About the Base58 / Base58Check Encoder & Decoder

Encode and decode complete text or hex bytes with the Bitcoin, Flickr and Ripple alphabets. Base58Check adds one version byte and a four-byte double-SHA-256 checksum. Leading zero bytes are retained. A checksum match is an integrity check, not proof of address ownership or network validity.

How to use it

  1. Paste text, hex bytes or a Base58 string, or open a file, and choose Encode or Decode, the alphabet and Base58Check.
  2. Press Convert: the free preview shows the labels of the result’s rows, with every value masked.
  3. With a Pro pass, copy or download the result and the report. Editing the input or an option clears the old result.

Method and primary sources

The byte/checksum conventions follow Bitcoin Core’s reference and the Ripple address codec. Plain Base58 and IPFS CIDv0 multihashes are not the same as Base58Check addresses.

Limitations

  • A matching Base58Check checksum shows that the bytes are intact; it does not prove who owns an address or that the address is valid on a network.
  • There is no fixed size limit: a very large input depends on your device’s memory, and the tool says so when one is too large.
