About Pixel Signal: Arcade Weather

Pixel Signal: Arcade Weather is a one-button timing game on a midnight city street, seen from above and drawn in pixel art. The wind has blown the passengers’ umbrellas off the roofs and they are drifting down the street towards the kerb, where three round stands wait: red, yellow and teal. Each umbrella belongs in the stand of its own colour. High above, an elevated tram runs to and fro along its rail all by itself, and it never stops.

You have one button, the tram’s bell. A ring sends a shock wave out from wherever the tram is, and it shoves every umbrella it reaches directly away from the tram: with the tram to its left an umbrella goes right and down, with the tram straight above it goes straight down. Nothing is aimed. The only thing you choose is the moment, because the tram’s place at that moment decides the push. Rings are gentle at long range and hard up close, so a good player nudges an umbrella twice, once to start it and once to finish it.

The weather changes every round. A crosswind carries umbrellas off sideways while an arrow shows the wind, rain makes them heavy and the bell dull, harbour fog hides them unless they are close to the tram’s headlights, and the storm gusts with lightning. Soaked brollies are heavy and paper parasols are flighty. Match five in a row and the tram turns gold for the Night Express, with a stronger bell and double pay. Lose five umbrellas to the street or the wind and the night is over; four rounds of six finish it. Tonight’s weather is the same for everyone, each night draws one rule such as a quiet street or a big bell, and your best night is kept as a ghost to chase. Assist marks on the kerb where each umbrella will land if you leave it alone.

How to play

  1. Press Space, Enter or the down arrow, click or tap anywhere, or press the on-screen button to ring the tram’s bell.
  2. A ring shoves nearby umbrellas straight away from the tram. The tram keeps moving, so where it is when you ring decides the direction.
  3. Each umbrella belongs in the stand of its own colour. A wrong stand pays a little; the street or the wind soaks it. Five soaked umbrellas end the night.
  4. Read the weather: wind pushes sideways, rain makes umbrellas heavy and the bell dull, fog hides them from afar.
  5. Match five in a row for the Night Express: a stronger bell and double pay. Four rounds of six finish the night.

Controls

  • Space, Enter, the down arrow, S, a click or tap anywhere, the pad’s A button, or the on-screen button — ring the bell

Frequently asked questions

How do I aim the push?

You do not. The tram moves by itself and the bell pushes umbrellas straight away from wherever the tram is. So when you ring is how you aim: with the tram left of an umbrella it goes right, with the tram above it goes straight down.

Which stand does an umbrella want?

The one of its own colour: red, yellow or teal, with one, two or three dots on the front. A wrong stand still pays a little, but breaks your streak. The street or a gust off the side of the map soaks the umbrella.

What do the different umbrellas do?

Plain umbrellas follow the push and the wind. Soaked brollies are heavy: they fall faster and the bell moves them less. Paper parasols are light: the bell and the wind throw them about.

What is the Night Express?

Match five umbrellas in a row and the tram turns gold for a few seconds. Its bell reaches further and pushes harder, and everything pays double.

Can I slow it down?

Yes. In Settings, Pace: Relaxed runs the whole game at three-quarter speed, and Assist marks on the kerb where each umbrella will land if you leave it alone.
