About the Kenya Net Salary Calculator (PAYE, NSSF, SHIF, Housing Levy)
See what reaches your bank account from a Kenyan salary, and what the job costs your employer. Enter your gross salary a month: the calculator takes off NSSF in Tier I and Tier II, SHIF at 2.75%, the Affordable Housing Levy at 1.5% and PAYE by KRA’s bands — NSSF, SHIF and the levy come off before PAYE is worked out — and shows your net pay, a month and a year.
It also shows your employer’s side: the NSSF it matches and its own 1.5% levy, for the full cost of employment. Want a set net pay? Switch to “Gross for a net pay” and it finds the gross salary that gives it, to the cent. Add other pension contributions, insurance premiums, non-cash benefits and loan or SACCO deductions under the options. Nothing you type leaves your browser.
Without a pass the page shows a free preview of your own result: your net pay, or the gross pay a net pay needs, with the first rows of each table, while every other figure stays hidden until you unlock it with a Pro pass.
How to use it
- Choose Net pay from gross, and enter your gross salary a month: basic pay, cash allowances, overtime and commission.
- Add other pension contributions and other deductions such as loans or SACCO savings if you have them.
- Open Deductions and benefits for insurance premiums, non-cash benefits, overtime, the NSSF limits, SHIF and residence.
- Read your net pay, the payslip line by line, what your employer pays on top and how your PAYE is worked out; switch to Gross for a net pay to find the salary a net pay needs.
- With a Pro pass, or after unlocking this result, copy the summary or download the payslip as a CSV file; without one the page shows a free preview.
Examples
Net pay Ksh 57,876.65: NSSF Ksh 4,800 (Tier I Ksh 540, Tier II Ksh 4,260), SHIF Ksh 2,200, levy Ksh 1,200, PAYE Ksh 13,923.35. Your employer pays Ksh 86,000 in all.
Net pay Ksh 26,193.75, with PAYE of Ksh 731.25: just above the pay where personal relief cancels the tax.
Net pay Ksh 170,643.15 (68.3% of the salary): NSSF stops at Ksh 6,480 on the first Ksh 108,000, PAYE Ksh 62,251.85.
Needs a gross salary of Ksh 144,601.79 a month, with PAYE of Ksh 31,976.21.
Net pay Ksh 45,876.65: loans come off after tax, so the PAYE stays Ksh 13,923.35.
What comes off a Kenyan payslip
- NSSF: 6% of your pensionable pay, in Tier I on pay up to the Lower Earnings Limit and in Tier II from there up to the Upper Earnings Limit. NSSF’s notice to employers sets the Year 4 limits at Ksh 9,000 and Ksh 108,000: at most Ksh 540 and Ksh 5,940 a month, Ksh 6,480 in all. Overtime and other fluctuating pay are left out (NSSF Act).
- SHIF: 2.75% of your gross salary, at least Ksh 300 a month, with no upper limit (Social Health Authority; SHI Regulations, regulation 17).
- Affordable Housing Levy: 1.5% of your gross salary (Affordable Housing Act, section 4).
- PAYE: income tax by KRA’s bands on your pay less NSSF, SHIF, the levy and other allowed deductions, less personal relief of Ksh 2,400 a month (KRA).
Other pension contributions, loan repayments and SACCO savings come off as well when your employer deducts them; only pension contributions lower your PAYE.
What your employer pays on top
Your employer pays as much NSSF as you do, Tier I and Tier II, and an amount equal to your Housing Levy (Affordable Housing Act, section 5). SHIF and PAYE are yours alone. So on Ksh 80,000 a month the job costs Ksh 86,000: the salary plus Ksh 6,000.
Finding the gross for a net pay
In Gross for a net pay the calculator tries gross salaries until the net pay after every deduction you entered equals the net pay you want, and shows the lowest gross salary, to the cent, that reaches it. It is the figure to ask for in a job offer quoted as take-home pay.
When each one is paid over
Your employer pays the PAYE it deducts by the 9th of the following month (KRA), NSSF by the 9th (NSSF Act, section 20), SHIF by the 9th (regulation 17) and the levy by the ninth working day after the end of the month (Affordable Housing Act, section 4).
Limitations
- For one month’s pay from one employer, the same every month. A bonus paid in one month, arrears and a second job are not included.
- Non-cash benefits are entered at their taxable value: the calculator does not value a car or a house for you.
- Mortgage interest and a post-retirement medical fund also lower PAYE: the Kenya PAYE Income Tax Calculator includes them.
- The cost of employment is the salary, the employer’s NSSF and its Housing Levy. Other costs of employing someone, such as other levies, insurance and benefits, are not included.
- The NSSF limits are NSSF’s Year 4 rates; change them under Deductions and benefits when NSSF publishes new ones.
- An estimate from the published rules, not tax or payroll advice: your employer’s payroll, KRA, NSSF and SHA decide the amounts.

Frequently asked questions
What do I get without a pass?
Without a pass, Kenya Net Salary Calculator (PAYE, NSSF, SHIF, Housing Levy) shows your net pay (or the gross pay it needs) in full, with the first rows of each table (up to 3); every other figure is hidden. Until you unlock it, the result can’t be downloaded or copied. A Pro, Premium or Ultimate pass, a one-time payment that never renews, unlocks the full result. The pricing page lists the passes and their prices.
How is net salary calculated in Kenya?
Gross salary less NSSF (6% in Tier I and Tier II), SHIF (2.75%, at least Ksh 300), the Housing Levy (1.5%) and PAYE, which is worked out after the other three are taken off. On Ksh 80,000 a month the net pay is Ksh 57,876.65.
How much NSSF is deducted?
6% of your pay up to the Upper Earnings Limit: with NSSF’s Year 4 limits, Ksh 540 in Tier I on the first Ksh 9,000 and up to Ksh 5,940 in Tier II on pay up to Ksh 108,000, so at most Ksh 6,480 a month. Your employer pays the same again.
Is SHIF deducted before PAYE?
Yes. SHIF contributions, the Housing Levy you pay and NSSF all come off your income before the PAYE bands apply (Income Tax Act, sections 15(2) and 22A).
What does my employer pay on top of my salary?
Its own NSSF, as much as yours, and an amount equal to your Housing Levy. On Ksh 80,000 a month that is Ksh 6,000 on top.
Is my salary sent anywhere?
No. Everything is calculated in your browser; nothing you enter is uploaded or stored on a server.
