that date is applied, and an old record’s offset can be typed under Coordinates, time zone and UTC offset.
  3. Press Match kundlis — or Example to see one first.
  4. Read the eight koota rows and the total, then the dosha checks and the two Moons’ details. Open The scoring tables this page uses to see every table.
  5. With a pass, or after unlocking this result, use Copy summary, Download summary or Print one page; the free preview shows the total guna score out of 36 and the first koota rows.

Examples

The example on the page
Input
Groom: 15 August 1990, 06:30, Varanasi · Bride: 23 November 2001, 22:10, Pune
Result
26.5 of 36: varna 1, vashya 1, tara 1.5, yoni 3, graha maitri 5, gana 0, bhakoot 7, nadi 8 · no nadi or bhakoot dosha · both have Mars in a mangal-dosha house from at least one of the Lagna, the Moon and Venus.

Gana scores 0 because the groom’s Moon is in a Manushya nakshatra (Rohini) and the bride’s in a Rakshasa one (Shatabhisha).

Nakshatras only
Input
Groom: Ashwini pada 1 · Bride: Bharani pada 1
Result
34 of 36: only yoni loses points (horse with elephant, 2 of 4). Mangal dosha is not checked without the birth details.
The same nakshatra in two rashis
Input
Groom: Krittika pada 1 (Mesha) · Bride: Krittika pada 2 (Vrishabha)
Result
19 of 36 with nadi dosha (both Antya) and bhakoot dosha (a 2/12 pair of signs) · the page notes that the Moons share a nakshatra in different rashis and padas — facts some traditions treat as setting nadi dosha aside.

The eight kootas

All eight come from the two Moons: the sign (rashi) and the nakshatra each Moon is in.

  • Varna (1): water signs Brahmin, fire Kshatriya, earth Vaishya, air Shudra; 1 point when the groom’s varna is the same as or higher than the bride’s.
  • Vashya (2): quadruped, human, water, wild (Simha) and insect (Vrishchika) signs, with Dhanu and Makara split at 15°; same group 2, one controls the other 1, one is the other’s prey ½, enemies 0.
  • Tara (3): count the nakshatras from the bride’s to the groom’s and back, inclusive; a count that falls on the 3rd, 5th or 7th place of a cycle of nine (Vipat, Pratyari, Vadha) is unfavourable; 1.5 points for each favourable direction.
  • Yoni (4): the animal of each nakshatra; same animal 4, friendly 3, neutral 2, unfriendly 1, sworn enemies 0.
  • Graha maitri (5): the natural (Parashari) friendship of the two Moon-sign lords (the friends, neutrals and enemies listed on Saravali’s dignities page); same lord or mutual friends 5, friend and neutral 4, both neutral 3, friend and enemy 1, neutral and enemy ½, mutual enemies 0.
  • Gana (6): Deva, Manushya or Rakshasa nakshatra; the same gana 6, groom Deva with bride Manushya 6, groom Manushya with bride Deva 5, Deva with Rakshasa 1, Manushya with Rakshasa 0.
  • Bhakoot (7): the two Moon signs counted from each other; 2/12, 5/9 and 6/8 give 0 (bhakoot dosha), every other pair 7.
  • Nadi (8): Adi, Madhya or Antya nakshatra; the same nadi gives 0 (nadi dosha), different nadis 8.

These are the eight kootas of the traditional North Indian guna milan, worth 36 points together (an overview is on Saravali’s Asta Koota page). Printed tables and other software differ in a few cells of the vashya, yoni, gana and graha maitri tables, so their totals can differ by a point or two; every table this page uses is shown under the results.

Doshas and their exceptions

The page reports nadi dosha (both Moons in the same nadi) and bhakoot dosha (a 2/12, 5/9 or 6/8 pair of Moon signs), then lists facts that some traditions treat as setting them aside: for nadi, the Moons sharing a rashi but not a nakshatra, or a nakshatra but not a rashi or pada; for bhakoot, Moon signs with the same lord or with lords that are natural friends of each other. Traditions disagree on which of these count, so the page only states whether each fact holds.

Mangal (Kuja) dosha is checked when both birth dates, times and places are given: Mars in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house counted from the Lagna, from the Moon and from Venus, with the usual check that both or neither have it. Some traditions leave out the 2nd house or list further exceptions.

Birth details or nakshatra only

With birth details, each Moon is calculated with the Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) ayanamsa of the Indian Astronomical Ephemeris (or the one you choose), and the Lagna, Mars and Venus are known for the mangal-dosha check. With only the nakshatra and pada, the Moon is placed in the middle of that pada: the eight kootas are the same as with the exact degree, except that Purva Ashadha pada 1 and Shravana pada 2 straddle the middle of Dhanu and Makara, where the vashya group changes — the page then says what the other half would score.

Limitations

  • A traditional calculation only: it does not judge whether two people should marry, and it gives no predictions or remedies.
  • Tables differ between traditions and programs (above all vashya, yoni, gana and graha maitri), so another calculator can give a different total.
  • South Indian porutham (the ten-porutham system with rajju and vedha) is a different method and is not calculated here.
  • An error in a birth time can move a Moon into the next pada or nakshatra and change several kootas; the kundli generator shows how close a birth is to such a change.
  • Mangal dosha needs both birth times and places; with nakshatras only it is not checked.
  • Old birth records may follow a local clock the time zone database does not hold (local mean time before standard time, or the city clocks Mumbai and Kolkata kept for decades after Indian Standard Time began): the page says when that applies, and the offset from the record can be typed for each person.

Frequently asked questions

What do I get without a pass?

Without a pass, Kundli Matching (Guna Milan) shows the total guna score out of 36 in full, with the dosha checks, the first rows of each table (up to 3) and watermarked charts; every other figure is hidden. Until you unlock it, the result can’t be downloaded, copied or printed. A Pro, Premium or Ultimate pass, a one-time payment that never renews, unlocks the full result. The pricing page lists the passes and their prices.

What score is considered a good match?

In the tradition, 18 of 36 is often quoted as the lowest acceptable total, and nadi, bhakoot and mangal dosha are usually looked at separately. This page reports the calculation only; it does not judge a match.

Why does another website give a different number of gunas?

Programs use slightly different vashya, yoni, gana and graha maitri tables, some cancel doshas automatically, and a different ayanamsa or birth time can move a Moon into the next nakshatra. Open The scoring tables this page uses to compare cell by cell.

Who should be entered as the boy and who as the girl?

The traditional tables are written for a groom and a bride, and two kootas depend on the order: varna (the groom’s varna should not be lower than the bride’s) and gana (a Deva groom with a Manushya bride scores 6, the other way round 5). The other six give the same points either way round.

Can I match with only the nakshatra or the rashi?

Yes — choose Nakshatra only and pick the Moon’s nakshatra and pada (charan) from the kundli. The pada also fixes the rashi. A rashi alone is not enough, because tara, yoni, gana and nadi depend on the nakshatra.

Is nadi dosha cancelled if we are in the same rashi?

Some traditions say so when the nakshatras differ, others when the nakshatra is the same but the rashi or pada differs. The page tells you which of these facts holds for your two charts and leaves the decision to your tradition or astrologer.

Are the birth details sent anywhere?

No. Everything is calculated in your browser and nothing is stored.
