About the Excel Editor (Edit and Save XLSX in Your Browser)

Open an Excel workbook and change it on a phone, a Chromebook or any computer, without Excel and without uploading the file; with a pass, it saves again as the same kind of file. Type into cells, write formulas, insert and delete rows and columns, sort a range, filter what you see, find text in every sheet, fill a formula down, and undo any step. Formulas that depend on what you changed are recalculated as soon as you enter a change.

Saving gives back the same kind of file: an XLSX or XLSM workbook keeps its fonts, colours, borders, number formats, column widths, merged cells, conditional formatting, data validation lists, tables, comments, pictures, charts, print settings and macros, because only the cell data of the sheets you changed is written again — every other part of the file is copied exactly as it was. Older formats (XLS, XLSB, OpenDocument ODS, Numbers, CSV) open too, and are saved as a new XLSX with their values, formulas, number formats, merged cells and column widths.

Without a pass, the free preview opens your workbook and lets you edit it in full, the grid under a MySmartCoPilot watermark; a Pro pass unlocks saving the workbook, downloading a sheet as CSV and copying cells out of the grid.

How to use it

  1. Choose an Excel file or drop it on the box, or start with New workbook or Open a sample workbook. Nothing is uploaded: the file is read on your device.
  2. Pick a sheet from the tabs. Select a cell and type, or edit it in the cell box above the grid (easiest on a phone). Start with = for a formula; press Enter to save the cell, Escape to cancel.
  3. Use the toolbar to insert or delete rows and columns, sort the data around the selected cell (A→Z or Z→A, by the selected column), filter the rows you see, find text, or fill the first row of a selection down.
  4. Check the status line: it shows the sum, average and count of the selected cells, and says when a formula could not be recalculated here.
  5. Press Save workbook to download the edited file with the same name, or download the current sheet as CSV — with a pass, or after unlocking this workbook.

Examples

Correcting an invoice total on a phone
Input
invoice.xlsx: change the quantity in C7 from 5 to 6
Result
The line total and the invoice total are recalculated at once; the saved file keeps the logo, borders and the ₹ format of the original.
Adding a row inside a table of figures
Input
Insert a row above row 12 of a report with =SUM(D2:D20) at the bottom
Result
The new row takes the format of the row above it, and the total becomes =SUM(D2:D21), as in Excel. Charts, conditional formats and validation lists below the row move with it.
Typing data the way Excel reads it
Input
12% · 1,234.50 · 2026-10-09 · 0044 1234 · 007
Result
A percentage, a number with thousands separators, a date (shown in your date order), and two codes kept as text with their leading zeros.

Excel would turn 007 into 7 and cut numbers longer than 15 digits; here such entries stay text, so no digit is lost. Type an apostrophe first ('123) to keep anything as text.

Common uses

  • Fixing a value, a name or a formula in a workbook someone sent you, when you have no Excel on the device.
  • Updating a price list, timetable or stock sheet from a phone and sending it back in the same format.
  • Inserting rows into a formatted report without breaking its totals, charts and conditional formats.
  • Sorting or cleaning up a sheet exported by accounting or ERP software before importing it elsewhere.
  • Opening an old .xls or .ods file and saving it as a modern .xlsx workbook.

What is kept when you save

An XLSX workbook is a ZIP package of parts (ECMA-376): one part per sheet, one for the styles, one for the shared text, one per chart, picture, table or comment list. This editor rewrites only the cell data of the sheets you changed and adds any new text or number format to the parts that hold them; every other part, and everything else in the changed sheets, is copied byte for byte. So fonts, fills, borders, conditional formatting, data validation, hyperlinks, comments and notes, Excel tables, charts, pictures, page setup, frozen panes, defined names and VBA macros are all still there in the saved file.

When you insert or delete rows or columns, everything that points at cells follows, as in Excel: formulas in every sheet and in defined names, merged cells, column widths, conditional formats, validation lists, hyperlinks, filters, table ranges, comments, chart series, pivot-table sources and the anchors of pictures and charts. References to deleted cells become #REF!. Sorting moves cells with their formatting, comments and links.

Formulas and recalculation

About 150 of the most used Excel functions are calculated here — SUM, SUMIFS, COUNTIF, AVERAGE, ROUND, IF, IFS, IFERROR, AND/OR, VLOOKUP, HLOOKUP, XLOOKUP, INDEX, MATCH, TEXT, LEFT/MID/RIGHT, TEXTJOIN, DATE, EDATE, EOMONTH, DATEDIF, NETWORKDAYS, WORKDAY, PMT and more. When a workbook opens, every formula is calculated once and compared with the result Excel saved in the file; only formulas whose result matches exactly are recalculated after your edits. Files written by programs that leave calculating to Excel (many report exports save every formula without a result, or with 0) have their formulas calculated here when they open instead.

A formula this editor cannot calculate (a function it does not have, a table reference such as Table1[Amount], a link to another workbook) or one whose result differs from Excel’s keeps the value Excel saved. If a cell it uses changes, it is marked as not up to date, and so is every formula that uses that one. In very large workbooks, formulas that cannot be checked or recalculated within a few seconds keep their values and are marked the same way. Either way the saved workbook asks Excel to recalculate every formula when it opens it, so the file is always correct in Excel. Viewers that only show saved values (for example a phone’s file preview) show the values calculated here.

Keyboard

  • Arrow keys move; Shift+arrows extend the selection; Ctrl+arrows jump to the edge; Ctrl+A selects everything.
  • Enter or F2 edits the cell, typing replaces it, Alt+Enter adds a line break inside a cell, Escape cancels.
  • Delete clears the selected cells (their formatting stays), Ctrl+C, Ctrl+X and Ctrl+V copy, cut and paste tab-separated cells to and from Excel or Google Sheets (copying and cutting out of the grid with a pass).
  • Ctrl+Z undoes, Ctrl+Y redoes, Ctrl+D fills down, Ctrl+R fills right, Ctrl+F finds, Ctrl+S saves (with a pass).

Files it opens

  • XLSX, XLSM, XLTX, XLTM (Excel 2007 and later, also files written by Google Sheets, LibreOffice, WPS Office and accounting software): edited in place, saved as XLSX or XLSM (templates are saved as workbooks).
  • XLS (Excel 97–2003), XLSB, ODS and FODS (OpenDocument), Numbers and CSV/TSV: read with the open-source SheetJS Community Edition library and saved as a new XLSX with values, formulas, number formats, merged cells, column widths and hidden rows and columns. Fonts, colours, borders, comments, pictures and charts of these formats are not carried over — save such a file as .xlsx in Excel first if you need them.

Limitations

  • Workbooks up to 40 MB and 2 million cells (filled or formatted). Workbooks encrypted with a password to open cannot be read; sheets protected only against editing open normally and stay protected.
  • This editor changes cell contents, rows, columns and their order. It does not change formatting (fonts, colours, borders, number formats you pick), add, rename or delete sheets, or create charts, tables or pivot tables.
  • Header cells of Excel tables, PivotTables, array formulas and data tables cannot be edited here, and columns cannot be inserted or deleted inside a table — Excel keeps names and links that depend on them.
  • Formulas whose results spill over several cells (FILTER, SORT, UNIQUE, SEQUENCE …) cannot be typed here; existing ones are kept with their saved values.
  • The filter only changes which rows you see while editing; the saved file keeps every row.
  • Rows are drawn at one height in the grid; the heights saved in the file are kept.

Frequently asked questions

What do I get without a pass?

Without a pass, Excel Editor (Edit and Save XLSX in Your Browser) shows your workbook open and editable here in full, every sheet and formula under a MySmartCoPilot watermark; saving it, its CSV and copying cells out are locked. Until you unlock it, the result can’t be downloaded or copied. A Pro, Premium or Ultimate pass, a one-time payment that never renews, unlocks the full result. The pricing page lists the passes and their prices.

Is my Excel file uploaded anywhere?

No. The file is read and saved by this page on your device (in a background thread). It is never sent to a server.

Will the formatting of my workbook be kept?

Yes, for XLSX and XLSM files: only the cells you change are rewritten, and everything else in the file — fonts, colours, borders, conditional formatting, charts, pictures, comments, macros — is copied exactly as it was. XLS, ODS, Numbers and CSV files are saved as a new XLSX that keeps values, formulas, number formats, merged cells and column widths.

Are formulas recalculated when I change a number?

Yes, for the functions this editor calculates (about 150 common ones), and only for formulas whose result it reproduced exactly when the file opened (or that had no result in the file). Other formulas keep their saved value and are marked when a cell they use changes. The saved file asks Excel to recalculate everything when it opens.

Can I edit an Excel file on my phone?

Yes. Tap a cell, then type in the cell box above the grid and tap Enter (or the Save cell button). Swipe the grid to move around; tap a column letter or a row number to select it.

Why does 007 stay 007 instead of becoming 7?

Numbers with a leading zero (codes, PIN codes, phone numbers) and numbers with more than 15 digits (card, account and ID numbers) are kept as text here, so no digit is lost; Excel would change them. Type an apostrophe first to keep any entry as text, or type the number without the zero to make it a number.

Does it open files from Google Sheets, LibreOffice or WPS Office?

Yes — download them as .xlsx (or .ods) and open them here. XLSX files keep their formatting when saved; ODS files are saved as XLSX.

What happens to macros?

Macros in XLSM files are kept in the saved file, untouched. They are never run here.
