About Woven Deck: Fortune Lane

Woven Deck: Fortune Lane is a solo card game set in a forgotten royal map archive at the top of a tower, where the kingdom's map sheets have lain untouched since the last royal surveyor climbed the stair. The sheets lie on the great map table in five stacks, two, five, two, five and two sheets deep, over a faded kingdom painted on the wood, and a woven wall map of the five provinces hangs above them.

The nearest sheet of each stack is open. Lay it on the drafting board when it is one rank above or below the sheet already there, with the Ace and the King meeting. Three pigeonholes keep a sheet aside, and the iron-bound map chest holds fourteen more to draw. Clearing a stack turns the worth of the four map signs, towers, ships, mountains and forests, one step round, and the ink pots on the table show it.

Every sheet you lay in a run adds to the open survey: 6 points, then 12, then 18, up to 48 a sheet. File the survey, always allowed, and its points are fixed in your score. But the tower is damp. The map sign holding the lowest value is the damp one, and its ink pot drips: draw a sheet of the damp sign from the chest with a survey open and the ink runs, and the open survey is lost. Clear a stack and the values turn, and the damp moves with them.

Every survey you file earns the pick of three instruments from a small case of eight, or a skip: a fine quill, dividers, oilcloth, a reading lens, a gilt border, a compass rose, pounce sand or a bound atlas. They hang on the rack for the rest of the lane, four at most, and stack, each changing how a survey is scored. A lane is five deals, one for each province: before each, two rule cards lie face up and you take one, and the points carry down the lane. Score only: nothing is staked. Every deal is checked by a solving player first, and the archive saves where you leave it, in this browser only.

How to play

  1. Before each deal of the lane, take one of the two rule cards. Then tap an open sheet, or drag it to the drafting board, when it is one rank above or below the sheet on it. The Ace and the King meet.
  2. Every sheet laid in a run adds to the open survey: 6 points, then 12, then 18, up to 48 a sheet. Press File (or B) to fix the open survey in your score.
  3. The map sign with the lowest value is damp. Drawing a sheet of it from the chest with a survey open blots the survey and its open points are lost. The Damp readout names the sign and the chance.
  4. Every survey filed earns the pick of three instruments, or a skip: tap a card or press 1 to 3, and 4 to skip. Up to four stay on the rack for the whole lane and change how surveys are scored.
  5. Keep a sheet aside in a pigeonhole. The chest holds fourteen sheets; every one left when the stacks are cleared adds to your score. Press H for a hint and U to undo.

Frequently asked questions

What is the survey?

The points of your current run that are not in your score yet. The first sheet of a run adds 6, the second 12, the third 18, up to 48 a sheet. File the survey to fix the points in your score.

Which sign is damp?

The map sign that holds the lowest value right now; its ink pot drips and the Damp readout names it. Clearing a stack turns the values one step round, so the damp moves to another sign.

When is a survey blotted?

Only when you draw a sheet from the chest with a survey open and the sheet is of the damp sign. The chance shown is counted from the sheets you can see, never from the chest's order.

How do the instruments work?

Each survey you file offers three instruments from a case of eight; take one or skip. They stay on the rack for every deal left in the lane, four at most, and stack.

Does it save my game?

Yes, in this browser only, open survey, rack and lane included. Your unfinished deal, best scores and badges are never uploaded.
